I had to think about this. One probably has to differentiate between the aspirations of being ethical when it comes to this and the objective fact.

I had to think about this in the context of my friends. I am a doomscroller, I read up to 30 articles a day, I also read yellow press outlets and I also use chatGPT for feedback. When it comes to political reporting not as primary source.

My friends hate AI. They have leftwing passions. They are very much against Israel and in favor of Palestine. I am too. But they go way more frequently than me to demonstrations, they write speeches and for me it seems like they see an intrinsic value sacrificing their time for a good cause.

I am more oriented trying to see the full picture. Weighing pro and con arguments. Maybe I read too much corporate narratives and fall for them. My friends instead they pick a few topics (especially Israel-Palestine) where they research the history of the conflict. And they think most of the things that get reported in my region are completely bogus. And the pro and con arguments with emphasis on nuance were bullshit. I tend to believe there is some truth in that. In Germany the media has a strong pro-Israel consensus. And I think even the chatbots when you talk to them in German have more pro-Israel stances. This has something to do with the fact that for example OpenAI has a contract with Springer. A huge German media corporation that is very biased in favor of Israel. It forces employees to see sign statements in favor of Israel.

I have the feeling my approach to truth might be biased. For example more rumination doesn't necessarily lead to more insights that are worth considering. And honestly maybe my process of of thinking had to change instead of accumulation of a sea of information that is hard to navigate in. I am not sure whether I am too outcome oriented. I started to read the German journal Merkur with very long essays. ChatGPT suggested this journal to me. The articles are often extremely long, thoughtful, impregnable. (Some essays are taken from the London book review to give you a better picture. But I prefer some different types of essays which are also published there). You know you can read 10 news articles and personally I feel smarter and more informed afterwards. Whereas essays in Merkur induce a feeling of ambivalence and maybe in also confronts me the feeling that there is something I have not fully grasped yet. And that the clear answers in life are often treacherous and there is much more ambivalence when it comes to truth. One crtiticism I also read Merkur articles with a very strong Israeli agenda and bias. And chatGPT will criticize me for writing that. I often ask for AI feedback on my texts.

You know having this passion, fighting for something, seeing a higher cause bigger than you. Informing yourself and being personally involved in one topic. Maybe that's a better approach than trying to be a smart-ass on many different topics at the same time while not actually being able to dive deep.

I know on many issues more information than my friends, I am faster informed on breaking news, I know more media figures and I can give you a classification where they stand. How popular they are, their weakpoints and my personal opinion on their integrity. My friends know that for many figures in Israeli politics though in contrast to me.

Maybe I envy them. They have a cause to fight for. I feel detached from my environment because I trained on my survival because this is what I have to do to keep stable. I don't feel bad about other people when I am doomscrollling. I feel comforted that I am not the only one with a horrible life and I see others have it worse. But I lack intrinsic value to sacrifice my own well being for others. I am not sure why mentioning it now. But I looked at pictures of self-immolation today. Not videos I think videos are even more horrible. Maybe it is far-fetched to make this connection. But maybe I wanted to feel a connection to myself. I quit watching gore a long time ago. But the see self-immolation is a very political suicide and a form of protest. The pictures where not as nightmarish as how I imagined them. There was a media coverage about a case of self-immolation and they described that pictures of the dead body were uploaded and people made fun of the trans person who died. I was always scared how a dead body after self-immolation looked like. Maybe I am too numb I only saw pictures of people in the process of immolation and weirdly I didn't perceived them as that traumatizing. In my mind I imagined them to be more brutal. ChatGPT will also criticze me for this anecdote not connected to the thread. I think people choose self-immolation as protest against their suffering. An idea I would highly advice against. I am a very political person but no I would never try self-immolation. But I think people choose self-immolation to bring change. In most cases nothing happens except an extremely excruciating death for a person that already suffered way too much. I can remember one friend of that trans person wrote the pain of the self-immolation probably wasn't that bad for her. She went through much worse in her life. But I am not exactly sure. The case was 5 years ago and reading it made me a trans ally. So I guess my media consumption has some merit. I have the feeling many people who are in the process of being on fire probably regret it while at the same time they know if they are saved this pain will be probably more excruciating. There is a reason why bullies try to pressure their victims into this form of suicide.

Maybe to make a connection to the thread. I am not sure whether all forms of media consumption are moral. Did these people consent to being shown in the process of dying on the internet forever?

I think I seek for certainty and I like to decrease ambiguity on many issues. My relation to mind reading/theory of mind and political analysis might be different though. I like to have a strong opinion and to share them. Maybe all of this is the wrong approach. I admire people who dedicate their life to the seek of truth and who only speak on topics where they are an expert in. I think the epidemic of fake experts is bad for our society and it helps the populists in the longrun. And I am part of these loudmouths. I just like to read a good 10-15 minutes article maybe from different newspapers on one issue where they elaborate on different perspectives. But I think actually I had to spend time in statistics, moderators, mediators, context variables. I try to snatch the big holy grail of wisedom without doing any proper homework. And that's shallow. But that's me. And I don't really have the resources to change that. I always have the same problems but I just throw the same patterns of behavior at them and expect things to change. And then I look back at myself of two years ago and consider me a naive idiot while practically not much has changed.

I think I will end it here. I

Edit: I think I didn't spell it out.

But I guess it is obvious I consider the use of AI chatbots as sort of unethical. I wonder whether my progress in introspection and education with the help of chatbots is deceiving or not. Not only mentioning the hallucinations. I also use it for improving my media consumption like looking for lectures I have not watched yet. I think on self-reflection it analyzed pretty interesting stuff by offering them so much data. There was really insightful stuff. And I have the feeling I understand myself better since I did this. But it can also become a rabbit hole that is toxic for my mental health. It can give me the feeling of learning more about myself while it keeps me in a loop of rumination. Not only thinking harder and more should be the goal but changing my habits and implementing a better and more healthy version of myself. Not sure whether I am able to do that though considering my resources and circumstances.

Bump I put some effort in this thread. I had a lot of new thread ideas today. But honestly I could write a couple essays. It would be so much text. And actually I would prefer more reading today. I am kind of exhausted.

It's admirable that you read so many articles just to get an accurate view of things that are going on in the world from multiple viewpoints, instead of just reading a few and thinking you know everything and then fighting for a cause that you might not be fully knowledgeable about, As far as Israel and Palestine go, I honestly think both sides are guilty of war crimes and I support neither side. Perhaps it's a bad thing that I just don't care about their conflicts as much as most people do, but I'm of the opinion that both sides are trash. I also have this same opinion about the overwhelming majority of humans in general unfortunately, but I'm not a complete misanthrope, just very close.

I understand why someone might also choose self immolation as a form of protest because I've considered doing it myself. Don't know that I ever will though because it sounds far too painful, so I probably won't ever try that. Maybe I just haven't been pushed to that point yet. Makes me sick to know that the trans person you mentioned who did this was made fun of by people. That's just another reason why I hate most people right there. I fully support trans rights because at the end of the day, the gender we were born with was totally random, and people should be able to say to themselves and others that "This isn't me" if they aren't happy about it and should be able to change it for their own wellbeing.

Anyway I wanted you to know that I did read your post here and it was a good read for me, even though you mentioned some sad things happening in the world. I don't think there is anything unethical about using AI if it helps you gain access to more info and be able to express yourself more clearly than you might otherwise be able to.
