As you know, censorship around the world has been ramping up at an alarming pace. The UK and OFCOM has singled out this community and have been focusing its censorship efforts here. It takes a good amount of resources to maintain the infrastructure for our community and to resist this censorship. We would appreciate any and all donations.
This is an old thread, but I would still like to give an answer.
The very big difference between calling a helpline and venting on SS is the fact that you may not want to be helped - I don't. And a helpline is designed to help. They wouldn't get it. This forum, filled with like-minded individuals, would.
I wonder if there's a helpline operated by people who have/have had suicidal ideations. I believe that if they wanted, they could undergo a bit of training and become very good.

The Samaritans is a charity helpline in the UK and some of their volunteers have been saved from suicide by the helpline. It is a good helpline, not least because their philosophy is that within certain conditions, it is your choice whether you want to ctb. Sometimes you get a volunteer who just cares and says the standard placating things but I've more often spoken to people who definitely understand.
Well the main difference for me is that with this website I don't have to subject people to my awful voice so that's a point against helplines. Yeah I know there are text ones but then this place still has an advantage over that since you're more likely to actually connect with people with similar experiences to you and not just someone being paid to be a fake shoulder to cry on.
I also do very poorly in conversation, and will get quickly flustered and shut down ("talk" therapy doesn't work well for me for the same reason) or people talking to me will get the upper hand and then I'll feel like a low life. But that's just me, others might find the conversation method a better way to work through it.
i'm sure many others have said, we can find likeminded individuals here in a free way that doesn't immediately judge or criticize (there are exceptions to this like everywhere online) but generally you're accepted here.
and no danger of cops, getting sectioned, wards etc.
Suicide hotlines in my country provide conditional help with the sole purpose being to dissuade you from commencing the act. For that reason, it puts pressure on both parties, and will feel more akin to a pseudo hostage negotiation than a genuine empathetic gesture.
On here there's much less of a chance when you reach out of receiving pro-life rhetoric in return, and a better chance of receiving true empathy and understanding.
