Warning: Take the content of this thread with a grain of salt. It can be interesting to speculate.

Here is an anecdote: I did prompt engineering to get a psychoanalysis of different thought of schools by the AI chatbot that has the most data about me. And it had some interesting takes about me. I am very introspective and think a lot about me. And I had some thoughts of these theories already. I also asked about input that might contradict my own self-image. And there was a very interesting theory. I am obsessed by intelligence and I hate me for that.

Here is the reply that made me think. I don't think the reply is fully true. I think it is partly false. Though, it is probably true that when I think of intelligence it is actually not about intelligence per se. And there is something deeper behind that.

Counter-hypothesis 1: It is not primarily about intelligence, but about credibility[/H2]

You often ask about intelligence, education, and depth. The obvious interpretation would be: "You want to think of yourself as especially smart."

That falls short.

A stronger counter-hypothesis is:

In your case, the intelligence question stands in for the question of whether, despite psychological crises and social insecurity, you are allowed to count as a credible subject.

Then your wish for recognition would be less vanity than protection against devaluation.

My comment: replace credible subject with respectable, desired, complex subject. A subject that deserves love and attention despite its flaws. I assume my mind is that way because my mom beated me up when I was studying for school as a kid and teenager.

After this anecdote: What would be my bold takes about psychology and psychoanalysis?

My thesis: I think the people who gawk and lurk on this forum after they read a news article that demonizes this forum partly envy us.

My reasoning: Most people experience social media as toxic. The toxic positivity. The social norms on SaSu are quite different to the rest of the internet. You are allowed to show vulnerability, that you are hurt. that you are broken, you don't have to pretend to be strong and you are allowed to express very stigmatized topics and thoughts. They would not want to trade shoes but I could imagine there are lurkers that enjoy the vibe of this forum even though their personal situation is quite comfortable. I could even think about a (mass) poster in a similar position. He disappeared though. Usually in life and on the internet the better you present yourself, the more you are admired. The rules on SaSu are quite different. The people on here are far more genuine. Then there are probably people bored of their life. They feel empty, don't see a meaning in their life, might not even be suicidal but the content on here resonates with them. This forum can also be like an asylum, an escape of one's own misery, a distraction. On the other hand, one can think I could trade all my problems against one decision and this would be to cease to exist. One thing to emphasize. I don't think people actually become suicidal when they only lurk on here or gawk at our posts. Usually this won't happen passively for no reason. But it could function as a valve in one's life, as a temporary thought experiment that relativizes one's own problems or as a projection of one's own suppressed stigmatized thoughts. They cannot integrate the part of themselves that hates life, that considers this option as valid, project their hatred on us while actually envying that we can integrate this part in our life without resenting ourselves for it.

Honestly, this is quite speculative. And could be a lot of bullshit. It would probably only apply to a small minority.

I also doubt that merely visiting the forum would turn a 'normal' person suicidal. Although- I would concede that it is certainly a negative eco chamber and some people do feel sucked downwards by that.

I would still however argue though- that a lot of people recognise that fact and make a decision that either- that's what they want. That's what resonates with them. Or, they take steps to 'protect' themselves. They spend more time in 'Off Topic' or 'Recovery', they take a break from the forum or, they decide to leave all together. This place is very far from being a cult that entraps its members!

My argument would be that- even (debatably) mentally ill people are often still aware of how their environment affects them.

As for a speculative statement about psychology/ psychoanalysis- from the (very) little I read, Freud seemed like a pervert to me. I remember a quote from him- something about children sucking their thumbs as being infantile sexuality. That sounds paedophillic to me. I'd agree that it simulates the comfort of breast feeding for the child but- that isn't sexual- as far as I see it. How could it be for female, straight babies anyway?

Maybe it was that his more sexual theories were controvercial, so gained the most attention but, I think he projected his own experiences onto others too much. I don't think I've ever experienced penis envy as a woman. Especially strange- seeing as I was and still an quite a tom boy.

But, supposedly knowing so much about the mind- I don't see how it didn't occur to him a lot of what he believed could in fact be projection. So- unique to his mind and experiences and definitely not the same for all.

There again, maybe it is for me too. Just because I think it's weird to believe even children are hugely sexual from the start- that may only be my own experience or rather- non experience- thankfully.
