Doing it in a storage unit is a bad idea. It puts everyone there at risk.
Regarding the helium method, it doesn't have to be helium. It can be nitrogen, argon or any other inert gas.
The problem with helium is that the formerly popular party balloon tank now often contains a mixture of air and helium, which makes it unsuitable.
Pure helium itself isn't harder to get than any other suitable gas, though.
Here someone uses argon, because they found a very cheap regulator with integrated flow meter:

Be aware, though, they initially did it wrong by using an oxygen mask. You HAVE to use an exit bag.
It's a very good method, I'm going to use nitrogen myself.
