Just curious what the law is? I'm in Michigan. I cannot find anything. Before I commit suicide this weekend I'd like to try giving my doctor one more chance. But not if they take my firearms as I have no other option. So how much can I say and still be safe from having my property confiscated?

What exactly are you hoping to gain from your doctor by telling them this? Do you want them to change your mind? What do you think they can do for you?

You can say you are thinking about it a lot and feeling very tempted and losing hope, but you want to try and work through it if that is the case, usually the doctor won't act rashly unless you are in immediate danger. If you say to your doctor you will do it this weekend its likely they will take action.

I have very serious health issues from a past jaw infection I still have. If more work is done to resolve it I may not commit suicide

Can't you just ask for the treatment and say you are really struggling without it?
This is what I did. I even told them that I "want to stop existing" and lied about not having plans. But this helped them understand the gravity of my pain and take me seriously. Not recommending lying- just saying that you can express whatever you are trying to without using the S word.

How would your doc even know that you have firearms?

One of the first questions a doctor will ask is if you have access to lethal means, especially a firearm.
You don't get asked any of that in the UK. In fact if you told them you were going to kill yourself most of the time you won't be took seriously.

Well firearms are not legal for the most part in your country. United States practically everyone has at least one gun

I went to the psych ward voluntarily and the worker told me that since it was voluntary they couldn't take any weapons. This would be worth doing from the sound of it, and it's probably what your doctor would suggest anyway, if you start talking about this.

I sent my doctor this message through my online message center:

I should've been more honest with you about some thoughts I've been having. Just didn't wanna end up in a hospital or something. But I'm getting to the point where I can't do this anymore and honestly getting pretty scared because I feel like I'm running out time. I've already been to ER before though and just feels like a waste of time.

Is that enough that they can take my property away? I try to be vague enough that I could deny saying I said suicide

I don't think that they can take away your property for disclosing that you are feeling suicidal. They will put you in a hospital. Personally, I never tell anyone that I have a plan and that it is sitting on my coffee table at home for me to stare at all the time. I don't really feel as though they want to help, they just want to make money and cover their own ass. This is from my 40 some odd years in the system. All that being said, if you can manage to find a good therapist, that wants to help and cares, go with it.

Speaking as a good "Merican" Technically speaking only 32% of the US population owns a gun (one 2020 study reports only 22%) and 44% report living in a gun household, which is not practically everyone. We do however have the the distinction of having the statistic of 120 guns per 100 people which means gun owners hord guns and generally because of locale and political demographics gun owners befriend gun owners and non-gunowners befriend non-gunowners. Just have to be truthful in these facts.

Yep. Gun owners tend to have a lot of guns

@Ktenacious007

Some US states have "Red Flag Laws". Do a search to see if Michigan has adopted one and, if so, what it says.

I think a mental health doctor (psychiatrist) can have your guns, knives, any weapons taken if you report you are suicidal. Will they? Maybe. Maybe not.

I'm sorry about what you're going through with your jaw.

Personally, if I did not have a concealed permit and if I was in your shoes I would deny owning one. In my state, I think they would be more worried if you were a threat to others. I think that's when they would investigate the matter further.

I don't know the laws lately but when you buy a gun, I don't believe they are suppose to have a record of who bought one and when. That's the way our laws were suppose to be designed.

I hope your jaw gets better.

If you become involuntarily committed you will no longer be able to legally own a gun. I don't know if they will take what you already have.

So I sent my doctor that message and she called me to let me know she was calling the police to come to my house to do a welfare check as she needs to cover herself. I told her she misunderstood and I was just asking for a therapist recommendation. Took 15 mins to talk her out of calling cops.
