A big chunk of my suicidal feelings comes from the abuse and manipulation I experienced extensively throughout my childhood at the hands of two selfish evil mothers and a crew of enablers who ignored it. I won't even get into it, but I had a very traumatic childhood and I'm still dealing with PTSD and a myriad of other issues.

I'm fairly anti-psychiatry after trying to seek help for many years from the mental health industry, I was not helped through medication, and the therapy I received (for 13 years) was largely unhelpful and out of touch. Everyone throws you down that pipeline to "get you help" but that community is just as clueless as the rest of society.

Do any of you have any *real* advice in terms of healing from severe abuse? Any therapy methods that actually work and help? Anything that could help with my intrusive thoughts and self harm?

Thanks!

It's a tough one, everyone has their journey. I found ketamine to be helpful honestly. And I got lucky with finding the right kind of help from the right kind of professionals. Ketamine and Sertraline.

As for what worked for me, it was more of a philosophical approach over the years. Understanding myself and the impact experiences had on me and my behaviors both inwardly and outwardly. Trying to Understand the human animal, the behaviors of people and why, etc. Kind of a stoic and empathetic approach to everything instead of internal conflict. Lots of reading and internal reflection. It wasn't easy, but it worked for me in combination with meds and talking to the right people in the therapy feild.

The helpful thing in the pipeline is MDMA assisted psychotherapy. It's very skilled and you can't do it without highly skilled therapists. They do have a treatment manual online here - https://maps.org/wp-content/uploads...hotherapy-Treatment-Manual-V8.1-22AUG2017.pdf

I have never met a therapist with that level of skill - but I guess they find them. I don't know what country you are in - they are trialling it but not in the UK. It is at Stage 3 trials, which shows it has helped in the first two stages.

Here are some graphs from the Daily Mail:

Also there is this website in case it's helpful and they have a phone number too (it's UK) https://napac.org.uk/survivor-toolkit/

So you suggest meds prescribed by psychiatrist and therapy at the same time?

There are lots of therapies that can potentially help. At the very least, try to find a therapist that's experienced in treating complex trauma, having someone who listens to what happened to me & validates that it caused lasting trauma has helped on its own. It took me a very long time to be able to actually acknowledge I had trauma and even longer to talk about what happened. I did a little bit of EMDR a few years ago, didn't get very far because my therapist quit, but for some it helps quite a bit. Considered doing IFS before realizing I have a dissociative disorder and my parts are real.

Ketamine has been the most helpful drug for complex PTSD for me. it's not easy, sometimes it brings back memories and makes me feel worse temporarily, but I can often see my memories at a distance and reprocess them. Most other psychiatric medications have harmed me. Once I figured out how to use it well (low doses, always with at least one of CBD/CBG/CBN), cannabis has been helpful at short term symptom relief.

Based on my own experience I would recommend it, but though ketamine and Sertraline worked for me, they may not work for everyone. But if you haven't tried them, it's definitely worth a shot. Talk therapy too, very important to understand yourself and the impact it had on you and come to terms with it etc. Just like any other profession, you need to shop around to find the right therapist.

I have never been to a psychiatrist but I am planning to start another therapy.
I have a fear that the psychiatrist would not understand me and give wrong meds. By what you have said I have assumed that your psychiatrist helped you and has given you the right meds.

Yeah... It took me many years for me to receive the correct diagnosis (PTSD), I was misdiagnosed as bipolar for a while and kept getting treated with drugs that were harming me.

As you age and see people's mothers getting sick and their devastation maybe you'll feel relieved like I do that I will never have to feel that way.

Got your suffering done early.
