Between 2012 and 2016, the National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Safety in Mental Health collected data on the types of opiates or opioids that were involved in death by selfpoisoning in people in England who had been in contact with mental health services in the previous 12 months. The most common was heroin or morphine (40%, 113 people), followed by codeine (19%, 53 people), tramadol (17%, 48 people) and methadone (11%, 31 people).
