The deceased was a 49 year old man who collapsed at home, having taken a quantity of sodium
nitrite, and died shortly afterwards in Darlington Memorial Hospital on the 8th February 2020. He
had been deeply affected by the death of his son and more recently by the death of friends, all by
suicide. He had a history of attempts to harm himself often triggered by alcohol. He was getting
support from mental health services. Twelve days before he died, he purchased sodium nitrite (a
meat preservative) without difficulty on Ebay, having researched its use on a "suicide forum". Post￾mortem showed methaemoglobinaemia and toxicology showed an alcohol level of 178mg/100ml
and nitrite in the urine

Oh ffs, looks like I'm gonna have to order soon because of this retarded countries restrictions on anything, though with covid it's probably banned already anyway. It's also nearly impossible to even get medicine from a doctor now for simple infections let alone getting estrogen which will prevent osteoporosis.
What the fuck does it mean prevent future deaths? SN is just to make it peaceful so we don't suffocate and die horribly at the end of a rope or die in agony cutting in a bath. Razor blades, rope are still available to be bought. The people will still die. Gromit this month was doing everything he could, day after day and making himself sicker until his SN got there.
Fuck this country and it's failing health service. I'll go abroad if SN becomes illegal here.

Don't think sn is that peaceful
I've poisoned myself with SN before. If you stay calm it's definitely peaceful. The pain level does depend on the person, as I've heard of some people suffering. But personally I had no pain at all after taking some paracetamol prior. The worst part is just your heart beating out of your chest if you don't take propranolol.

This is exactly why I'm planning to do it again, this time with more preparation.

On what basis?
It takes a lot of reading of all the previous reports on people who have taken SN to get a full picture of what happens when people take it. There are some variation in reactions.

If you feel like reading about it click on the spoiler in the first post in this thread:

Thanks for sharing your experience. Why did your attempt fail?

I got found. Simple as that.
Not to hijack the thread, but I made a thread about it if you'd like to read.

I read it, thanks. Glad you recovered with no permanent damage.

Bad stomach so can't have alcohol, SN would burn too, let alone both sadly.

Explains why it's so hard to get in the UK now (and why shipments get seized at customs)
Sorry for being dumb but how does that explain why it's hard to get? I'm sure I saw it available with a quick search but maybe it was for import

From older posts (before I joined) it seemed it was easy to get SN from the auction site or the crafting site - which is why it was recommended as a cheap alternative to N. Now there's barely 1-2 sellers that ship to the UK on the crafting site, and a few people on here (myself included), that have failed to get their SN delivered to the UK (tracking either shows it was held up at customs or non-tracked shipments never arrive). Some have been lucky and got theirs but.... your mileage may vary.

If there's been a sudden increase (during 2020) in the number of suicides using SN, it wouldn't take much for UK customs to red-flag small-but-regular SN shipments coming into the country, and wait for contact from the buyer. After all, if you're genuinely using SN as a food preservative, you'd be buying in bulk and have no issues contacting customs and asking where your shipment is.

EDIT: There are companies within the UK that sell it (like APC Pure), but you have to contact them before ordering, because they don't sell SN to the general public

I love reading these coroner's reports - I find them very interesting.

Oh crap, there goes my option number 2 soon. Reading this stuff makes me nervous. They REALLY don't want people killing themselves. I really ought to buy some asap even if it might be a bit of a shitty way to go. This could lead to temptation before my time. RIP JT, hope you didn't suffer too much

This is a heartbreaking story. I just hope he's at peace now and that this was truly the route he wanted to take, seeing as he ended up dying in the hospital..

Not to be insensitive or anything but how do we know that the person in the report was in fact a member of this forum? Sorry if I'm missing something....

I suppose we don't know for sure (unless we do and I'm missing something - this happened before my time) that he was a member of SS.
But, from what I understand we are the only suicide forum of our kind, or at the least the most prevalent. He may have been an active member here, or he may have not been a member but used us for the research.. I'd be quite confident that the "suicide forum" mentioned in the coroner's report is us - particularly seeing as the coroner has sent their report to government also.
It's heartbreakingly sad to read.
