I sometimes see news of people who are experienced swimmers accidentally drowning in a river or the sea. This is a good example of a recent news story.
I was just wondering, if I try to swim as well for a long time in the sea when it's a bit rough, would that be effective as a suicide method? It could be a good way to mask a suicide as an accident, but I'm not sure what the chances of succeeding are. I imagine Survival Instinct will kick in. What do you think?

Sounds painful as my body will hit the water. If I'm in the sea and it's rough, the waves will just push me about and prevent me from getting out and breathing. I know drowning is painful for a few minutes, but as long as the survival instinct doesn't keep me swimming and alive, I should be able to achieve unconsciousness and then die quite quickly. And because I'm constantly struggling to swim, the time will pass quickly too. I am a bit afraid of pain, so I don't want to do something like jumping. But swimming peacefully, then some waves come and I can't breathe. Doesn't sound that bad.

But sharks
Sharks don't generally attack people in the UK, so would be safe to swim I think. My main concern is survival instinct and being spotted and saved before I can drown. But if I pick a time late at night, might be safe. I'm a pretty good swimming though, so not sure if I can manage to drown, even if the sea is very rough.

I never learned how to swim so i could easily jump in the river but it looks so disgusting. It makes me sick just imagining touching the water.

Tons of people drown every year, most in very shallow water. You can frown in a bathtub. Going down deep or weighing yourself down so you sink too deep to make it to the surface for air, once survival instinct kicks in, will work. Once you take a gulp of water its all over. This is something I've thought about too. The effect on the body differs in salt water vs fresh water. Depending on the person you may or may not have a trachea spasm which is what happens when your body closes off your lungs to the water trying to keep you from drowning but ultimately suffocating you anyways. It last for only seconds once water enters your lungs but I imagine the brain is still conscious for 6 mins afterwards.

The temp of the water determines how long it will take for you to actually die and whether you can be revived. You will sink once your lungs fill with water so if nobody sees you, you'll likely stay down for hours or days until gasses bring up your body, in the ocean your body will likely be eaten by fish though.

Lake Tahoe has bodies of drowned persons still there years later because the water is so frigid they do not decompose and gasses never form to bring the body to the surface.

I think I will use this if I don't get N. I tried it in a bathtub to hold my breath, but survival instinct was too strong. I hope a stormy sea will be enough to overcome it.

I tried this, but my survival instinct got the better of me straight away. The water wasn't rough, but is a disgusting brown colour, which makes it difficult for me to submerge my face in it or swallow it. Goodness knows why - it wasn't as though I would have cared if I was ill! Anyway, I was wearing trainers, as the route to the sea was very rocky. I don't think this helped, as I didn't manage to swim very far. I had read several stories of people drowning doing the same thing and imagines that it would be easier than I found it.

I hear sea water is worse because of the salt. All I have for fresh water here has alligators and I'm not about to become a chew toy 🤪

I've never been more sure I was going to die than one time when I got caught in a current and pulled out to sea on the pacific coast of costa rica. it wasn't at a point in my life when i wanted to ctb. and if my then partner (who was a much more experienced swimmer) hadn't been there to talk me through it, i think i would've disappeared into the ocean that evening, to drown after becoming completely exhausted. fwiw, it was pretty terrifying at the time.

I envy those who intentionally drown. My fear of open large bodies of water prevent me from doing it this way but not do I envy them.
