Congratulations! I do have a quick question though, are you suffering from physical pain as well? Or is it strictly emotional pain from the OCD?

My euthanasia request was granted a few weeks ago and meow I'm waiting for the appointment with the doctor whom will actually put me to sleep and sdminister the barbituates to stop my heart.

I hope I can endure the next few weeks/months and then fight my survival instinct to leave this world and all my problems far behind.

Regardless, holistically I am still extremely grateful I was given this life. May everyone here find peace either in this world or the next :))
Very happy for you

Do you know what the process will be like? I am schizophrenic and I'm very interested in this option. Wishing you luck and eternal peace!

I don't know whether they allow it for psychotic disorders like Schizophrenia. It took me 3 years and is relatively hard to get I was also always in therapy e.g. 1.5 years residential treatment

One of the conditions is that the disease/disorder has to be 'incurable'. I know for sure that both bipolar and schizophrenia are considered incurable. The first thing they tell you after being diagnosed is that you will have to take meds 'for the rest of your life'. So yes, it should be allowed.

However, another condition is that you have to be 'wilsbekwaam'. This could be a problem if someone's experiencing psychosis, but not if they're 'stable'.

Congrats. Most of my questions have already been answered earlier in this thread. But, what was the process like? I know it's different here in Canada. But I've been getting nowhere with my attempts at getting approved for autism/asperghers. Wondering what the process it like over there. Do you have any idea how long you have to wait? Are they going to give you a time frame for you to choose from as to when it can be done. Or something else?

Hey, I hope its ok if I ask you a few questions. I also have severe OCD and bpd as my main diagnoses. How difficult was it/what requirements were there to be able to have assisted death? I've been in therapy for much of my life + tried 3 different medications for ocd and am still suffering greatly. Do they accept foreign patients and do you know what the process is like for people that don't live in the netherlands/belgium? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you❤️

severe ocd is a really harsh disorder without many good treatment options

thanks for sharing your journey with us and i hope death is peaceful for you

i don't have severe ocd, but i've read enough about it and seen enough about it to know that it can be horrible for the most extreme cases, just really terrible for people who end up suffering a lot

You can get euthanasia only for OCD? I wish I could get euthanasia as a foreigner. I have schizophrenia but my problem is big suffering (for no apparent reason).

Sorry euthanasia for a 25 years old with just OCD, even if severe, doesn't make sense to me at all. Something is missing here or it's just not true

I don't think so, at least not for a while after moving to live there.

But it's amazing. The kindness of putting people down painlessly is something you never appreciate until you need it.

I gotta admit, i am jealous. I got declined from 2 separate facilities. There is one more left to try but the chances are slim because i 'just' have depression and chronic pain in my stomach. Although just depressed people got accepted but my guess is they were old anyways and i'm only 28. I hope your SI doesnt make you chicken out like many do that have this option. This World is made to make you wanna die. Hope it goes well for you and is as comfortable as possible.

This thread is super old everyone, the person who posted hasn't posted since FEB 13 2025, they most likely have managed to get the euthanasia. Please let's respect the dead, there is no one to give information on it anymore, if you wish to make a new thread about the subject, do it but please respect those who have passed. I'm not a moderator but this just seems a little tasteless or maybe nobody noticed that it was an old thread, which is all right, sorry for being a bit aggressive in wording, not everyone might look at the date

It's not like this decision was made in one day. In case of euthanasia because of 'ondraaglijk psychisch lijden' (unbearable mental suffering) you need to have the approval of 2 medical doctors and 1 psychiatrists. And since the trial of Tine Nys, doctors in general have been very careful since.

The OP hasn't been online since February this year, so I'd think he went through with the euthanasia.

Maybe you need to rethink your idea of OCD. One of the requirements in Belgian law is that you need to have an incurable illness (mental and/or physical).
Please tell me, can foreigners get this in Belgium?

No, Belgium will not accept foreigners, no matter how long you live here, in case of euthanasia because of unbearable suffering. In case of physical suffering (terminal cancer for instance), foreigners are welcome. However, in no way is it Belgium's wish to attract 'death tourists'. It's euthanasia, not suicide.

This girl

(it's in Dutch, so you some sort of translator.)

was 25 when she was approved and she got euthanised 2 weeks after her 26th birthday.

In Belgium you are considered to be 'adult' at the age of 18. However, since euthanasia became legal in 2014 only 6 minors were euthanised and I'm pretty sure is was because they suffered from some terminal illness (so unbearable physical suffering).

I have OCD myself, among other mental illnesses.
OP has said in other posts that he also had CPTSD and chronic pain.
We don't know the details, but it definitely seems OCD is not the full picture. His case must have been extreme.

OCD could have very much been the full picture. My OCD got so bad for a time that I couldn't do anything for myself or leave the house.

The doctors/psychs have to sign off on whether there is suffering, and they may well have decided that their OCD indicated as much.

Not sure if I'll ever go this route for many reasons but I am curious since I've heard of this, I hear even in places where you can get this for mental illness, it's still difficult to get approved. What requirements would someone have to meet?

It's still difficult, because you need the approval of 3 doctors, one of them being a psychiatrist. There aren't many psychiatrists in Belgium, so you'll have a hell of a time finding one and then this psychiatrist actually has to approve the euthansia.

And even after approval you can't force a doctor to perform it, because euthansia is not a right; it's a request.

This is an article written after a Belgian actor chose euthansia because of unbearable mental suffering. It says something about the procedure. I ran it through Google Translate:

hi, do you know if very severe scoliosis (40+ degrees) alongside cardiomegaly applies for this? i know scoliosis is fixable but it requires a ton of money (which i don't have) and it causes me a TON of pain and difficulties daily, though i'd assume they charge foreigners for this anyway i'm just curious

Thank you for the information, yes this and everything else I've seen proves not even euthanasia is the "easy way out". All of it is so difficult and time consuming and exhausting, I can't even bother. I'm too tired.
