Sure my life would be far worse. 100-200+ years ago and if I'm suicidal now then I certainly would be back then too. Guess I wasn't made for life then

I've always felt out of place in this society, almost like an alien among animals.

Existence is shit. Better now or back then is not really relevant. Existence is the problem itself. No existing means no suffering no desires no wants . Nothing. Being conscious is a terrible thing regardless of era

I was a sensitive kid, of course society beat that out of me because a little boy who liked reading books, being in nature, and enjoying silence who sometimes cried was seen as a threat to the male ego.

My dad told me he always suspected I was gay because as a boy I was effeminate. But then he said he never wanted a fag for a son either. That's when I started shutting down emotionally and going into defense mode. literally fast forward 21 years and I'm in a similar place, if not worse.

How are we in the best era? The cost of living is insane, and people literally can't afford to start families, not that they should mind you. We have an insane ass clown as president, several wars currently raging around the world, and right wing fascism on the rise.

Not that any era was good.

I asked my boss (65 or something) if at any point in life he ever tought ''Maybe I will never be able to start a family''. He responded with a flat no, but that his daughter has expressed this sentiment. This is one of the most utterly hopeless decades he ever saw.

I often think I'd have died very young if it wasn't for modern medicine and maybe I was t supposed to live this long and it's all be falsely life extending but without the living life part

I also think I'm paying some sort of karmic price for my shitty ancestors having owned slaves

Life has always sucked one way or another, it just sucks in a different way now compared to past decades/centuries.

I've always been of the firm belief that life is simply not for everyone.

Don't make this mistake. You and your ancestors are completely different people. I beg you. Please. With all due respect.

If we're in the best human era then I simply wasn't made for life

That's why I would really like a tool for customizing my own personality.

lol if you've met my relatives you'd know the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. They came from sociopathic slave owners and now they're all lying stealing cheating wife beating shitheads cuz they can't more directly exploit other humans to survive. White slave owners had no fucking skills or anything to contribute besides cruelty. That gets passed down.

IMO the Only thing that saved me from being like them was my dad was an absent deadbeat so I was morally influenced differently to some degree. But the trauma inflicted clearly caused medical issues (that's also been studied scientifically and ACES = heart disease and such)

There's also familial karmic theory and some new DNA studies the show how bad behavior gets passed down. The child is the father of the man as they say.

People are kind of a mess in all eras, honestly. And while some things have improved over time, others have stayed the same or gotten worse. It's tricky too because you can really only directly compare during your own lifetime. Sure, we can read about the past and extrapolate... but you know, a rich person in any era lives quite a bit differently than a poor person in any era.

If you grow up in a shitty family and crap life, but manage to survive that and become a well-adjusted adult and somehow make a life for yourself... from your perspective the present is quite a bit better than the past. But lots of others have the exact opposite experience too. Lots of variables defining how we see our lives play out and how we perceive the lives of others.

I think there are inventions and technologies that are certainly better today than generations past... but I think there are things about daily life that seem more daunting now too. It's a crapshoot for comparison really.

I definitely don't like the way things seem to be trending here in the US right now, or the rest of the world for that matter... but is this the worst time ever? I mean, if you lived during the Great Depression or were a slave in the 1800s here in the US... I bet those were worse times for you than you'd have now.

it's easy to wither away when your life feels inherently purposeless. there's always someone doing better than me, even if it's someone i don't know. i just want to be the person that's doing better, if i could just have the chance to not be me. i don't know what makes people happy on a day to day. that's one of the reasons i don't think i'm capable of living a fulfilling life.

i mean, to your point, i don't think life is a race where we must compare ourselves. i know we all have different struggles, but it's likely that what your life is now is better than a lot of other people :) hope that helps put things into perspective.

I'm doing pretty well in my current situation. Not without flaws. But I've learned to live well. My life is probably better than anyone else's. But I just don't need it. Give me all the riches in this world, I don't need them.
No. I thought... And yet, there is something I would like. But these are such fantasies that they are simply unattainable. At all. Absolutely.

Quality of life ≠ enjoyability of life. The only reason this is "the best era" is because of our advanced technology and medicine, though medicine is technically technology. For all you know, you could have been happier in the Paleolithic era banging sticks around and finger painting.

I agree. I can't imagine being born a couple decades early, banned from having my own bank account, seriously discouraged from having my own income, and essentially considered a breathing incubator and free therapist / live in maid.

And yet, I'm still miserable and suicidal. I'm just not made for this world.

I suspect all eras had their issues. I know what you mean though and we so often hear it from older relatives- how we have it easy compared to them. Not sure many would want to be growing up now though- I think that's pretty revealing.

Have you seen the news in the past two-three years? We're in no means in the best human era. Sure a lot more of us survive illness, there's no hunger in developed countries, you won't be made to work in an asbestos poisoned factory or sent to war (maybe) but as far as life quality and richness a medieval serf probably lived a happier life. We're witnessing the death of moral values, the worst and hopefully final stage of capitalism, the planet is dying and we will be without resources like water or food soon, the past two years have seen 60+ wars, not to mention a pandemic, inflation has been rising since 2021 and nobody's paycheck has had a raise since then.

We're also living in the worst possible time to be social, where we're all so incredibly alienated from reality, distant, cynical and depressed.

So yeah maybe you should rethink that, please ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹
