I'm curious if anyone else has this experience.
I remember the first time i tried weed, i was really excited for the prospect of it shutting down the voice in my head. I though it would lower my inhibition and make me into a new person. And of course I thought it would be fun because everyone around me liked it. And not to mention the social pressures, I felt immature for not having tried it yet. So I try it, and it gave me a sever panic attack. At the time I didnt even know what a panic attack was. It was possibly the worst night of my life.

For a while I was so dissapointed in myself and the world. I already had anhediona, so the idea that not even drugs can make me happy was so brutal. A truly defective person. I've tried a few other soft drugs: alcohol, and nicotine, and while none of them were as bad as weed, neither ever did much for me. I dont mind getting drunk once in a while, but it never reduces my inhibition or changes my emotions at all unless I drink a copious amount, and even then only rarely. A nicotine buzz is alright but it goes away so quickly, and in some time i got bored of it. It also leaves me with a slight weird/uncomfortable feeling, its hard to describe, maybe you know what I'm talking about. I never have cravings for it and I can start/stop at will.

Anyways I'm wondering if anyone else has a similar experience with drugs. It bums me out that I cant get much enjoyment out the same drugs that people are getting addicted to. Maybe its for the better, I guess. I have my own copes after all.

Me too, addiction is largely genetic because some people respond "better" to stimulants than others. People with ADHD are more likely to have a chill reaction to drugs bc their brain and nervous system is out of wack and the stimulants do what they're supposed to, stimulate.

Also, are you of southeast or East Asian descent? I am and I'm allergic to alcohol and can't get drunk from it.

I dont have any asian ancestry, and I dont have issues with alcohol. I do drink on occasion but I always wonder why I bothered. There are some alcoholics in my family, so I doubt its a genetic thing. Its interesting how mental illnesses can interact with drugs. I knew about the adhd/stimulants thing, but I wonder how different mental conditions effect the experience of different drugs.

I'm mostly the same except for a single one, heroin. It's the only drug I could become addicted to. I've done most other things and none have gotten close. I've had phases where I did cocaine daily and got off it without issues, used to smoke "spice" (thats what it was called in my country not sure if the name was international) several times daily for months and when I quit that it was more like a bad hangover for a few days then nothing.

Heroin was completely different for me, I only tried it because my girlfriend was an addict. She had hid it early on and convinced me she wanted to get help for it...couple of months later I was there doing it with her. Instantly as soon as the euphoria is over my mind started trying to think what would I need to do to get the next high.

If I hadn't gotten out then and there I would likely be a heroin addict on the street.

May I ask were you alone or with other people when you tried weed and had the panic attack?

It's not that weed doesn't work on you, it's that you consumed too much while having no tolerance to it. It's still probably a good idea to avoid it because of its risks for people with mental health issues.

As someone with ADHD who has a chill reaction to drugs, and as such, a decent amount of experience, I have a couple of things I can think of.
1. If you have a lot of anxiety or are feeling very stressed, you won't really feel the effect of substances. The anxiety will numb it away. So if you drink while anxious or stressed, most of the positive effects are negated by the anxiety. The same is true for weed and everything else. It tends to be less pronounced for harder substances, as they are harder have have a stronger effect.
2. It could be genetic or related to your biochemistry. Not everyone responds the same way. I have ADHD, so I always loved drinking coffee. I love drinking it, I love the taste of it, I love how it makes me feel. Then, there are people who feel bad from it. Physically bad. They get anxious, they feel their hearth pumping and they feel sick. They don't wan't to touch, smell or see the thing.

I was with other people. I have tried it a few other times, if I am any more than barely high then I start to feel the panic creep in, so I pretty much gave up on it. Maybe one day I will try again.

I definitely did have too much, Im worried that this one bad experience ruined it for me completely

That might be my issue with weed, whenever i smell it, and start to feel the effects, I am reminded of that bad time I had.

Unlikely because my relatives and siblings have no problems with it

I've smoked weed everyday for about 12 years, although I have drastically cut down over the past year or two.

Overall I've had a good experience with it, but after... I don't know... maybe like 5 years of smoking it, I had a panic attack while high, and for about a year after that, every time I smoked, it triggered a panic attack (I continued to smoke everyday during that year despite it triggering panic). Panic attacks while high are way worse than panic attacks when not high in my experience, so I think the fear of experiencing another panic attack can get into your head.

The panic attacks did eventually go away and I am able to enjoy it again, although I do occasionally still panic, but I'm so used to panic attacks at this point that I can tolerate it. But yeah, weed works for some people, and not others, drugs in general don't always help you escape, sometimes they heighten what you're already feeling, which might not be what your after.

I've enjoyed some other drugs, MDMA, although it's not often I find somewhere I can get it. Took acid once, was amazing, took mushrooms a few times, but my experience with mushrooms have always been extremely dark and uncomfortable, it eases off by the end of the trip where I can end up enjoying it, but the first few hours have always been extremely rough for me.

Not that I'm trying to get you addicted to anything or to become a stoner, but I will say that your experience with weed will very much depend on the strain and the way your body processes it. Every strain is different, and while some strains have caused me severe panic attacks like yours, others have calmed me down, while others still have made me energized and productive. So, if you are intent on getting high with something on the safer side, I would say give weed a couple more chances with some different strains before you put it off completely.

Additionally, that isn't a crazy amount of drugs to have tried. I promise there are some out there that will work for you. I like ket and mushrooms. I do really recommend mushrooms as they can help you discover things about yourself that you've hidden in your subconscious, good and bad. I've also heard LSD is good, although I've yet to try that one. In any case, stay safe. You don't need drugs to be happy. Although they are fun when they work well ;)

I get that cannabis isn't addictive, but I thought I still needed it, I don't completely know the answer to that question. I do wonder myself, why I continued smoking. I suppose I kept hoping that I would get the effect from it I previously did. Although at the time, I did still like how I felt when listening to music high, and even now, although I don't get panic attacks too often with it, I still love listening to music high.
