Hello, everyone. As usual, I am super grateful to everyone who is offering advice, resources, or just their genuine support. You're my biggest source of moral support now, guys, thank you so much, you all are incredibly kind!
However, please, please, even if you're upset which is understandable, unless someone is super agressive and/or trolling let's try not to attack each other and fight over this. On behalf of all people of Ukraine (maybe thats cocky but okay), let me send love to all of you and gratitude to all supporters. I will answer the questions in the next post or by editing a little later.

I promised one person an update if I actually see something right out of my window and I did see some kind of aircraft exploding and falling from the sky relatively close a few moments ago. I also hear something that sounds suspiciously like gunfire and it has never been so close yet. Very very scary. Even for someone ready to part with their life, very scary. I hope none of you ever know how scary it is. I also hear someone crying hysterically in the apartment next to me through the paper thin walls...This is so unfair...So many people did absolutely nothing to deserve this.
I love you. Stay strong and survive! I know this advice is sort of antithetical to the purpose of this site, but, fuck it: I am rooting for you. I feel like I 'm viewing a thread from the movie Resident Evil and I always root for the underdog. SURVIVE!!!!!

I am not sure what you mean...frankly, I am mostly thinking about much more down to earth stuff at the moment.

Today started fairly scary, but the things are really looking up now. It's quiet, no fighting anywhere close to me. I was able to find an ATM where I was able to withdraw a part of my salary that dropped on one of my cards yesterday, I was able to find a place to buy bottled water - a smaller bottle for the smaller bag and the bigger for the bigger bag, bought the wet wipes and other non-grocery necessities. Such simple things that I took for granted only a few days ago, and yet now they feel like I completed a massive quest. The absolute best news is that I was able to get in touch with my friends that, as I suspected could be drafted - they are not at the frontline, but in the local territorial defence, and they were able to let me know that there was indeed some gunfire at the edges of the city, and I indeed seen a Russian military drone being shot down, but right now there is no active warfare in city or anywhere close, and they are just unloading ammo, weapons and various necessities that are being delivered in the city. Another good friend made it out of the city (barely missing active warfare!) and is now on a train headed for the border with Poland. I am helping at work by covering for all the people that can't work for various reasons and considering going to a blood drive to donate blood tomorrow in the morning, and my family found people that might get them out of the city tomorrow (although that is still up in the air for now). So this was a rather good day. Hope you're having a good day too.

Nessie I'm from Poland Here you have link to officiall Poland government site with reception points adresses and procedure. If you somehow reach one of them you will be saved from war if you meet requrements. Poland has some flaws but it is very friendly country in the end. Our goverment is very open to Ukraine people at these days. I hope you are save. Send you all my love and support Hans https://www.gov.pl/web/mswia-en/information-for-refugees-from-ukraine

I am not claiming to be an eyewitness of all fighting at all locations, but I can report on what is going on where I live. I didn't see any weapons deployed next to any populated areas here. And frankly, there have been enough civilan casualties by now to make it clear that even if our army was doing this, it is not an effective tactic since Russian military has no issues with attacking populated areas... A terrible thing to thing about, frankly.
If you somehow reach one of them you will be saved from war if you meet requrements.
Do you know anything about what these requirements are? The only official resources I found are in Polish and I'm not sure I will understand everything correctly by translating it with Google Translate...

I hope the weapons and supplies that are sent by other countries will arrive in time to make a difference in Ukraine, but the real strength lies in its people bravely fighting back against a power hungry madman.

There can be no victory for Putin as long as people don't accept defeat and keep resisting.

This seems like really good news.
  • Russian forces are becoming increasingly frustrated by what the US believes is "viable" and very determined Ukrainian resistance, a United States defence official says.
  • The UK's defence ministry says the Russian advance into Ukraine had temporarily slowed, probably because of logistical problems and strong resistance.
  • Germany will send 400 rocket-propelled grenades, 1000 anti-tank weapons and 500 Stinger surface-to-air missiles to support Ukraine

Thank you for suppport everyone! @Hans Voralberg thank you sooo much for providing this information!

I've read about the stuff you packed in case you need to run, but do you have any ideas on where to run to?
Not really. Short-term I know where the nearest bomb shelter is and might be going there, and I'm thinking about some despressing scenarios such as the building being on fire and just needing to run out. The stuff I'm packing for long-term is mostly for a case when the government starts official evacuation, although I haven't completely dismissed the option to try to leave the country and be a refugee in one of the neighbouring countries.
It's so surreal. Only a few days ago I had a conversation with my roommate about whether it would be better to go to Poland, Hungary or Romania...for a vacation as tourists when the COVID restrictions end...

Holy shit, I was convinced we were nuked this morning. A huge explosion in a distance - and then I looked out of the window and saw an honest-to-god mushroom cloud raising up. In about 15 minutes got a message in a Telegram group - nope, not a nuke, that's a natural gas pipe that was blown up, the mushroom cloud is what it looks like. There are toxic fumes in the air though, non lethal but damaging to the lungs sadly, so we were instructed to shut all doors and windows tight and stay indoors until tomorrow unless getting out would be absolutely necessary...

@Moomin17

I'm not sure it would be sensible for foreign civilians to actively engage in a war overseas.

The whole conflict itself is extremely confusing, more than half of the Russian soldiers probably opposed the invasion and extremely confused.

The fact Russians suffering heavier casualty is contributed by the fact those guys are sent in as cannon fodders.

"Russian troops stormed toward Ukraine's capital, and street fighting broke out as Kyiv city officials urged residents to take shelter. The clashes followed two days of fighting that resulted in hundreds of casualties and pummeled bridges, schools and apartment buildings.

Russian forces have entered Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city. The head of the Kharkiv regional administration said that Ukrainian forces were fighting Russian troops in the city and asked civilians not to leave their homes."

Hey. I admire your resolve, I want to clarify something. Ukraine is calling for foreign volunteer soldiers with military experience. I don't know much about your background, is it the case? If you do make it to our recruitment center, I'm not sure whether you're going to be turned down if you are not from the military - the situation is dire enough for them to accept you as long as you claim you know how to fight without doing any background checks. But I would strongly advise you against going here if you do not have any military experience. If not for your own sake, then for the same reason I'm sitting this one out in my apartment instead of enlisting - to put in harshly but bluntly, at the frontline a person that doesn't know what they're doing and isn't ready for war can really do more harm then help. I've learned about this from actual veterans that participated in this conflict back when it was localised in the Luhansk and Donetsk - they had several stories of young and naive guys enlisting and then basically dooming their entire squad because they didn't get enough training or panicked when faced with real combat. Horrible stories, I'd tell you. You're already a hero because you really want to help. If you really want to help Ukraine with something practical, I can suggest other ways. But do not do this, do not enlist without knowing what war is like and what to do here. Situation is chaotic, you will probably have no chance to be properly prepared here.
PLEASE REPLY AND LET ME KNOW YOU READ AND CONSIDERED THIS.

You're correct, of course. Perhaps I provided encouragement without thinking much. He wanted us to wish him luck and I did.

As Nessie mentioned, there are other complications like the question of him having previous military experience and having the ability reach a reception point.

Anyway, I wish him luck in whatever course he decides to take or as the circumstances decide for him.

To be accepted - yes. But, let be reasonable - have you ever faced combat? Have you ever experienced shelling? Have you ever shot a real human being? Or had someone shooting at you? Are you sure you'll know what to do if your commander is suddenly killed or you're separated from your squad for whatever reason? Are you 100% sure you're not going to freak out when you're surronded by fire, bombs gunshots and dead and wounded people and will remain calm and collected enough to make right decisions instead of doing somethign silly and dooming large quantities of people on your side?
Please, please, please consider this. It will help absolutely no one if you'll just come here to die a horrible death or get maimed. It will just give us another person to worry about on top of our people, you might become that one guy the rest of the squad has to rush to save all the time. I don't want to be harsh and dismissive of your good intentions but I feel like I have to because if I sugarcoat this I might not get through to you.
You do understand what I'm saying, right?

Thank you too. I really hope you do think this through.
I have another strong argument for you. You see, our president calling for foreign volunteers isn't really a tactical thing and it isn't really a call for you. In terms of human numbers we're ridiculously outmatched, Russia has 4 times our population, no amount of foreign volunteers can balance that. It's a morale thing, he's not really talking to you, he's talking to you so we can hear it. Many people here expected that if war does start and the whole world can see that Russia started it basically unprovoked and is hurting civilians than some sort of UN peacekeeping mission like the ones we saw in all those horrible wars in other countries, or some other similar military organisation, will show up on our doorstep and start saving us. And it didn't happen. And many people feel betrayed. Or maybe not quite betrayed but...I think most people on this site know this feeling fairly well. When you're in a really major crisis and there are a lot of people telling you they care and they're there for you, which is definitely very nice and better than being ignored, dismissed, invalidated or blamed for your own problems...but they aren't really doing anything that helps. And you're grateful and you can understand why they can't really help you...but it still really sucks. So the call isn't really for the foreigners. It's for our people, to give them hope and a feeling that something actually helpful can be done, that help is coming...even though frankly it's an empty hope, but leader has to support morale by any means possible and our president is trying so hard, I'd never think he has it in him, bless his soul.
Oh my god the news

THE FUCKING NEWS

No point for volunteers here anymore. You can't fight a nuclear bomb.
I will CTB, but what about all the other people living here? Children? Animals, after all?

Unprovoked? Are you serious?? Entire world put Russia under hell of sanctions, suppressing them and cutting them from most of the world and they are not done yet. It will take Russia many years, maybe decades to crawl out of the shithole it is now in while US and NATO drink their champagne. Is this what Putin wished for?
