After @fightingsioux CTBed, I kept quiet because he would hate to attract attention and become the topic of discussions post-mortem. However, sure enough, somebody posted a tribute thread for him yesterday. Despite I quoted @fightingsioux and asked the OP to delete that thread, the OP insisted on leaving it up and questioned my credibility. It took me some time and effort to finally get it deleted by the mods.

Since many of you have read that thread and become aware of @fightingsioux's passing, anticipating discussions about him being sparked soon, I have to jump into action now to nip them in the bud as I promised him I would several days before he CTBed.

I'm posting the screenshot of his request here to avoid distortion of his words and to settle the source credibility issue.

While many of you are saddened by the passing of such a highly respected and beloved veteran member of this community, please remember that his wishes come before your sentiments. As such, although I'm usually not on SS much, I'll start to check the forum frequently to make sure his wishes are honored.

You are a genuine friend. Thank you for posting this, and persuing it with mods.

I find these gratuitous tributes and cult-like worship posts sickening as well. Praying to a dead person...seriously? There's one member who seems to round a few others up on a regular basis for what, I have no clue, other than the need for attention and control.

I'm not sure why mods allow it, let alone put up a big fight when there is clearly proof. There are many dark topics on this site. However, the behaviors mentioned by Figtingsioux are the most disturbing to me.

I liked him,a wise man, in a ignorant/disrespectful time..We werent "buddies" or talked, but I always looked forward to his words of knowledge and respected them above all others.Straight forward,to the point.

All due respect,I say fuck off, if I cant speak of a dead man I respected..I also realize he wanted to be anonymous and worried about the youngsters.I do as well. But at the end of the day I give respect and thanks to him.And the hope that he rests in peace.

This is unbelievable. Posting a private message is worse than a tribute thread. That's about YOU and your need to be believed as the authority of his wishes. If you needed to validate his wishes with anyone send them to mods. By making this public you are creating the drama and attention you claim to want to avoid. I also find his words and declarations about what is or is not quite damaging to a lot of people. He was also quite insulting to other members in that message. I don't know if he said all these things publically so harshly, but now YOU have shown everyone his private thoughts. Everyone has their views about life and whatever may or may not be next. Many need those to hang on or suffer less. Even atheists. Those who tell others they are WRONG about an unknowable thing in such an arrogant way are making it about themselves and there is way too much of that in life and on this site.

I respect anyone's wish when it comes to what they want as long as it doesn't negatively affect others, like infringing on their rights or privacy. One thing I would say is that if an individual doesn't want a tribute or goodbye thread, then respect that, but of course, for the people who want to have a goodbye thread or tribute (or allow someone to post one on their behalf with their explicit permission), then that should be respected as well. In regards to goodbye threads and tributes, I am for them as it is their last moments on this forum (and in their life as well) so they should have the option of being heard and supported and validated in their decision in their last conscious moments in this world. That's the least we can do to make their last moments comfortable and also for us to get some closure.

Read that entire message from @fightingsioux before you launch your attacks, please.

Creating this thread to nip discussions in the bud is better than going after each post about him after being viewed by a bunch of people and inevitably create a scene around each post for weeks to come - prevention is better than cure.

I will not make subsequent posts on this thread to avoid fueling unnecessary discussions, except for bumping it from time to time. The message is already very clear in the original post.

Wishes first. Yet, this unintended mess should not go without lessons learned, cause it had many elements prepared as a recipe for disaster, amongst members who I doubt were ill intentioned in the first place, some of whom are still alive and may suffer from such an episode.

So are you an authority on what is correct and incorrect behaviour ?
The term "cult" is very overused in my opinion.

If a group of people share certain views (that you don't share) and wish to behave in certain ways, then why does that present a problem to you ?

If that group seems to be pressuring people to join, and using highly manipulative and underhanded tactics, such as threats if they tried to leave the group, then that would certainly raise concerns, and then I would understand the "cult" term being used.

However, I don't see that taking place...

I believe I may know one of the individuals you are referring to.
If it's the person I'm thinking of, then that person seems to be very pro-choice to me.
They encourage people to consider their options carefully.
In my view, they also provide an enormous amount of support and love to a number of people.
I believe the "rounding up" you are referring to is when someone "pages" someone on a thread by writing their user name.
It seems that is done to check that the person is okay, and to give them a "shout out".
Why would that cause you concern ?

You wrote : "I find these gratuitous tributes and cult-like worship posts sickening"
Well then you can simply avoid them, can't you ?

I think everyone has their own opinion and that's fine. Some people believe in some things, some don't. It's very easy to have an argument about religion and politics. We should honor each other's opinion and if someone posts a tribute thread or thinks there is another side, I don't see a problem with that. You just have to accept that people think differently even if some things seem very strange to you.

No. I'm just a guy with observations and opinions. Cults exist in many forms, using various methods to attract and keep members. I wasn't aware of the "shout-out" method of posting. Thanks for the info.

The tone and assumptions you've made are pretty harsh. In the future, should you find yourself upset with my perspective, feel free to ignore my posts.

I didn't use harsh language in my post.
I simply replied with various points that were in disagreement with your post.
Your post used terms such as "sickening", "seriously?", and you accused someone of doing things to seek attention.
I'd say your post was considerably more harsh than mine....

feel free to ignore my posts
You mean, like you just didn't, with my post ?

fightingsioux is gone... well shit. he was a nice fella.
Shame he left behind a PM that required an unpleasant sequence of events to unfold.
He could have easily made a post himself, stating his wishes.
People then could have avoided posting, and this thread could have been avoided.
Not too sure why he didn't do that.
@nitrogen Did you consider replying to @fightingsioux 's PM, and suggest he make a post, to make his wishes known ?
That way all of this could have been avoided....

The way this has been handled, namely :

> Wait for someone to post
> Get it taken down, then reveal his wishes

seems poor, and a bit unfair to those just innocently wanting to acknowledge somebody they respected.
