When people are grieving, it's common to speculate if you had performed xyz action, that your loved one wouldn't have passed away in the end. Searching for blame, or justice, is a means of coping for many who have lost people they love due to accidents- overdoses, car crashes, etc- and suicide.
We all know banning suicide methods won't bring the deceased back, but often times people think taking these actions will bring them closure, accompanied by the belief that they righted the wrongs leading to the death of someone they cherished.
When one of my parents died early in my childhood, my relatives ferverently went looking for blame in a futile attempt to quell their grief and anger.
Even then, I knew that banning alcohol completely, or invisioning a fantastical paradigm where not a single intoxicated driver could access a roadway, was not going to bring my father back from the grave. When someone is gone, they're gone for good. They aren't coming back. Substance bans won't change that.
Many studies they cite, making bold claims like restricting access to methods decreases the number of completed suicides, don't follow up the participants in the long term. We can't quantify whether or not an alcoholic who drank himself to death at age 50 had his suicide successfully prevented, because at the end of the day, many people will make self destructive decisions leading to an early death in the wake of restricted access to suicide methods.
The NYT continues to profit from bereaving families' grief by exploiting their stories for sensationalised clicks. You can tell by the saccharine, pristine countenance displayed by that reporter while she shamelessly plugs the link to purchase her autobiography, a heroic tale where she rakes in millions as a lawyer defending against heinous cybercrimes.
If preventing suicide were this team's modus operandi, they wouldn't have jumped on the bandwagon when a convenient opportunity for their law firm presented itself. They are well aware that this method is incredibly obscure, but exaggerating the impact and scope of this matter garners more attention for their newspaper.
