Unintentional exposure to nitrite- or nitrate-containing toxic salts is a recognized cause of acquired methemoglobinemia (MetHb). This systemic alteration of the blood can be fatal if not recognized and treated promptly. The intentional ingestion of sodium nitrite (NaNO2) or sodium nitrate (NaNO3), causing MetHb, is an uncommon and recently identified method of suicide, with the first reported case in the literature occurring in New Zealand in 2010. In this case series we present 28 cases of sudden death of individuals with evidence of MetHb and/or toxic salt ingestion, occurring in the Province of Ontario, Canada, between the years 1980 and 2020, inclusive. Of the 28 deaths in our case series, 25 showed evidence of intentional ingestion of sodium nitrite or sodium nitrate salts. Our year-over-year data demonstrated this is an increasingly used method of suicide in our provincial population, with the majority of cases occurring in the final two years of our study.
Postmortem detection of MetHb is typically established via screening techniques such as scene evidence suggesting fatal consumption of a toxic salt in addition to the characteristic grey-purple lividity observed upon the body. The diagnosis can be established via postmortem blood testing demonstrating elevated methemoglobin saturation. Additionally, we have confirmed that postmortem MRI in cases of MetHb demonstrates a T1-bright (hyperintense) signal of the blood; both within intracardiac blood on chest MRIs and postmortem blood samples in tubes.

Just another media fad. It's widely used in the food industry so controlling them is next to impossible. Are they going to attack rope and barbecue sellers too?

Pretty sure Asian countries changed barbecue stuff to be less lethal once they realized that people were offing themselves.

As for SN, I think it's ridiculous to assume that nothing will change in its availability once enough people have killed themselves with it. Maybe not in America since the government doesn't give a shit about anything so I'm personally not worried but in other counties I can imagine that high purity SN gets banned unless you're an established food or science business or school. In Aus, you already can't purchase more than 40% pure, iirc.

The only viable way I could think of sn getting 'restricted' would be the fact that they start producing stuff that's less than say '90%'
They'd add preservatives or something. Like they already do with the 'curing salt' which has a low %of sn.
Scientists are smart yano lol

My point is that it's pointless to even try. The body is fragile and there are countless ways to die. The only reason we seek these new fads is because we don't have the guts to just get it done. A new method allows for escapism for a little while, nothing more. Unless they knock down every tall building, remove all ropes from the world and seize all hand guns, sucide is not going anywhere.

This isn't true. Once you take away easy methods of dying, Suicide rates go down. UK changed acetaminophen bottles to blister packs and the suicide attempts from that went down. I saw on SS that they also changed the type of gas in homes in the 70s which reduced rates also.

Most people who attempt or commit suicide aren't chronically suicidal, it was something they decided relatively quickly and it's transient enough that take away easy methods, they likely won't seek other methods.

People on SS are probably outliers for the fact that most of us are long term chronic suicidal people which means that we take the time to research methods extensively. But from a public health perspective, outliers are irrelevant for the most part.
