It's Kind of A Funny Story. It's also a book. The author killed himself and never saw his book become a movie. He left his wife and young son behind I believe. After I finished the book I was gutted after I found that out but look where I am πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ It's about two kids in a psych ward and actually a positive movie. I also really like the song featured called "Oh My God" by Ida Maria

Wow never knew that. Yeah the film was really optimistic in the end.

<Cloud Atlas>, based on a novel by David Mitchell.
"I believe there is another world waiting for us. A better world. And I'll be waiting for you there." is my all time favorite quote.

Then also <The hours>.

And anyone enjoy Javert's Suicide in <Les miserables>?
"I am reaching but I fall
And the stars are black and cold
As I stare into the void
Of a world that cannot hold" - that feeling is very relatable.

Good thread.

For me it's probably The Elephant Man but there are so many great suicide movies.

I plan on watching 'Night Mother and Corporate sometime soon.

Goodnight Punpun! It's a manga series but everything in it is completely fucked, and every character is fucked in the head. The emotion and expressive illustrations fit the storyline incredibly. I don't even know if I can reread it... I feel that it's a manga you read once and it just stays with you for the rest of your life. Even if you don't read manga, I heavily recommend it to people who are looking for something relatable and want to consume extremely disturbing content.

Since even manga and anime is being mentioned here, I am surprised nobody mentioned this one yet: "I sold my life for ten thousand yen per year." or "Three Days of Happiness"
It's not related to suicide directly, but it is kinda about despair and hopelessness. Really easy to read and it's not even that long.

Possible both have been been mentioned and I missed it, but two recommendations from opposite ends of the cinematic spectrum:
The Hitcher (1986) is, among many things, a very unconventional film about suicide. The film's main antagonist, who goes by the alias John Ryder, desperately wishes to die but is either unable or unwilling to do so by his own hand, choosing instead to find his final release by pushing an innocent soul to the breaking point, thus passing on his sickness and ensuring a manner of life after death. Seemingly indestructible horror villains are a dime a dozen, but it's rarified air for them to have this much baggage.
On a very different note, pitch black tragicomedy On the Count of Three (2022) (the directorial debut of standup comic Jerrod Carmichael) is not only possibly the single greatest film on the topic I've ever seen, but one of my favorite films of the last decade, period. Poignant, empathetic, and life affirming without being too heavy handed, patronizing, or sappy; it's a precarious balance that many films would fumble, but this one sticks the landing imo. Bonus points for masterful use of a certain early aughts nu metal radio staple...if you know, you know.

Honorable mentions: Smile (possibly the single most relentlessly grim and depressing take on the subject I've seen) and Sonatine (1993) because that movie just slaps.

"I'm thinking of ending things" - i didn't like the movie, but the dialogue was spot on at times.

"Downfall" or when "I won't go down alone" is pushed to the farthest.

This extremely beautiful, dreamy Thai movie about a suicidal librarian who moves into the rural home of a teenage girl who just lost her sister in a freak accident. Highly recommended if you find it:

Wristcutters: A Love Story (2006) was great but I can't find it anywhere these days. Too controversial a topic?
