Some antidepressants can cause suicidal thoughts. If you suspect yours might have done this or made it worse please share which ones you are on.

They are only supposed to do that only in the short term. If the combo of meds you are taking makes it especially high risk you could be monitored in hospital for the first few weeks.

I'm not currently taking antidepressants. But I wanted to comment about my hx. I definitely was suicidal before starting. I had an attempt after starting one of them, more intense urges with nearly every one. Could have probably waited it out, but impulsive urges suck

Please do extensive research before making such a decision. Antidepressants gave me anhedonia and destroyed my sexual function.

I know antidepressants can really affect people negatively. I just read an article that talked about a type of brain damage from long term use of them.

I was put on antidepressants before I began puberty and have been on them since. It severely messed with my developing sexuality, mental and social development. 2/10 would not recommend.

I think I have survived in great part due to my medication. When I'm not taking any meds, I experience a shift in behavior and thought. Currently, my antidepressant keeps me numb, but that's what I need to be and I'm aware what it's doing. For me, they are probably a necessity.

In my case, personally speaking, I had tried most of the anti depressants in the market with no effect. When I went to my doctor last time I told him I didn't want anymore of anything, I was only taking Xanax and ambien to sleep. He then said give this one a try. I can't say I'm jumping for joy, it's been a month, but I have no side effects and feel slighish better. But ctb is still in my mind.

I take Prozac 60mg/day. I don't know if it helps but I don't think it's making me more suicidal.

I've tested on myself about 4 antidepressants. Now I take venlafaxine but it seems to make me feel only a little bit better. My disappontment that they simply don't work is one of the reasons I started to take opioids, which completely destroyed all leftovers of human being I used to have.
Sorry for the venting but I just had to.

I tried many antidepressant in many psych ward. I'd say the worse of them is efexor [EDIT : which is venlafaxine which @grungeCat is talking just before]. Abilify ruined my life though it's not an antidepressant.

Yeah you did what I did, I replaced anti depressants with opioid which created a bigger mess. Now I'm taking viorxetine 10mg, was the best anti depressant I took, no side effects no weight gain. Before that I was on Zoloft, cymbalta, Prozac, venaflaxine. All those made fat dissociated and suicidal. But each person reacts differently. Just mentioning what best worked for me.

I would add that no antidepressant really helpled me. Lithium did though, but it's a highly addictive medication. It's the only one I'm grateful to have and don't regret to have accepted to take. Beware : lot of side effects. Still I'm definitely better with it (and I know it's not an antidepressant either ^^)

Lexapro (escitalopram) had the worst effect on me. Within two weeks of it I was having suicidal thoughts, and that was long before my life situation got super shitty.

I had pretty good results with Zoloft (sertraline) for a few years, but eventually it wasn't enough. I'm now on Cymbalta (duloxetine). I think it's helping, but I can't really be sure. I haven't attempted in 3 months despite thinking about it every day, so perhaps that's something?

Cymbalta gave me the worst withdrawal symptoms when I stopped you can't even imagine. So one day if you stop don't do it like me. Do taper first.

I'm no longer on them but I had been on them for a grand total of 7 years with a two year gap in between. I can say that I had more suicidal ideation on them than off. They had given me sexual side-effects and also sapped my motivation and slowed me down both mentally and physically. Even after the positive effect wore off due to tolerance, the side-effects were still present so it was kind of like having the worst of both worlds. Also quitting them is a fucking bitch! My anxiety and depression were also worse after getting off of them than before I had even taken them. Sure, other factors may have compounded that but I've also heard other cases where people reported the same.

You've heard that SSRI's were supposed to take time to be effecive? Well, after quitting them at 17 and having an event happen to me at 18 which destroyed my life, I tried to stay off of them. I made it to 20 (almost 21) before I caved and saw another shrink again who prescribed me a different SSRI. BAM! First dose and it was highly effective. The psychologist that I had seen last year said that that is your body being already familiar with the mechanism of SSRI's from previous use. So a permanent change then, in other words?

There are many things that if I could time-travel, I'd want to fix in my past. If I could only choose one thing, I would choose never to seek professional help aside from maybe counseling. I had decided that I would CTB instead of going back on them again.

I know it's not the same thing at all, but what I've realised recently is how much alcohol effects my moods. While not drinking I felt pretty good, in fact over last few days have felt better than I have in a long while.

Had some beers yesterday, and today I feel really low and like I don't want to be here again.

I think alcohol seriously messes up my brain, I need to abstain permanently I think.

They put me on them for ppd. They helped for a bit, but I realized it was time to stop taking them when i Was impulsively suicidal while on them. Even weaning off slowly sucks, and when you get off them everyone freaks out even if the meds don't help.

Rispridone. I started to go crazy. The thoughts got worse then need for death became more. But I wouldn't listen to me too much. I'm sensitive to antipshychotics so I'm more likely to have serious side effects compared to others

I was put on Zoloft (sertraline) as a teen and it did absolutely nothing for my suicidal thoughts (I was suicidal before taking it). I was forced to keep taking them and them and finally decided to get off years later as an adult. I now have permanent anhedonia and worse mental state. I wish drs actually bothered to tell people the real and TRUE side effects but they never will...these meds are given out like candy and they have the power to further destroy people's lives.

Risperidone is rough. Antipsychotics in general are brutal, but risperidone seems especially bad. I'm glad you're no longer on it and hope it didn't have any lasting effects.

Wouldn't allow it. The second anything "freaky" goes on with medication it's gone before it has a chance lol

Holy shit man!! What were you on, if not a secret? Just to know what to avoid!

From What I hear about antidepressants it's actually better to heal yourself with alcohol/illegal drugs than with this shit

At least all the illegal stuff gives you pleasure too....

No. I realize they do not work for me. They do not solve the cause of my depression, so the symptoms are always there.
