I used to believe that I had already lived this life. When i was about 3 or 5 I used to cry about the future of my life. I used to cry for my future self and all the difficulties I would experience. I distinctly remember having recurring dreams that would predict certain moments in my life and or i would have intense deja vu for most of my childhood and teenage years. I dont think I believe in reincarnation but more of the idea that time is an endless loop that takes you back around. This is all concluded from my own personal experiences so, No.

Hindus & Buddhists see reincarnation as something undesirable, not a second chance. Their goal is to break free from the nasty cycle of rebirth by attaining enlightenment. Not that I give a crap since I don't buy into their worldview.

Exactly. Whether you believe in reincarnation or not, having to go through another round of mortality is supposed to be undesirable. Birth, sickness and disease, old age, death, Buddhists call these the 4-fold miseries and they are inescapable conditions for all levels of rebirth.

According to Buddhist beliefs, while human existence is thought to be higher up on the rebirth ladder- freeing oneself from suffering by escaping rebirth, especially into one of the 'lower realms' perceived as having worse suffering such as an animal existence, is seen as the highest achievement along with also freeing other sentient beings from suffering.

*An interesting little tidbit- Apparently in animal existence the pressure is off when it comes to generating wholesome karma for a higher rebirth, as the being reincarnated as an animal 'works off' it's accumulated unwholesome karma simply by being forced to exist with the limitations of being an animal.

When I was 20 years old, I already wanted to go to nursing home. Still better than deal with people in this sick society until I am good for nothing 80 years old.

THIS! I have been thinking a lot lately about what comes after since I was reading through a post on the afterlife. One video of a NDE suggested that we have to "find" the light. I do NOT want to go on some damn quest after ctb since the point of me dying is that I am exhausted and tired. Other ideas such as the simulation theory, reincarnation, and heaven and hell were brought up. But, as you said, I think these were all created because we as humans cannot even fathom nothingness or losing consciousness when the brain is dead. Even when we sleep, we dream. We have never been in a situation to experience the nothingness and that scares people. I haven't read up on NDE but everyone comes back with a story, so I am thinking that NDE are not the same as dead and the brain is still working and dreaming up things. To me, it is a little arrogant to not even consider the nothingness. People are so self-entitled that it is hard to imagine that we are important and we just die and that's it. The world turns without you. I mean, if scientist say that Earth will not be around forever than what makes humans any better? Our existence and planet are all things that will just go away.

I do not believe that there is such a thing as reincarnation, it is a fictional concept. It is horrifying to think about though, but I do not fear it as I do not believe in it. I believe that after this life, there is nothing, we simply cease to exist. When we lose consciousness that is it for us. Death is true peace. That thought gives me a lot of comfort.

What tells the logic? That we must learn on our past mistakes and grow until we have acquired sufficient XP points to level up to an afterlife or something? Are we are here for that? What have we done to be here to make mistakes to learn from them and level up in the first place? This sounds like some kind of evil game. Like a matrix within the matrix. Inception within inception and so on. Feels like life is the greatest scam that was ever pulled on a human kind.

*An interesting little tidbit- Apparently in animal existence the pressure is off when it comes to generating wholesome karma for a higher rebirth, as the being reincarnated as an animal 'works off' it's accumulated unwholesome karma simply by being forced to exist with the limitations of being an animal.

I hadn't understood before that karma does not apply to animals in the same way it applies to human beings. Thanks for this lucid explanation.

I think Buddhists consider it a privilege to be born human as humans can strive to attain Nirvana.

Exactly. A near death experience is just that. It is not actual death. So can it tell us anything about actually being dead?

A good deed and bad deeds come back to their doers in some shape or form to set the record straight and restore equilibrium. We have an innate tendecy to desire fairness and justice otherwise we would never be able to feel anything as reaction to we being wronged, assaulted or abused. Duality is a mechanism of this world to give a range (spectrums) in which things can reveal & deffernitiate themselves (individuation). Duality is more clear to discern in the deepest levels of how things operate in reality (e.g DNA ). In quantum physics, sub particles are observed to shift between existence and none existence at a very high speed to give us the illusion of this world.

Each living being is unique and different and there is nothing like it in the sense of its experience in its lifetime. Metaphysical baggage (karma) does not move from one being into another in hopes to break some cycle of rebirth to reach some higher final state being.

One of the few things that makes me smile is watching the little birds, House Sparrows or Song Sparrows, in the morning when I walk my dog. They all live in like their own bird community and just seem happy. Chirping, eating little seeds, and bouncing around through the different branches in the shrubs. I too have from time to time experienced deja vu and some instances, dreams that are quite vivid or stressful and somehow when Im under a stressful situation, it seems quite familiar then later realized it happened in my dreams. So I too believe we are somehow in a loop. An example is that I have a vivid memory of my childhood climbing up the medicine cabinet and eating a whole bottle of these chewable vitamin tablets thinking they were candy and ate other bottles too thinking they were the same. I remember clearly I was lying on the stretcher as its being rolled by doctors and nurses, going cold, and passing out. I have no memory of what happened after that such as waking up in a hospital. I asked my parents about it and said never such a thing happened. I even checked my medical/hospital records and none of it but I clearly remember it happened as I even remember the taste of the vitamins and medicines I ate and how painful my stomach was after that. So if the Loop theory is true and relating it to my experience/memories then I guess I have already looped before.

I am not religious, but I am spiritual. Buddhism most closely depicts what I believe. I do believe in reincarnation, but as motels said it is undesirable and a cycle in which we try to break. I've felt many deja vu experiences in my life and I've seen that became true in my future. As I'm sure many of you have as well. I'm sure it's most likely cognitive bias or a trick or the mind, but we each get to make that choice for ourselves.

As a materialist, I don't buy into it. Though, I hope to the gods it's not a thing. I have a third of a chance that my next life would be better, a third of a chance that it would be worse, and another third of it staying much of the same; I don't like those odds. I'd rather not deal with any of that and just fade into non-existence as that seems more promising.

If one is reincarnated as an animal or a plant or a bacteria how does it accumulate good or bad karma for the next reincarnation since it has no free will/agency? Assuming there is such a thing as free will.
