Song of Durin. My favorite song, about a once-ascendant people mourning everything they lost. The song ends on a hopeful note, but that makes especially sad because unbeknownst to them, that hope is hollow. They eventually do reclaim their land and heritage, but it's not the new beginning they hoped. Their decline is inevitable and in the end they all die out. The arc of their civilization closely mirrors the arc of my own life. The world was young, the mountains green
