A 32-year-old IT professional being treated for depression and back pain allegedly committed suicide in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh after wrapping a polythene bag tightly around his face and inhaling nitrogen from his mouth through a pipe, a police official said on Thursday.

As per police, Siddharth Khurana, who ended his life on Tuesday, left behind a 4-page suicide note in English in which he detailed his failures and said he was sick of living a "miserable life"….

Quoting from the suicide note, police sources said the deceased had dwelt at length about surfing the internet to find out ways for an easy death.

After reading about hanging, consuming poison etc, he opted for inhaling nitrogen gas as it kills within 40 seconds, police sources said.

An image of Khurana, clad in shorts and a black t-shirt, lying dead with a polythene bag around his face and a nitrogen cylinder nearby went viral on social media.

78 percent
The air in Earth's atmosphere is made up of approximately 78 percent nitrogen and 21 percent oxygen. Air also has small amounts of other gases, too, such as carbon dioxide, neon, and hydrogen.

the pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process is based on the phenomenon that under high pressure, gases tend to be trapped onto solid surfaces, i.e. to be "adsorbed". The higher the pressure, the more gas is adsorbed. When the pressure is dropped, the gas is released, or desorbed. PSA can be used to separate gases in a mixture because different gases are adsorbed onto a given solid surface more or less strongly. For example, if a gas mixture such as air is passed under pressure through a vessel containing an adsorbent bed of zeolite that attracts nitrogen more strongly than oxygen, a fraction of nitrogen will stay in the bed, and the gas exiting the vessel will be richer in oxygen than the mixture entering. When the bed reaches the limit of its capacity to adsorb nitrogen, it can be regenerated by decreasing the pressure, thus releasing the adsorbed nitrogen. It is then ready for another cycle of producing oxygen-enriched air.

Generally, industrial production of pure liquid nitrogen is achieved by distilling it from liquid air. Air is composed of oxygen (21%), nitrogen (78%), and a small percentage of other gases.

making your own nitrogen at home
Burn a candle in a closed chamber filled with air. When the candle goes out, separate the gas and extract it with water. The CO2 will dissolve in the water, and the remaining gas will be almost pure nitrogen.

Found the picture, looks like a standard homemade exit bag. The article also wrongfully states nitrogen kills within 40 seconds which isn't true, it is however roughly the time for unconsciousness.

News articles often state the wrong information regarding ctb methods, but I think they're overselling it a bit lol. 10-12 min is the regarded amount of time to be considered dead.

Life in India is very stressful, I know Indians in the UK and their families who left India for the UK. The problem with Indian society is there is enormous pressure especially from family to be successful. The poverty in India does make it hard for people to live.

In Indian family households what career and the social class of the person you are dating is an enormous deal. India have the caste system what caste you belong too will define what jobs you get and how much society respects.

The poor man had his reasons but living in India is so stressful. There is so much people take for granted living in the western world

@cowboypants I was thinking of Vizzy until I saw the date, was he in Thailand? I know he wanted to go with SN but ended up doing nitrogen (I think) so at first glance I thought of him.

Companies that sell welding supplies
Yeah I looked it up. Also has medical use. Places that sell medical gasses or steal from hospital like I used to steal the nitrous oxide tanks. Probably not as easy as it was back then. We used to grab em off loading docks when I was a teenager back in 1970s

Well you are not supposed to "suck" the hose but rather have it inside of a bag creating a zero oxygen atmosphere. There is no pain involved in the traditional sense, but some discomfort can be experienced depending on method of consuming the nitrogen.

Ok. In this case , where nitrogen is taken in via mouth , would it be painful ?

The news reported that he inhaled the nitrogen from a pipe, but it's unclear if he inhaled directly from the pipe or if it was a regular exit bag configuration.

Inhaling directly from a hose isn't really recommended since continuous nitrogen flow would make it hard to breathe. The recommended method with an exit bag is instead fill the bag with nitrogen and breathe from the bag. They're other methods to directly inhale nitrogen without a bag, like eebd hood or scuba/scba. The latter does come with a high price tag.

Our Indian friend most likely didn't suffer any physical pain, but he may have experienced some discomfort like heat and to a degree co2 levels building up inside the bag. The whole process would only last around 40-70 seconds if done correctly, so in most cases a manageable kind of discomfort.

Yes unconsciousness happens very quickly. So quickly in fact, that there are videos online of people playing around with inhaling inert gases and passing out immediately. Then waking up and wondering what happened.
There are also multiple documented accidents of workers unknowingly passing out and then falling into containers of outgasing inert sources. So much so, in certain industries they have to wear safety devices in order to avoid this.

Wow, this happened in my city. Suicides are very common here, but this is the first I've seen that isn't full suspension.

Yup, I can vouch for that. I honestly think some of my issues could have been better dealt with had I been born anywhere but here. I know that there are worse places to be born, but still...
@Sylveon Living in India is extremely difficult. Poverty, no freedom to be yourself due to culture, abuse of young women and girls, the caste system etc

Even our own Prime Minister was not good enough for his Indian in laws. Our Prime Minister went to Oxford University and then later Stanford University. He worked in hedge funds. He is the son in law every mother dreams of.

Before Rishi Sunak got into politics he married a wealthy business woman from India and her family is the 4th richest family in India. His in laws thought he wanted their daughter for her money. Sunak came from a normal UK middle class family

A couple of years after he married is wife he became a MP.
