Yea I've noticed, I'm surprised no one has posted a goodbye in this thread yet. Not that I've seen anyways. They have in the Kitchen Sink thread more then once.
Yeah I think a lot of times, when in other threads, it's more of a not wanting others to know, just a select few.

I've thought the same thing.

And it has the advantage of being buried so quick, that no one will 'remember' them.

Said as it's the exact reason I was going to do th ings like that.

Your perspective of it is interesting, I'm glad you shared it. I viewed it as not wanting the attention of the entire forum, but a more intimate group with whom they'd developed closer relationships, such as the kitchen sink forum.

There are so many possible reasons why someone may do something, and conversations like this help me realize each day how limited my own understanding is. I'm often an insightful person, and yet I also don't know shit about shit. :pfff:

I'd never even thought about a goodbye thread, I realised earlier that if it wasn't for the lock down, I wouldn't be here now, I would have gone to the higher bridge and been done with this shit, but a goodbye thread, it wasn't even in my thoughts, given how some of us are here, would it be respectful to do one? But then I'm barely noticed, so would any one notice, Are goodbye threads and posts solely for those who are posting them as a clarification to themselves rather then seeking approval of their choices via others?

I've thought a lot about this during the months since I joined. I think it's different for everyone. I don't need the support of a goodbye thread, but people do notice, people do wonder, and it leaves an empty space when someone goes without knowing what happened, much like not leaving a suicide note irl, or being ghosted. It's discomfiting for some when a member suddenly leaves a vacuum, perhaps traumatic for others. But such is the nature of this environment, and it is yet another choice others have to respect even if they don't understand it.

I think some folks do a goodbye thread because they need support, they may want to be talked out of it, they may need to feel cared about, they may need to feel not alone. Heck, there are some folks who claim to have lurked and join just to post a goodbye thread. I won't even get into those with motives to troll except to say that this is an anonymous forum on the internet, shit like that happens. Because of the anonymity, I don't think it's possible to boil much down with any real certainty, and that's challenging to deal with just because survival relies on some levels of predictability, certainty and stasis.

This place is so...primordial? Such a soup of varying needs and goals. Psychologically fascinating, emotionally uplifting, emotionally draining, balancing and unbalancing.

When I tried in October, I had posted on this forum the day before, then 2 days later posted my experience, but barely got any replies, at the time of my try, posting here was the last thing on my mind, despite the fact this forum has played a huge part in keeping me here in the last year.
I guess though, everyone is different, I have often wondered those who post the vague goodbye threads, is it really a secret cry for help, is it someone who isn't 100% comfortable and is seeking reassurance.
You can (I think!) tell the genuine ones, those who will not persuaded otherwise, and I have the upmost respect for them.

You are right this forum is that way, everyone is unique, yet the same, its a strange place to be, but one I am so glad I found

They should put this in the forum description:

"This place is so...primordial? Such a soup of varying needs and goals. Psychologically fascinating, emotionally uplifting, emotionally draining, balancing and unbalancing."

@GoodPersonEffed

Well said.

Someone just posted smth about serotonine and how 90% if it is in the stomach. Are you suggesting we treat our problems with chocolate instead of ssri, @Underscore , or is it just a coincidence?

Coz I'm down for it!

You're describing how I used to function back in college. I used to consume ~7 bars of chocolate a week, coupled with ~10 packets of cookies. It did help me cope, but it wasn't exactly... healthy.

Wow!

That feeling when you accidentaly rotate your mobile and you see people's signature quotes!

It's a whole world of treasures and mysteries that suddenly come to light.

Anyone had that experience?

I never noticed they weren't visible in portrait. Maybe because I mostly use SS on my laptop, so I can see the signatures most of the time.

I've been meaning to ask that as well.
Can you guys imagine how cool it is to be named H. P. Lovecraft? Or maybe it's a pseudonym.

Couple of days ago. @Iloveyouall made me do it. Said my potato looked Lovecraftian. I recoloured him to make him more potato coloured but it's not easy turning a cuddly Great Old One into a potato. Maybe I need to do more work on him.

Maybe make the wings look like potato skins? Slightly brownish, darker than the rest, making it look like he hatched out of the potato?
