The Last Resort is Switzerland's newest human rights/assisted suicide organisation. As the home of the 3D-printed Sarco Capsule, The Last Resort offers a drug-free means of an elective, peaceful & dignified death. The use of the Sarco is free* to approved users. A good death is a fundamental human right.

Website here

Potentially very big development.

I looked into it - they only accept applications from those over 50 that satisfy the criteria under Swiss assisted suicide laws. Younger people who are seriously physically ill MAY BE accepted… ffs. I would pay €10k donation if they would let me die there.

That's right. Sarco is from EXIT so that was always likely.

Yes disappointing. I liked the idea of flying somewhere one last time. Anyways back to either hanging or N for me whichever I secure first. Thinking this with a noose in the forest is most likely. Just not looking forward to the final moments setting it up alone in a forest at night. Will be a mental struggle but it's doable.

I don't see why someone who is moderately handy just couldn't make their own similar device. Those giant plastic tanks that are used in agriculture come to mind. They may not be clear offering a "view", but I see no reason they wouldn't work. A little rigging with a N2 tank and you have basically the same thing.

It will be an interesting development. It suggests that if you're over 50 the criteria is less (or not at all) than for the other associations in Switzerland, because no doctor is involved in getting a prescription. If you are under 50 and they require some sort of documentation of suffering, that's where it gets into a gray area that's not fully explained. A doctor still is not needed for prescription, so why do they need additional criteria met? I think it's just to avoid bad publicity, but that's just me. (Because Swiss law only requires you to be over 18). There still is the requirement to meet the "mental capacity" standard, so some sort of psychological screening will always be necessary. As for cost, there will still be substantial sums to be paid (I believe) but this wasn't addressed, because a lot of the 10,000 Swiss francs is administrative and legal requirements. Unless The LastResort is going to cover all those too. (But after spending $700,000 already on this project I doubt they have those reserves). Also buried in the news conference is the fact that the device has a person size limit of 5 ft 8" which seems a little "short"-sighted. 🤷‍♂️

It's not truly free until it's open-source hardware that anyone can make themselves.

I guess this is done for patients who don't want to have bad experiences ? Both IV and drinks could be bad experiences.

On the website it said that 3d printer plans for the device will be published in the PPeH "in due course" whatever that means

My version of the PPH says 3D printing plans for the Sarco are or will be published.

Yes, that and to minimize, if not eliminate, the need for a doctor sign-off.

The chassis is one thing, but there's a lot of electronics and other things involved in setting up the liquid nitrogen container and dispersing mechanism. It would be very expensive to make for a one-time use!

I'm glad there is some movement towards allowing people to exit the world with peace and dignity. Especially those nearing the end of their lives that are in terrible physical condition.

I understand that there is restrictions to this method. Of course many people here and all over the world want to have access to something like this at a premature/young age, but I understand why that would be very difficult to accomplish due to the way our world functions and society.

I think we should be grateful that people like Philip Nitschke exist. He's done a lot for people who wish to be free, and to my knowledge spread awareness of SN and N and other relatively peaceful methods thanks to the PPH.

That was always a fear of mine, getting old and having to deal with the degradation of this human body. Not being knowledgeable of exits. Having to try and figure something out. I'm honestly so glad there are people out there who are finding ways to peacefully leave.

It's why this forum is a great comfort of mine. To feel less alone in this world.

There is a Q&A at The Last Resort. May as well ask them directly with further questions about the Sarco and how to qualify? The initial use was postponed. Media frenzy was partly to blame.

Yeah, the inaugural flight got grounded due to deterioration in the mental state of the participant.

Inauguration of the "Sarco" suicide capsule postponed due to test person

The announced inauguration of the Sarco suicide capsule on Swiss soil has been the subject of much discussion in the Swiss and international media.

Keystone
The inauguration of the "Sarco" suicide capsule, originally planned for mid-July in Switzerland, has finally been postponed. The reason for this is the deterioration in the mental state of the person who had been selected for the capsule.

"Given their situation, it is clear that this person should now receive mental health care rather than assisted suicide," explained Australian Philip Nitschke, the developer of the controversial machine, in a statement on Sunday.
