I will try not to make this too long, but there is a lot of history here. I played just about all night long and went 140 turns playing as Scotland (only because they start out as one of the weakest factions in the game, but get stronger over time - which is how I see Sasu working as a RTD community, even if it's only an online version of one), which is a Right to Die society that exists in Medieval Europe when I play the game. I basically lie to the Pope about my Euthanasia Clinics and Doctors being Churches and Priests, while also bribing the Pope and going on crusades to keep him from excommunicating me.
At the beginning, I started with just one territory to the north of England, and several rebel territories around me, which I pretended were individual kingdoms run by Forced-Life assholes. Using my first King, Malcolm, and his son Prince Edward, I basically sacked or occupied all of those surrounding rebel territories until the entire UK and Ireland were controlled by me and England. Then I sent my diplomat around getting trade rights with as many nations as possible, while forming an alliance with England. When I do this, I basically trade a medieval tea that is based on Nembutal and is used by the Euthanasia Doctors to give to their patients, and through trade, the tea is sent to every faction I have good relations with, along with information on how to properly mix the tea and/or drink it. It eventually becomes common knowledge among my citizens on how people who don't want to live can peacefully exit life any time they want, with or without the help of a Euthanasia Doctor (personal choice is pretty cool!). During times of war or economic hardship, the Euthanasia Doctors work in overtime, and when the population stagnates or drops in any cities, it represents people exercising their Right to Die on their own terms.
Eventually I got the diplomat to Rome and that is how I bribed the Pope with gold. I basically paid a small tribute of 600 Florins for 10 turns. After King Malcolm and my first Euthanasia Doctor died, I requested the Pope send a crusade to Egypt so I could send King Edward there to fight the Forced Lifers there. Basically after a lot of sailing around on my ships and losing most of the Crusading army to desertion, King Edward finally made it to Egypt where he crushed two armies outside of Cairo and finally sacked the city, just to win the Pope's favor before abandoning the city and allowing it to revolt once I got some gold gifted to me by the Papal States.
With that extra money, I was able to recruit many new Euthanasia Doctors in my Scottish cities, as well as construct things like bigger and better clinics for my doctors, walls, ports, and roads to better defend my territory and improve the economy in my Right to Die society. But then England, who had also become a Right to Die society, went to war against France (big surprise there for anyone who knows real life history - England and France were historical enemies in Medieval times), and somehow France got excommunicated by the Pope. Wanting to take advantage of that, I had to send my ships back from Egypt all the way up to Scotland before I could wage a proper war because after Cairo revolted, my economy crashed. Eventually, I was able to get the navy back, but poor King Edward died on the voyage.
At this point, I forgot who the name of my next king was because I had many new family members in my territories. With the navy back, I was able to send my new king and some family members down to mainland Europe, where I took one more rebel territory, and shared a border with both France and Denmark. With France still excommunicated and being a Forced Life society, I invaded them the first chance I got. Took one city ASAP, and occupied it before giving it a Low tax rate to help with public order. Then, I requested the Pope launch a Crusade against France, where I then sent my new Crusading Army down to a castle called Toulouse in southern France, which I took surprisingly easily, winning the Crusade, before sending a new army from the north to seize Paris from them. Once I took Paris, my Scottish Right to Die Society was rich and powerful. Lots of gold, strong army, and many Euthanasia Doctors with their own clinics to work in. At some point, I decided to be nice and got a new diplomat. I returned Paris to France in exchange for a ceasefire which they had begged for multiple times beforehand.
Once I gave Paris back, my economy crashed again... This kinda sucked, but at that point I had The Holy Roman Empire to my east, who was also excommunicated and were Forced Lifers, so I requested the Pope launch a crusade against them too. I was almost to their capital city when the Pope out of nowhere decided The HRE was reconciled, so the Crusade was cancelled. Sending my armies back, I ended up dispersing the military units into as many of my cities as possible, while putting good governors in each territory, but then I ended up being attacked repeatedly by both Denmark and The HRE, because they were Forced Life assholes apparently.
Where I left off, I just won two major battles against my new enemies that I thought for sure I was going to lose, but somehow won them by the smallest of margins, but only because England came to save me from Denmark and they brought mortars with them. While my struggling forces defending my city from them fought off the Danish forces, England hit them in the backs repeatedly with the mortars until they all ran away and that is where I left off. I decided I played long enough at Turn 140 and saved the game again.
I do wish I had taken pictures to share with you guys, because this was a lot of fun. I didn't win the campaign victory conditions by any means, just had a blast pretending to be in charge of a Right to Die society that defended that human right from those who would try to oppress it, like France, Denmark, and the HRE for instance. The Pope is also a Forced Lifer too, hence the reason why I had to bribe him so he wouldn't realize my churches were actually clinics for the doctors. Sure, he did send an Inquisitor to kill one of my spies once, who got burned at the stake, but thankfully they were the only one found guilty of heresy. And at some point, I did send my ships to blockade a port belonging to Sicily once because they got excommunicated and the Pope asked me to do it. I got free gold for that too hehe.
Anyway, that is about all I could remember. I've played some fun campaigns in the Total War games in the past, but something about this one was just extra special. The only other campaign that was close to this is when I played as the Julii faction in Rome Total War over a decade ago and had an 80 year old general conquering the Celtic tribes one town at a time, before dying of old age. That was pretty epic too, but in that campaign, I failed to win the Roman civil war, so that put an end to it.
While war in real life can be a very bad thing, in video games it's a bit different. These games can be very addicting. I don't know if anyone will find this thread interesting or not, but I decided to post this anyway.
