Does anyone else have spinal disc degeneration/moderate to severe degenerative disc disease and annular tearing as a result of the decaying disk? This is only going to get worse as I age and I really do not want to put up with this bullshit anymore, yet I'm told to just cope and live with it

I'm 23 and have the spine of an 80 year old. The human body is truly one of the most irksome and poorly designed evolutionary phenomena that our awe inspiring, horrific, entropic nightmare of a universe has spawned.

All the copium in the world can't stop the mortal meat suit from detiorating.

Kuri, sorry to hear that you're enduring more pain. Have they looked into possibility of surgery? Then again, it's almost impossible to find a good neuro-spinal surgeon who actually cares.

I feel you, i suffer a disability that gets worse over the years and has no cure and that's what i think, the human body is simply a mediocre design and is in many cases a botch. Hopefully Tesla can improve it in the future

I know two people around your age going through this. You probably need to keep your location confidential so I don't know if I could point you to any help in particular but feel free to message if you want to talk.

Don't have that but my right arm feels like the shoulder scrapes & clicks, the forearm feels like the muscle is burning from too much use & fingers hurt & click as well as wrist clicking & giving off pain, no actual diagnosis though.

Every day pain.

Our bodies are amazing but with so many parts and systems, there is a lot that can go wrong. So far perseverance, good medical care and a bit of luck has kept me going. Not everyone is as fortunate. I hope they can do something for you but spine issues are tricky.

I do. Degenerative discs, spinal stenosis, and later stage ankylosing spondylitis.
I've had it for over 20 years and only now have been properly diagnosed.
The only problem is all of the damage that happened in those 20 years is irreparable. It's a terrible, painful, progressive disease.
Most days I can hardly walk, when I do it's with a cane.
I'll soon be in a wheelchair.
The articles online about it are terrible and misleading. They say it just arthritis.
It not only affects our bones (causing tons of mini fractures everywhere but mostly in the hips and spine), joints and ligaments calcify, it enlarges our hearts, causes uveitis, shortens our lifespan by quite a lot and messes with our brain so we have difficulty thinking, remembering, etc. Then there's the exhaustion.

No shit! So do I. I get around with a walker or a cane these days, but if (when) there's any more damage to the nerves running from my lower spine to my legs, I'll be in a wheelchair. That probably means some form of institutionalization for me.

I actually hadn't heard that A.S. did all the things you describe. My first thought when I read that it can enlarge your heart and kill you was: "Yes!! Finally, something that's fatal instead of shit that will just torture me while I live to be 90." Of course, I actually have a friend who is slowly dying of heart failure, and it's not an enviable state. Thank God I live where I do, and firearms will always be an option. "I'm proud to be an American, because at least I know I can send a bullet crashing through my skull . . ." Or is that not how the song goes? That's how the song should go.

I'm sorry to hear about your suffering.

I was diagnosed w moderate version of DDD at 21. Had to wear a lumbar belt for about 7 years and do painful exercises and yoga. Had electro therapy at the physotherapist's, it worked very well. I dont wear a belt now but get occasional flareups once in a while. I think surgery should work in your case given your age, but yeah for a while there will be more pain.

I really wish your condition improves, good luck!

Christ.. I'm so sorry to hear you've went through all of this hell. Someone should have listened to you during those 20 years before it got so bad, but unfortunately it can be hard to receive a proper diagnosis due to time, money, incompetence of wank doctors, and so many other factors.

I've had pain since I was around 16, so I understand how crushing it feels to be suffering for so many years and have no idea what's causing it. Like most things, aging exacerbates these sorts of issues too and leaves one with a narrow window for improvement or restricted options for treatment- spinal problems are far easier to manage for a growing child, not a mature adult.

Is there anything that helps to manage your pain at all? Laying down most of the time is my go to, but I can't do that forever. I'm shocked to learn that AS causes all these offshoot problems like fatigue, cognitive deficits, etc bc I have all of these problems too. I have CFS and have been gaslit for years about these neurological problems, even though my vision is permanently blurred and I have no focus or concentration, both short and long term memory issues (I can't remember entire years worth of life)

I truly hope that you and the others on this thread will be able to find even a modicum of relief. Knowing that the disease is only going to progress further as time marches on is a horrible fate, it almost feels like we're better off not knowing these things.

Our body is wonderful. The real problem is disease.
When it comes to this topic I'm prolly really biased as I have to study biology and human physiology extensively for my degree, so I get to hear about some of the worst possible things that can befall the human body.

I find the whole competitive, dog eat dog, struggle for survival that characterizes our biotic ecosystem absolutely nightmarish. Even on a micro scale, fungi and bacteria will try to overtake and colonise any habitable environment they can find, killing anything in their wake. The fact that this seamless process is completely autonomous as well, without any sentience or self awareness guiding this microbial conquest, is all the more unsettling to me.

Yet, we need microorganisms to sustain any sort of life. Humans and animals can only survive with the aid of bacteria and fungi, but all it takes is one stray cell occupying the wrong niche to completely destroy the host organism. At one of my jobs, I had to grow human stem cells in a dish culture frequently, and it was extremely common to see these fragile things dying en masse due to a random bacterial infection, since these fuckers are EVERYWHERE.

Knowing how fragile we are is a really unsettling revelation. Especially in the modern day where we can be saved from death, only to be permanently crippled in some way as a result of a disease, accident, or other traumatic event that wrecks havoc on our mortal coil. Just like organisms with no consciousness, we are hardwired to live and survive at all costs.

Higher level cognitive functioning is such a poor design, would much rather be blissfully unaware of aging or how fucked up my body is becoming from disease and wear and tear.

Here's a bit about it.
The private groups I belong to are better at explaining all of the effects of the disease.
They have no reason to soften the reality of the symptoms and prognosis.
I think since there are stages, most sites choose to use the first stage to explain it. I'm not sure why.
It's important to know what you are/could be facing.
It took me awhile to find out there were even different stages.
I couldn't figure out why my symptoms are so much more severe than what the majority of the articles describe.
Catching it early is key.
Unfortunately mine was ignored or misdiagnosed for 20 years.

Goodness Kuri, you already have so much to deal with, and now this?!

My mate's mum has ankylosing spondylitis, I've known her since childhood, but really noticing her stooping over more lately. It's a shit feeling knowing someone is suffering and there's really not much I can offer in the way of help, at least not that she isn't already aware of.

Spinal disc degenration? No I can't say that I have, but I suffered a spinal injury after a nasty bail at the skate park a couple of years ago, and ended up with a fractured lower back, an 8 degree spinal misalignment, and a busted shoulder. My spine looked like a zig-zag on the X-Ray.

I somehow walked away from it, amazingly. Then woke up the next morning with my head stuck looking right, and serious pain, unable to breathe, stand up or walk.

Much help from the chiropractor, certain supplements and yoga-like exercises has allowed me to recover greatly, but I still have pretty bad shoulder problems, which become really noticeable when I'm at boxing class... And it feels like I'm 90 years old in the morning when I wake up. Everything is very stiff and sore, most days I cringe out of bed while holding my back and shuffling my feet to the kitchen, until I can warm up with some green tea and a stretch. Once I wake up properly and have that tea and brekkie, the back feels pretty much normal for the rest of the day, thankfully. I don't know why I still wake up like this, years after the injury.

Anyway, spinal issues are nothing to laugh at, it affects movement in the whole body. So you are totally justified in feeling frustrated. Whatever you can do to help even a little, find out what it is and just keep it up. I wish you didn't have to deal with all of this.
