Right now after a couple of years things have finally gotten better for me. I got my debt paid off, have a nice car and a couple of close friends. I have a somewhat stable contract but my project is finishing up. Right now my main goal is weight loss and finding more friends. Things in tech have been looking pretty bad for a couple of years now and work in IT and am pursuing my college degree again. All I want is for time to pass by right now so I can have more money and an emergency fund, and I feel like every week is the same.
I constantly think of what happens if tech never recovers and I end up long term unemployed. My family is set to retire in 6 years and they will likely sell the house so living with them might no longer be an option after 6 years. If I ever end up homeless I plan on shooting myself because death is a better outcome than homelessness especially since you can go to jail for being homeless in America via homeless sweeps. I have seen them first hand. I do not want to end up in a concentration camp because Im trans (US prisons have basically become that under Trump). For other career paths even something that only needs 2 years I would need to somehow pay my bills while going to school. And I don't think there's any career paths outside of tech for me. Healthcare jobs are under threat from the Big Ugly Bill (entry level ones at least) and I'm not comfortable sticking a needle in someone and the consequences for mistakes in healthcare are much more dire. For trades I would need to move outside of California since AI Data Centers are being built in low wage low regulation states, and also the AI Data Center build out will end at some point in time. It takes a couple of years to become an electrician and by the time I graduate that field could end up being a bust once the AI Data Center build out is finished. There's also more and more community opposition to data centers (which is a good thing). The only career path I can do well in is tech and nothing more.
The trades are also known for not being welcome to queer people or women
