i tend to binge true crime when i'm feeling at my worst, and when i binge true crime content, it makes me tend to feel worse. a sort of symbiotic cycle of sorts.

i was wondering, does anyone else do this? why do you do this?
i have a lot of ideas of different personal reasons for doing this but im very curious to know if this is just something i do for my own reasons, or if this is something that other people experience this as well (and your reasons why?).

i very much appreciate any input on this topic!!

I do this as well, but I find comfort in it. I also favor very tragic true crime and not everyone does. I end up watching it most often when I lose interest in other things. This is what often keeps my interest and it'll be most of what I watch until I get my normal interests back.

Beyond basic entertainment it's kind of like having a reminder that no matter how painful or uncomfortable I fear my ctb may be, at least I can know what to expect and prepare for it unlike the true crime victims.

I have other personal reasons for watching this style of content, but that's what I can share with you.

I watch gore sometimes, and sometimes last year it used to make me appreciate life a bit. But that effect is starting to wane as well. It's getting boring.

I was the type to be on shock websites for years (rip original bestgore), watch a lot of true crime, and even have a graduate degree in forensic psych. Part of me is slightly desensitized to it, but it's something I'm very fascinated by. I wouldn't say it influences my desire to cbt, but it does bring a sense of morbid comfort.

Aaahh... Rotten dot com, Ogrish, BestGore - that's my stuff right there. I've actually been finding a lot of comfort in WatchPeopleDie dot TV. It's unironically helpful! They have a whole section there for confirmed suicides and I've been watching them to prepare myself for my own. It's been very reassuring watching haphazardly thrown together hangings go off without a hitch. Like - if they can do it, I can do it.

That I consider more educational viewing than entertainment. For entertainment - True Crime nowadays either has me feeling bored or jealous. Bored because I'm desensitized to it all (I mean where do you go from stories like Junko Furuta or Albert Fish?), and unpleasantly jealous because I'm just plain jealous of people who are dead. Bizarrely enough - ever since Youtube allowed Police Bodycam videos to be posted, I've been binging the hell out of them. I can't even explain why I enjoy them. They're just...pure human suffering, but the people in them are suffering on MY level, and I don't have to be jealous of them dying at the end. And they remind me of all the reasons I want to leave this world. They're pure audiovisual junk food and I scarf it down. Because I'm an awful being made of pure Negative Energy, and I enjoy absorbing specific flavors of Negative Energy, and Police Bodycam videos just do it for me.

I was honestly disappointed when bestgore went on sale and with the monstrosity it has now become. It was so much more entertaining when it was practically the dark web without actually being on the dark web. The only thing I can't watch suicide-wise is firearms for personal reasons, everything else is fair game. It's the same way that I like going through the goodbye threads for SN cbt's, so I can get a more confident idea of what will go down for me when I choose to do it.

As for true crime, I'm extremely interested in it. Hell, I have an entire degree relating to it. BUT! I feel like a lot of the stuff they pump out now isn't what it used to be. Anymore, I would say has become more censored or "mainstream." I want something that's really out there, like we used to get. At the same time, maybe we just need some more innovative serial killers nowadays. That might fix the issue!

Grew up loving true crime. Not as much anymore. I think at a certain point it becomes a fetish though. Think 'Informative Murder Porn' from South Park. Seems like a weird way to turn other people's suffering into your entertainment. Not looking for censorship or anything. Maybe just a shift in priorities. Its like the same reason the History Channel is only about Sharks and Hitler. All about sensationalism disguised as "learning."

I like true crime, it's a nice source of entertainment. But it also makes me feel more suicidal. If my life could be ended at any moment by anyone, wouldn't it be better to kill myself before they have the chance? It would guarantee me a more peaceful death, and one of my own volition.

I do this too. I'm not entirely sure why. It doesn't seem all that healthy to be fascinated by awful things. I guess in some ways, I'm looking for confirmation on how f*cked up this world is.

I also find industrial disasters morbidly fascinating- like Chernobyl, Bhopal and the Boeing Max. I suppose it makes me feel justified in how outraged I feel at these corporate bastard companies and people who run them who must be utterly callous. Plus, it reminds me why I don't want to re-join this world. I'm able to live a secluded life at the moment, working from home.

Maybe it's some weird way of reassuring myself that my decisions in life actually weren't so bad. You see how many abusive, violent relationships there are and think- maybe being single's not so bad afterall! I suppose it's still a minority but to be one in the minority has to suck.

I binge watch true crime, too. I do it to at least feel something because naturally, I am depersonalised 24/7.
I do it to kill time, too. I should take action and suicide. I don t know what I m waiting for. While I wait, I watch true crime.

I used to watch it a lot until I realized I was becoming desensitized. It was a disturbing realization to me that hearing about people being horrifically hurt, tortured, and killed wasn't as appalling as it used to be. I don't want to lose my empathy towards those sorts of things. They did not die for my entertainment. They did not die so I could listen to them on the drive to work the same way I'd listen to the radio. That isn't fair to those people. Not to mention all of the ethical concerns that have come out with major news stations and youtube channels exploiting people's death with inaccurate information and without the family's approval. I watch if ever now and then but I'm careful to only source it from places I know are in contact with victims families. These people didn't chose to die, their lives were horrifically taken, and I don't want to let myself become desensitized to that.

It s great you kept your empathy. Having grown up with two narcissists as parents, this has always been my highest goal, to be empathetic. I failed miserably.

I watch a tonne of true crime but try to avoid anything with torture, long-term confinement, serial killers (which I find pretty boring) and anything with kids. Although JonBenet Ramsey case is possibly my favourite. Has no effect on my mood other than absorbing me and distracting me.

I love true crime. It doesn't make me more suicidal. That's more likely to happen with the happily-ever-after romance rubbish. So I don't watch those.
I mainly watch true crime, crime, and police series. NCIS, Law & Order, Will Trent, and others.
