Although, to a degree, I do understand from what kind of space of a mind this belief came from, and why it still is repeated as THE motivational speech to this day, I personally think it's false from a broader perspective.
Suicide is a path. It's not a decision that comes from one miserable night to another. It's a last resort. To many, it's a salvation. It's a procedure that takes days, months, years to conclude.
As much as suicide is not temporary, suffering that leads to it, in my belief, isn't, too.
I do think problems aren't temporary, no matter how much "temporary" and small they seem at times. A problem might pass, resolve on its own. But what comes with it, how much damage to one's heart and mind it takes to make a human seek death, is permanent. You never forget grief of this kind.
Time doesn't heal wounds, it just takes, and takes, and makes one process the present, a possibility, and outcomes until a brain gets exhuasted and numbs itself out. This isn't temporary.
There are also sufferings that last actively for eternity. A terminal illness. A loss of a beloved. A debt one has no way of ever paying full throughout their entire natural lifetime. A hand that had struck one it should've protected instead of inflicting harm. I'm sure some are unfortunately able to put themselves in these scenarios.

I don't believe that suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems, because I believe that problems of this life leave their residue on a person, until they scar over and over, until one wishes for the scar to be removed, and it results in too much tissue to dispose of without a trace.

"Suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems"

And thank God for that!

(also, these problems I'm experiencing are NOT temporary; I still have not been able to find a job in 3 years, or hit the lottery so I don't have to work some dogshit job, or get to live the objectively better and more convenient life of a mentally healthy person who is attractive and naturally gifted, etc)

Technically, a problem that lasts for "only" 57 years is temporary if you live long enough to outlive it, but who the fuck wants a serious, exceedingly detrimental problem for 57 years?

Exactly what I had in mind. It's never truly "temporary", is it? After all, who wishes to live just to survive?

I have my doubts that even suicide itself is a permanent solution. How could we ever prove that it is? If reincarnation is a thing, or if we get sent to an even worse afterlife that we don't want either, then suicide is just another bandaid fix like all the others. What we need is a guaranteed permanent solution to any and all problems, otherwise, problems will just keep coming no matter what.

I'm not saying this to change anyone's mind about suicide if it is their choice, only that it is one of the things holding me back from it. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to have a permanent solution to all problems so I never have to deal with problems ever again. Recently I stumbled upon a philosophy called Anti-Cosmic Voidism, which is to say that destroying the entire universe and whatever put it here is the ONLY permanent solution there actually is. It isn't enough to merely escape from the concentration camp, if the possibility of being put back into it later on is possible, so the solution is to DESTROY the concentration camp and whoever or whatever it is that created it. The universe IS the concentration camp, and whatever put it here is the Hitler God that needs to be destroyed.

Perhaps it seems like I am losing my mind here by saying all this stuff, because I genuinely believe that an evil creator designed the entire reality that we find ourselves in - a reality where living things are FORCED to steal energy from other living things if they want to survive, inflicting torture on them in the process as a direct result. It's just another reason why suicide appeals to me as much as it does. If I cease to exist, what harm can I cause to other living things? NONE! My problem is, I don't know for certain that suicide will directly result in my permanent nonexistence. People who say that it will can't prove this to me, so how am I supposed to believe them?

Edit: Only thing I wanted to add here is that regarding problems being permanent or temporary, the ONLY way problems can be temporary is if the solution that solves them is permanent. If the problem is something that only lightly affects someone, then finding a solution that solves it is easier, but the worse, bigger, and more painful the problem is, the bigger the solution has to be to permanently solve it. It's just an unfortunate fact that people who say this garbage in your thread title refuse to admit.

Such an interesting perspective, thank you for taking your time to share this on my thread. I suppose that you're right—we cannot easily conclude that suicide is truly permanent if the outcome of the act isn't ever guranteed. Although I do believe that suicide possesses just a tad of some permanency to itself, as it does end a physical existence of one in this world we're aware of, I never really thought about it this deeply. That said, can we even call all of suffering truly temporary, if its apparent solution isn't deemed as permanent in a sense we know of? Wouldn't that make suffering an ever lasting cycle for eternity until a truly permanent solution is discovered? I think that's one of the main reasons why the act of suicide seems so complete to me.

I always felt like it's a stupid statement like if I can solve my problem permanently that's actually good right? I don't understand this statement and always thought it makes no sense. I would rather solve it permanently than get another problem, another problems and stress over again and again.

Technically, terminal cancer is a temporary problem... but only because you get to die at the end of it. Our body itself, chooses death as a solution in order to make a serious problem temporary.

Even if all problems are truly temporary, they will inevitably be replaced by another "temporary" problem, and another one, and another one, creating a permanent state of facing problems with life.

Suicide can be seen as a solution to any one problem, but it also prevents all future problems a person will inevitably face and removes all of the uncertainty that comes with the future. It's cutting the cord to an endless cycle of suffering.

Unless these pro-life people want to seriously try and argue that you can live an eternally problem-free life and know that with 100% certainty, problems are here to stay. Not all of us care as much about constantly fighting against entropy, or we just don't reap the enough benefits from living to make facing those problems worth it.

There are too many impulsive suicides, so that phrase remains relevant. It's just wrongly used too often.

Suicide is a permanent solution, yeah. But you don't go assuming that one's problem is temporarily.

There are temporary sufferings. Break up with your BF/GF is one. Losing your savings is another.

But there are sufferings that are not temporary. Racism/sexism/LGBT is one prime example. Losing your savings can also fit here.

Knowing "suicide is permanent" is good enough.

"Permanent solution to temporary problems."

In some cases, yes. This is true. There are plenty of people who attempt suicide due to a moment of crisis or impulse. Human beings can be extraordinarily emotional; sometimes a small, temporary problem really does feel life-ending. Breaking up with a lover, or getting a divorce, or losing your job that same day. These instances, in the moment, can be consuming. Sometimes people do attempt over these issues in a moment of emotional turmoil, because it can be (for the moment) impossible to see past the immediate grief, loss, or pain.

In other circumstances, however, the 'temporary problems' aren't so temporary. An incurable disease or disability, or chronic pain that will never go away. A mental illness that will be there with you until you die, even after a person has tried medication, therapy, inpatient, even electric shock treatment (a friend of mine has been through all of these to no avail). Racism and discrimination that seem to stick around throughout the generations. Even the lack of access to healthcare, insurance, treatment, housing, and food can be a permanent problem; sometimes people can get out of those situations. Other times, they can't. We have people at our clinic who can't get off the streets despite trying for decades.

Sometimes problems are temporary. Other times they aren't. The "permanent solution for temporary problems" is an important saying, but it's not a blanket one.

In eastern philosophy, post death , one gets rebirth. Death is not a permanent solution to anything. Based on this philosophy nothing is permanent, not the problem, not the solution... nothing. This philosophy describes the laws of life just like laws of physics. When one dies if the death is horrific painful and traumatic the momentum of that trauma remains. The physical body is destroyed..but the subtle body carries this trauma to next life. All unnatural accidental deaths fall in this category. We are here to heal , balance our karma and we become free permanently only if our karma ledger is wiped clean. That state is called Moksha. It's not freedom from earth and reaching heaven, rather it's dissolution of self (soul). The soul is eternal, never dies but it's identity is dissolved and it merges with the ultimate consciousness. The conditions into which one gets birth is determined by karma. It's not accidental nor is it chaotic. Also , in this philosophy suicide is not a sin . But it's a brake in the normal flow ...a kind of disruption. God doesn't become angry or punish but the soul will now need more time to achieve the same end goal that's why it's not a solution to anything. Your state of mind gets carried in subtle body to the next birth. If you have committed suicide cause you are too anxious..that state is what you will land up in your next birth even if you are born into rich family with great family members. It's not like someone is avenging to make you land in same state...it's just the law (no emotions of any diety involved)..just like if you jump gravity does it's job...no special treatment.

Perhaps the temporary problem in question is life itself?
