What of my pets?

So as I sit here contemplating the possibility of death, one of my big concerns is what will happen to my beloved pets. Most likely, once my body is discovered (which could be several weeks) any pets in the house will be carted off to a shelter somewhere. I am the only person they have ever known and their stress and suffering will be great. The question that I pose to myself is would it be truly sinister to end their lives first in order to prevent them from suffering? It doesn't seem fair to them but I'm not sure. I also don't know if I could do it. What I know for sure is that if that takes place, my death is absolutely imminent since I can't live without them and the guilt will kill me anyway. What do you think?

I have the same issue. One of my pets has failing health but the other two would end up in a shelter or with a rescue.

Don't end your pets lives. They love you but are also very adaptable. They of course will miss you but they can go on.

I wouldn't do that at all. I've worked with animals for a couple of years now and I agree that pets are adaptable. Yes, being in a new environment is stressful for them, but they can grow to feel comfortable with new owners and a new home. It just takes time.

I know of an elderly cat that was dropped off at a shelter because the owners didn't want it anymore. It was adopted pretty quickly and it's adjusting well.

Killing your pets is not the way to go, they don't deserve it. If you're not comfortable with a shelter, then I'd personally look for a new home and vet people on your own.

It's your responsibility to provide for your pets before you make any decisions about ending your life. Your pets depend on you. Drop them off at a shelter or find homes for them, or keep living for them.

It's understandable to worry for your pets. The best you can and should do is make arrangements for them once you're gone. If you're worried about reasons you can tell people you're just being super precautionary or say you have a health problem. Find homes ready to take them and then when/if you decide to ctb send a timed email to the relevant organisation to collect them and have them given to those specific homes in waiting. If you want to you could do it before you ctb so you don't worry it will be carried out correctly. Expect a real painful experience but take solace in the fact it's the right thing for them. A clean conscience (though it can come at a cost) is invaluable.

I'm actually sticking around for my cat. I can't leave her (our specific history makes that especially hard to justify) and let someone else who wouldn't know how to care for her beyond the basics. So for now I'm around whilst she is. And in some ways it makes beeing around easier even though there's a lot of health based suffering involved. I'd fee l immense guilt and fearful sorrow for the life and things she'd struggling with (even with good owners) if I were to die on her. I took her on. I'll see it through. It's just right.

I've decided not to kill myself until my dog passes away, thankfully my Frankie is on the older side now so it shouldn't be much longer than a few years.

My dog is a stumbling block for me. I don't have any children and my genetic relations are mostly distant. My gf is planning to ctb with or without me. My thought is that I won't just give my little angel away. I can't stand the finality of that at this time. I've got a couple of friends who said they could watch him for me whenever I go somewhere that he would be ok with but he always goes with me right now. I've asked them what they would do if something happened to me and was told they would keep him. I do have a guy that I work for off and on who's daughter likes my dog and I asked him if I needed to find him a good home would she take him and he said definitely but right now that would mean saying goodbye and I can't handle that. I guess I'm saying look around you at potential future owners you trust is all. I think I have that but it's just not time

I'm having the same worry. But I'm worried that I may just be overwhelmed having her around. What if I get better and I want her back?

By killing your pets, I assume you mean euthanasia? I have two cats that I'll be leaving behind to my family so I know they'll be taken care of I honestly don't trust alot of shelters but please do extensive research if you'll be giving them away to a family directly, make sure their great people. Or the shelter route where you do extensive research and make sure it's not a kill shelter. On both make sure they will receive lots of love and caring and they are adaptive just like humans, yeah they'll be sad and you will always be in their hearts but when they get a new family with love they'll be fine. And you'll be waiting for them in heaven.

It's going to be sad to leave them behind but their life span is short compared to the life expectancy of like 80 years, so it really doesn't matter too much in the end.
