Discussion Is it safe to take codeine before a wisdom tooth extraction?

I'll be getting my four wisdom teeth removed next month by an oral surgeon. The dentist said I should take some painkillers beforehand (though I don't think they mean opioid based ones but anyway). I was thinking of taking 300mg of codeine, 30mg of zolpidem tartate (ambien), and 25mg of promethazine hcl.

Is there a risk of me suffering respiratory depression with this combo? I just wanna enjoy myself during surgery.

Keep in mind that I'll also be given IV midazolam as sedation. They say that benzos and opiates are a bad mix.

Benzos and opiates can cause respiratory depression, though I don't think 300mg of codeine is much (unless you have little to no tolerance). But think your mix is a little too much, I'd leave out zolpidem and prometazine out of it.

I can't. I don't want to because when I tell him what I plan to take, he'll think I'm a drug addict.

You mean prescribing painkillers? Yea...that's unfortunately not going to happen. I live in Ireland and doctors are so hesitant to give anything that might be perceived as addictive.

I live Australia. Before my wisdom tooth removal the dentist injected an anaesthetic into my gums to make the procedure more bearable.

Midazolam administered via IV is like a memory eraser.

You won't remember whether you enjoyed the surgery or not, so it seems like an unnecessary risk to take.
