then why does (most) everyone, especially the religious folk, do so much to not die? One would think that they'd be wanting to get [to Heaven] as fast as they could. They get cancer and go through excruciatingly painful treatments in order to make their stay longer on this planet. Same thing with heart ailments. With any ailment, really. Any health condition that pops up that could lead to death, left untreated, they take any treatment option offered in order to extend their lives. Just seems to me if it were so great up there that someone who believed in it would want to get there as fast as possible.

Personally, I think it's just words they tell themselves so they can stay motivated to live this foolish life. "Something good is waiting for me if I just put in my 80 years on earth first!"

But when it comes time for them to put their money where their mouth is, they're kicking and screaming, doing everything possible to avoid dying.

Actions always speak louder than words.

I noticed this as a kid growing up in a religious community. People would take comfort that their loved ones were in heaven ("They're in a better place, etc."), but when it came to them personally they seemed terrified of dying and wanted to live at all costs, even with greatly reduced quality of life.

I believe as much as they profess to be believe in a Creator, Jesus, Muhammad, what have you, and in an afterlife, they still have that lingering doubt in the back of their minds that they can't extinguish. You know, the better the devil you know syndrome, for lack of a better description.

The sad reality is that many people, who believe in an afterlife, do precious little to deserve the heavenly afterlife they crave for (assuming for a moment it would be really existing).

You find so many religious people who are pretending their inhuman, misogynistic, homophobic and racist attitudes are in the name of their - supposedly - loving god.

Well, if they truly believe in afterlife, all I say is: good luck, hell is waiting for you. A loving god will see through whatever you pretend, will notice your sins, and is going to punish you for them.

Now, let me also say: there is no heaven and hell, no gods and no afterlife. The state after death is the same state we "experienced" before birth: nothingless. With our bodies returning to nature, where we ultimately all came from. In death, we're no better or worse than any other living species on this planet. How reassuring.

I believe this also. The only sad part about this for me is that I won't get to ever again see people who have passed that meant so much to me.

if heaven exists, if i kill a hardworking christian who has just asked forgiveness for they sins then i have done a good deed right? I just sent someone to a much better place, not only that, I prevented them from any possibility of falling into temptation and ending up in hell.
If heaven exists, infanticide should not be seen as a tragedy, because kids are all guaranteed in heaven, as they are innocent and free from any sins.
If heaven exists, Christians should all be suicidal for the OP's reasons.

People will not go to heaven right away after death. There is nothing after death unless u are born again. When Jesus returns, u will be raised from the dead and that's when u will be reunited with family or people who are also saved or born again. Nobody knows when this event will take place but I have a feeling it isn't far off.

Where exactly does this "U" reside that will be raised upon Jesus' second coming? Oh yeah, that's the limbo place, right? Surely, not in the rotting corpses in the ground or within the ashes in an urn. And, so, if your mother, or father, or wife, or children, aren't born again, but you are, you won't ever get to see them again? Sounds like a pretty sadistic system to me, to be honest. I'm not knocking your religion or what you believe. You can believe anything you want as far as I'm concerned, unless it causes some type of harm to someone else. Lets both try and not let this thread devolve into a religious / non-religious war of words.

I understand why u might feel this way. It's a lot to explain. Children are saved through a parent who was a Christian if they are not old enuf to consent. I'm not exactly sure how it will look when pple are raised from the dead. Our body will be different from the flesh body that we have here. It's going to be like u can walk thru walls, appear and dissappear at will. Anyway I didn't mean to offend u or upset u. Sorry about that.

Do you think we can submit a waiver for exemption or do we have to participate? I've always skipped family and high school reunions. If Jesus knew my heart, he'd know that I don't want this.

I'm joking around now, but I'd be downright mortified if this were real. Having to convince a whole other set of people in the afterlife that I didn't ask to be there and wanted to leave... Again?!

Dude... I would lose it LMAO

When we are raised from the dead, it won't be anything like what we experience here. Some people won't be dead when they get raised up if they are alive in the flesh body when Jesus comes to gather the believers. All the suffering, bad memories, people being jerks, will not be a thing. U will have memory of your loved ones but perhaps no memory of all the bad stuff. It won't be awkward or anything. Don't worry about that lol! It is supposed to be amazing, better than anything u can possibly imagine.

I think even religious people have doubts. Death is always going to be a gamble for people who aren't absolutely sure of their beliefs/ non beliefs.

I also had some really interesting PM's with a Catholic lady who said that failing to get treatment for a disease is also sometimes seen as a kind of passive suicide. I may have interpreted that wrong- but that was my impression. Seems kind of cruel to me seeing as the disease surely came from God as well (unless it came from the devil.) Still- if God seems adament we fight off all adversity to live- then- why not? Seems characteristically sadistic enough to fit in with the rest of it.

Plus, I don't know how simple it actually is to refuse treatment and die naturally of a disease. Will doctors still prescribe pain medication if you refuse other treatment? I'd hope so but I truly don't know.

I think some people hang on even when in pain for their families too and any tiny bits left of life that they still enjoy.

That all said- I don't think there's any way I'd stand putting up with constant pain. Life's hard enough already without thay on top.

Religious mania and hypocrisy always! Gotta love that piousness and holiness.

Most people believe in heaven on an intellectual level, and they have not internalized this belief on an emotional level. That's why they are still afraid of dying.
