"We are the species that knows too much to content ourselves with merely
surviving, reproducing, dying—and nothing else. We want there to be more to it than
that, or to think there is. This is the tragedy: consciousness has forced us into the
paradoxical position of uselessly striving to be something other than what we are—hunks of spoiling flesh on crumbling bones."

"Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love,
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved, as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life."

"Why do I read?
I just can't help myself.
I read to learn and to grow, to laugh
and to be motivated.
I read to understand things I've never
been exposed to.
I read when I'm crabby, when I've just
said monumentally dumb things to the
people I love.
I read for strength to help me when I
feel broken, discouraged, and afraid.
I read when I'm angry at the whole
world.
I read when everything is going right.
I read to find hope.
I read because I'm made up not just of
skin and bones, of sights, feelings,
and a deep need for chocolate, but I'm
also made up of words.
Words describe my thoughts and what's
hidden in my heart.
Words are alive--when I've found a
story that I love, I read it again and
again, like playing a favorite song
over and over.
Reading isn't passive--I enter the
story with the characters, breathe
their air, feel their frustrations,
scream at them to stop when they're
about to do something stupid, cry with
them, laugh with them.
Reading for me, is spending time with a
friend.
A book is a friend.
You can never have too many."

"Here's the thing about Hazel: Almost everyone is obsessed with leaving a mark upon the world. Bequeathing a legacy. Outcasting death. We all want to be remembered.

But Van Houten: The marks humans leave are often scars. You build a hideous minimall or start a coup or try to become a rockstar and you think, 'They'll remember me now', but a) they don't remember you, and b) all you leave behind are more scars. Your coup becomes a dictatorship. Your minimall becomes a lesion.

We are like a bunch of dogs squirting on fire hydrants. We poison the groundwater with our toxic piss, marking everything MINE in a ridiculous attempt to survive our death.

Hazel is different. She walks lightly, old man. She walks lightly upon the earth. Hazel knows the truth: We're as likely to hurt the universe as we are to harm it, and we're not likely to do either.

People will say it's sad that she leaves a lesser scar, that fewer remember her, that she was loved deeply but not widely. But it's not sad, Van Houten. It's triumphant. It's heroic. Isn't that the real heroism? Like the doctors say: First, do no harm. The real heroes anyway aren't the people doing things; the real heroes are the people NOTICING things, paying attention. The guy who invented the smallpox vaccine didn't actually invent anything. He just noticed that people with cowpox didn't get smallpox"

"...this is now, for reasons that are completely unconnected to any of the above, my goodbye thread. The Tagamet has given me a warm glowing feeling, the SN tastes great with a twist of lemon, and these pearly gates are absolutely splendid this time of year. I heartily recommend. Please feed the fish and don't tell anyone my corpse was aquamarine in colour and l chewed my tongue off in the throes of acute agony. Peace to you all."

There are multiple variations of this quote, but I like Frank Herbert's the best:
"If wishes were fishes, we'd all cast our nets."

But I also like my sad version....
"If wishes were Watson, I'd have so many of you..."
(...but none of my wishes came true and now I don't have even one of you....)

Classic stuff, thanks for reminding me of this one. I don't paint but i see that he means perhaps, dedication your soul to something that proves meaningless, that you accomplish but is finished and the life's work with it. nice work.
