I'm not sure why people are so sceptical that a "couple sips" wouldn't be enough to do the job. It's a poison and effect people at different rates.

Also, the guides calls for 7-10 times the legal dose. It's entirely possible there was at least 2 grams in the sips he took.

Pulse oxymetry is unreliable in cases of methemoglobinemia. The 83 percent is simply because O2 sat readings are inaccurate.

In the link below, a paramedic discusses methemoglobinemia (the condition that drinking SN causes). If chemistry is not your thing, start watching at 1:40-ish.
This is what the ambulance crew will be dealing with. SN is not mentioned because other things cause methemoglobinemia as well.

Should be looking for pure SN , no additives ! Energy has minute additives and is only sold in 2 lb bags .
Seek elsewhere for peace of mind !

The "additives" are anti-caking agents.

Didn't realize the effects of sodium nitrate were as strong as they were. I dissolved 2 table spoons of SN into 1.5 cups of water (roughly a large glass) Had only 2 sips before pouring the rest out. I felt fine but every time I burped, it burned my nostrils. Next thing I know I'm in the ER with a breathing and feeding tube. Apparently my roommate wanted to ask me something and he found me passed out with a blue/gray face on the couch in my room. The doctors claimed that if I wasn't found, I probably would have died. Oxygen level was at 83% when the EMT did a reading.

I wasn't trying to kill myself although I didn't really care if I did. I thought that I might become drowsy or pass out for a little while since i was experimenting with only 2 tablespoons.

Just a warning I guess that you should probably make sure you want to kill yourself before experimenting with SN.
Feel free to ask any questions, although I'm not on here much, so it might be a little while.

I'll be honest no, but perhaps I should have. Usually when it's an old thread, I just read the more OP, then the more recent replies, especially if it has multiple pages
