"There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.

The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence.

Finally, the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.

The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. I'm sorry, but the fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won't matter how many times you ask for forgiveness, the wound is still there."

Charis thinks on any information they'd want, before settling on what they want to ask. "My question is... Where did my dad come from?"

"Your kind are descendants of bioweapons created and used by one of the sides during the time period your scholars call the Bloody Century. Every side had a weapon of their own, but one city, using its knowledge of the biological sciences, managed to create beings of great power. While many of them died after the war, and others went mad, many others have managed to spread out into the world." The figure holds the hood of its cloak to keep it on. It's getting windy...
"In the common tongue, they are the Mind Wasters, Body Wasters, and the Soul Wasters. Mind Wasters sacrifice their minds and sanity for power, usually physical, though strange mutations exist. Body Wasters do the opposite, enhancing their minds and magic by sacrificing their body. Soul Wasters are all extinct, as their existence was nothing more than an experiment. Either way, all of these creatures vary in looks. Some look human, others, beastly. There have been a few that look spectral, or even abstract. Judging by your mutations and self-destructive eccentricities, you are most likely a Mind Waster, and have descended from a group that has managed to survive, or thrive, in human populations by blending in. A curious adaptation."
"His exact origins could be any settlement, likely your and his place of birth. My guess is that they're from the North, since the nation that experimented with these beings used to live in what used to be Southern Apricusa..."
...Which no longer exists. Likely obliterated off the face of the earth, or integrated into Port Radiance.

You notice that there's no actual body underneath Mr. Baker's robe, besides a strange, shifting mass that's difficult to see clearly...

"...I was born in Old Apricusa. My father doesn't know where he came from, and his memories are... patchworked, I guess would be a good way of putting it. He can't distinguish which of his memories were hallucinations or reality. At least, not until he was able to get some medicine for it..." They share, but they look concerned. What can they even do about this...?

"I do not think it matters. The Fog is hostile. His kind are not immune to it. You, are not immune to it." The Fog... Charis has heard of it. It's a global phenomenon that changes and alters all that it touches. Its effects are unpredictable, and can range from warping the environment, transmuting both object and living, to even warping space and time. Those exposed to it for longer periods of time, if they survive, either go mad, die, or become dangerous mutants. One case explains how a self-proclaimed doctor wandered through a stretch of forest infested with the Fog, only to end up on the other side with a 3-legged gorilla-man with distorted body proportions.
Another record of a Fog event caused all the coins inside of a merchant vessel to be transmuted into steam, causing thousands of pheli in damage. And yet, apparently, it can bless you as likely as it could curse you. Some Fog effects can also be delayed for days, or even years... One man spent years out at sea, only to explode the moment he returned home, like a balloon overflowing with blood.

That... Hm, that sounds delicious, actually...

Mr. Baker produces a strange lantern from inside of its cloak, the color of its light a sickly, yellowish green. It has already attracted many bugs to it.
"Either way, I am headed West." As soon as it says that, a giant bug crawls out from a nearby building. A cockroach. "There are too many greedy, decadent souls in this world, and I seek to punish them. Do not attempt to save the inhabitants here. When the famine is through with them, all that will be left is gratitude for the food in their stomachs, and modesty." And with that, the cockroach opens its wings, and Mr. Baker flies off.

My Xbox controller started getting stick drift so I cleaned it today. I took out all of the screws and, when I cracked it open, a ton of finger shmoo came out. It took me an hour to clean off all the skin goo. I am so gross! 🤢

I blocked all the people from my toxic self-help group. They tried to gaslight me. A friend of mine encouraged me to do that. I feel better now. Spending time with these people didn't feel safe anymore. I don't let people bully me. I think they are probably pretty fucking pissed I didn't fall for their baites.

Small husbands, tiny males, tall fathers. 🥰

I wonder what it would be like to have a father who centers his entirely personality around being really tall? Not that I would want one, but I'd like to experience one for one day.
