I mean you could ask me quite the opposite question. Why do I consider medication as useful but drugs as too dangerous?
I would be interested to dive deep into this topic. But it is already quite late.

I give one argumentation that I don't get. It is about weed or magic mushrooms. They would be natural in contrast to the chemistry of the medication. I find this argument shortsighted. I mean for example fly agaric are also natural. There are so many natural things that can damage humans very much and cause insane pain. Then I don't get this framing that chemistry in contrast to nature would be that bad. I mean if your dentist treats yout teeth I think only insane people would say no I don't want to have any pain killers chemistry pills are too damaging.
Moreover many drugs are produced through chemical processes. For example meth, MMDA, cocaine etc. Then there are even medication which can be abused as drugs. Benzos like xanax, lorazepam etc. Sometimes it is hard to differentiate.

I mean I have read you can even misuse certain antidepressants or antipsychotics to get high. But for me here comes the distinction. It is the way how we use these substances. I don't deny some drugs can have therapeutical effect.s But I have the feeling many people don't care about safe use and don't have much knowledge about it. Psilocybin can have postive effects on people with PTSD or depression I think. Weed can help people who suffer from pain as far as I know. Though I think it is important to do this together with a doctor. Or at least following very strict rules.

I had psychosis. And most people in the clinic did not care about empirical evidences etc. They said antipsychotics were bad because they were evil chemistry and drugs instead were good. There is clear evidence that people who had psychosis get psychotic again when cosuming psychoactive drugs. But most of them did not care. Many said weed was natural it could not hurt them. But is very obvious that weed is contraindicated for people who had psychosis.

There is also clear evidence that longterm usage of cocaine makes you depressive. Here is an article about it.

And people still take it without thinking much about the consequences. It ruined the lives of a lot of rich people.

I should now elaborate on the dangers of medication to give a fair picture. But I think the vast majority of comments will do this for me. This thread is quite an unpopular opinion in this forum. It is quite late and I should get some sleep now.

Some dangers I think about medication are addictions. Like when benzos are taken too often. Opiods which completely ruined the lives of so many people in the US. It is heartbreaking to see that. So many people became homeless because of the greed of the pharma lobby. When you read about the opioid epidemic in the US you understand why people don't trust the pharma lobby. Then there are a lot of side effects some longlasting. But personally I consider most prescribed pills as way less dangerous than most illegal psychoactive substances. Here are people also people in this forum who said medication has ruined their life. And I completely believe them. But I think when speaking about statistics longterm use of cocaine, or MDMA for example is insanely dangerous. Smoking weed as teenagers can have devastating consequences. There are a lot of studies about that. Statistically I think tested medication is less dangerous if it is taken the right way.

Interested to read your criticism. I expect a lot of negative feedback. But it is completely okay we can agree to disagree.

It all comes to use vs abuse
whether drug or medication.

I really hate when people talk bad about weed.
Do not dare compare it with other synthetic drugs. Please šŸ™. And i am middle aged so that you know.

There are plenty of negative health consequences from smoking marijuana, just as there are from cigarettes and alcohol, heroin, and coke. All are natural, that does not mean they're safe or risk-free.

ive some mental illness and shit and i resort only to beta blockers when getting parasympathetic cramps and drinking beer when sleepless. i don't take psychotropic meds but took them a lot in the past to realize that there's no significant differences except in sleep regime and theyre the same poison to me as illicit drugs and i used some occasionally include opiates and there isnt any problems, you still can get permanent brain damage on psychotropic meds(tardive dyskinesia, messed receptors) and they do have long term harmful action on endocrine like elevated levels of prolactin(weight gain, gynecomastia, mood changes etc) besides meds didn't tested for safety in children yet shrinks readily hook em on the meds w/out any side thoughts. and on every report that they work there's a lot saying the opposite. and in general line between medication and drug is very narrow:
moreover meds should be second class treatment. shrinks never consider treatments on endogenic level w/out mind altering substances. avitaminosis/poor digestion/bad nutrition/endocrine/harmful habits not related to substance abuse(internet/porn addiction) are opted out they shovel meds and therapy down the throat and expect back reaction which sometimes happen if placebo effect outweigh side effects of medication

Anti-depressant medication specifically SSRIs don't cure depression. Worse than this, not only do they not cure depression but they mute your emotions totally, however these are still heavily prescribed. Why, you may ask are anti-depressant drugs that don't cure depression so heavily prescribed? The answer is that they give you enough of a level of functionality to go to work. You will drive home depressed. You will wake up depressed, and you will go to your meaningless soulles job depressed, all the while on anti-depressants albeit your depression, as well as all your emotions dull, muted, the volume turned down.

Personally, I would rather feel all the pain I feel. All the suffering I have experienced, and truly I would rather be dead than to live the life I just posted about above. People might see that scenario as a win, you got your shit together. Congratulations. You made it, you are doing better, you have a job and an appartment. Hooray for you. Truly I would rather be fucking dead. And railing lines of speed, taking shots and smoking cigs doesnt turn you into a permenant dull muted zombie strolling through life halfway conscious but still miserable. So to me, this kind of medication is far more dangerous than the types of drugs I self medicate with.

It's not a secret that I served time in the big house. Drugs were my life. But so many of the people who came to me were bonkers and barely had any rational thoughts. They were all professionals too. Nurses, teachers, professors, web developers, executives... Not a scrap of common sense among the lot.
Makes you paranoid that it's something to do with you.

I took an antidepressant for a couple months, they told me the ringing in the ears was a temporary side effect, but it was permanent- a nasty thing to do to a 19 year who just wanted someone to talk to. Antidepressants often cause much more damage faster than any street drugs.
