The hymen can tear from methods such as deep masturbation or by riding horses for long enough or things that stimulate that sort of region enough to where tears can and do happen.
A woman's virginity is apart of patriarchal control. Meanwhile a male who is a virgin is stigmatized for not being a "man" because they were not sexually active when legally permitted to. These are rather archaic social notions that demoralize both genders. Social implications vary a bit but the effects still hurt people.
