Yes i drive.
I can drive a Standard or an Automatic.
My car is a Standard-
Where i live it's a must...
I need(ed) it for dr appointments.
But for me it would be a must anywhere- i am phobic of buses and cannot get on one without having a massive anxiety attack. So i drive everywhere i need to go (not far these days. The car spends so much time parked that i have to drive it around a bit so that it doesn't sit too much.

Yes I drive. For me it's like an escape. I can get out whenever I want when I'm not comfortable staying at home.

Why is the new generation against driving? Driving is the first step in being autonomous in life. I loved it as a teen
nothing against driving. but it's not like i can own a car so why bother?

You would get a car afterward
realistically talking i won't make money at least for the next 7 years. i am so financially dependent on my parents I can't pay a bus ticket without asking for them to pay it. of course there is also a personal share. and the fact i don't expect to be alive until then.

but to be fair, the majority of "the young generation" i know is interested in getting a license. in fact, several of them already own one. but maybe that's just where I live, idk.

I truly believe piss poor, abusive or negligent driving instruction is part of it, while another part of it is all this electronic technology which facilitates driving while distracted and removes vehicle operators from the driving experience and concentration with focus on the act. I do not want my car telling me what to do or think. I'm fine with playing music or listening to the radio, because I'm in charge of that, but I do not want my vehicle trying to take over and dilute my driving skills, let alone tracing my location with satellites (the antithesis of freedom on the road).

When it comes time to buy another brand new vehicle, I may have to revert to on/off road motorcycles again for that sense of freedom.

New cars do what? My car isn't that old and it's like cars I had long ago.

My personal theory is that this is because the current generation grew up on Spongebob. Spongebob in the show is shown to be hypercompetent at various things such as frycooking, expert illustration, and blowing bubbles yet he consistently fails to get his driver's license (mainly because he always messes up the actual driving test, since he does pass the written test quite often).

The only proof I have of this theory is one of my friends who is the same age as I am (26) and has admitted he is afraid of driving for this very reason. Spongebob I guess, makes it look incredibly difficult somehow.

I was around 10 when spongebob debuted. My generation drives.

I`ve just sold my car that i have had for 9 years and it went to someone In Frankfurt , they sent a flatbed to my house (Yorkshire UK ) from Poland to pick it up 700 miles
I only sold it as i won't need it where i`m going and the money will pay for my funeral .

Funerals are so egotistical. I want a gravestone though. They look cool.

I can't say it's a fully generational difference since I'm a millennial too but I think 10 is already old enough to not be TOO influenced by tv. It starts at a much younger age, plus as time went on Nickelodeon started airing Spongebob consistently throughout peak hours. There were plenty of days where it seemed like it was almost the only thing the channel was showing so it makes some sense that Gen Z would get more out of it.

That you can't make money is problematic indeed.

Living in a rural area, I did what boys and girls in my area usually did, I started small, with bicycles, then trail motorcycles, then on/off road motorcycles, then inexpensive used cars (very often two wheel drive pickup trucks made of Japanese sheet metal but with reliable engines and manual stick shifts which had the added bonus of being extremely practical for transporting goods, sometimes moving up to four wheelers for backwoods excursions and drives through deep winter snow - to this day my brothers and sister in law also love their snowmobiles for winter sports), and once upon a time, used cars with no electronics were really cheap and easy to repair, while again, small pickup trucks like Toyotas, Mazdas and Datsuns and Nissans were extremely practical as well, full of uses.

As teenagers, getting away in a car or on a motorcycle was a rite of passage for boys and girls to get away (and often unfortunately, girls would get pregnant when a van, station wagon or a vinyl bench back seat was involved on some quiet road or parking spot for making out in the dark, classic material for movies and songs).
New cars do what? My car isn't that old and it's like cars I had long ago.

Shit like telling me "turn right," or automatic braking if I'm about to be rear ended by somebody else, or a rear view camera when I have eyes to see with. The only reason my 2004 Ford Focus SE Sedan does not have hand cranked windows is because the basic model didn't come in the clear coat blue color I wanted, and I miss vent windows for washing out stale air quickly after it has been sitting in the sun for a while.

26 and don't have a driver's license,

I have issues...

My rationale was that I don't have permanent residency and I don't do much socialising,
So it doesn't matter too much, just an inconvenience when it comes to grocery shopping and transit.
Buor Uber will do.

maybe oneday when I have residency I'll get one.

else if I must return to where I came from, I'll just take SN and stay here forever lol.

Definitely depends on where you live. In some of the major cities driving is too expensive and often a slower form of transportation. Where I live it's definitely a necessity though.

I am almost 28 and have never learned how to drive, granted no one who has ever offered to teach me has ever followed through with it. My ex fiancee said she would when she got her license but that never happened, and now that I've kicked out my roommate I am alone in the house. I might learn to do so before my baby is born, but I don't really plan on being alive much longer after I give birth, so it kind of seems pointless and a waste of time when I could be saving and planning for my Bun's future when I'm not around.

I drive and it's totally necessary where I live because there is no public transport and everything is too far to walk.

Totally love driving though, if it weren't for the fucking Covid I'd take a long road trip to see friends and smoke legal weed.

I took Drivers Ed in HS, but I already knew how to drive because my dad taught me in our old VW bug, loved that funky little car.

Where I live you HAVE to Drive since public transportation is almost non-existent. I wish I had learned how to drive standard. It looks really fun and I imagine there's a sense oneness with your car. Driving automatic gets really boring and I find myself losing focus once in a while. I might buy a beater and practice driving standard if I recover.

Go for it! You're absolutely right in my experience, and driving automatic brings with it just the criticisms you cited.

Ironically, I learned to motorcycle and obtained my motorcycle license on the few Hondas on the market with automatic foot clutches instead of the usual manual wheel bar hand clutches, since every time I tried shifting gears with a manual motorcycle hand clutch, I tended to pop a wheelie. It looked cool, but I might've gotten killed, LOL.

However, those Honda on/off road bikes got me where I needed to go, no matter what the traffic or road construction going on was. Harley's were strictly road bikes, so nobody bothered with those.

I do drive and while I don't think driving is always necessary it is nice to be in control of where you're going in life. Not having to depend on other people or public transport to go somewhere. Spontaneously take the car and drive to the woods or something.

Driving shortens my work commute from 1h30m to 20 minutes which is nice. I don't think I would be able to stay sane going to work without a car.

It's also great to go on late night drives with music and think about life. Drive 140 miles an hour and seriously consider wrapping myself around a tree.

Owning a car does introduce more stress in one's life though. For some people at least. Worrying about damaging it, other people parking next to it or hitting your car. Bird shit after cleaning. Costs and maintenance.

I think that and the freedom, comfort and maybe even fun it gives you balances out in the end.

Is it a must? No. It would be great to have less cars in the world. Even less people.

Bird shit after cleaning
Slightly off topic here, but I'll risk it...

After uni we had a shared house. One of my housemates went away for a week and in that time another of my housemates bought a box of bird seed and spent every day seeding the roof of housemate1's car. When housemate 1 returned, his car lid was utterly covered. Mean thing to do, I know. Housemate 2 left the empty box on top of the TV and housemate 1 never did figure it out. Not sure why he did it, I'd have been really pissed off if someone did that to my car.
