I tend to lean towards 'yes'. Is there true altruism? Or, do we do kind things for others in part to feel better about ourselves? Also, if you are raised to be polite, to help others- it can feel horribly wrong not to do so. So we may do good things simply not to feel bad anout not doing them!
Members in the past have pointed out incredible acts of heroism- where people have literally sacrificed their own lives to save strangers. That is amazing- definitely.
What is actually going on in those few seconds? Are they knowingly and willingly sacrificing themselves? Or, are they thinking that they won't be able to live with themselves if they don't try to help? So, in a round about way, even making the ultimate sacrifice could be motivated from the need not to have to endure survivor guilt. Most especially if they could have done something to save the person but didn't.
Possibly parents will put their children first but then, their children are an extension of them. They carry their genes. It is naturally speaking, their job that their children survive.
Maybe I'm just cynical though. The worst thing is, I don't think it works too well in this world to prioritise others. I've definitely witnessed very good natured people just get exploited and walked all over.
