I just joined the community but I have never felt so understood before. I like the safe space and tolerance that it affords.

I tried ctb in May but it didn't work out. Part of my plan was to create a website where I can write my last thoughts to people I care about. The website would have like a countdown timer and your message would only show after timeout. This affords you the luxury of being able to cancel the messages after you may have sent out the links.

I didn't finish the project and the idea probably needs more work anyway, but after seeing this SS, I'm a bit motivated to pick it up again.

Which is just sad since I plan to ctb this weekend, SI permitting

That's a really wonderful idea. Honestly, I have been so shocked and distraught that goodbye note's aren't always passed on to family and friends. I considered delayed emails but someone also pointed out that these are likely monitored for keywords like suicide. Not that I suppose they could stop you- legally- they would have to disclose spying on people for that. Delayed SMS also seemed a bit risky- my phone says you need to hold down on send to initiate that and I'd be too nervous it would just send it normally.

I love the idea. Still, you can bet some pro-lifers would gun for that too and it would rely on family/friends being advised where to look online. I love the sentiment though. ❤

Think I misunderstood- thought you meant a goodbye website anyone could leave messages on. Sorry. That's lovely too though- a personal one.

That sounds like an interesting project. I wish you freedom from all suffering for when the time is right for you to leave this world.

The work around the whole keyword part...write your letter in MS Word. And send it as an attachment in your email.

Just in your email say to open the file and read. It will explain everything.

There are websites like the postage and apps like safe beyond that let you send people messages and videos after your death. They are encrypted, and you can set the date in the future and cancel it at anytime.

You are not really off the mark there. The idea is for you to be able to set up a personalized website very quickly and with minimal configuration. So, there's a different site for every user, ensuring that the true purpose of the site remains obscure until timeout.

You could post letters, personalized ones for different people, with a passcode so that your message stays confidential. Memories, favorite music and videos have their areas too if you want them.

The problem with this is that it requires you to set up some form of hosting and handle code, although I think I can write scripts to automate much of the process.

The database is the tricky part, since a centralized db is easy to lockdown. And most people don't want to deal with code. But I figured that I could use their Google Drive as a db substitute. All I have to do is save the site's data in a JSON file or something and Bob's your uncle
That sounds like an interesting project. I wish you freedom from all suffering for when the time is right for you to leave this world.
Thank you

Do you think taking this route would be better than delayed Gmail?

I know you aren't talking to me but I've thought about it and I think people are more inclined to check a link sent through them via SMS or IM than their emails.

I'm in Africa and almost nobody uses emails for interpersonal communication. So an email may not be read. Ever. Plus, it'd be really weird to ask everyone for their emails.

Does that website send them something through their text?

Yeah, I suppose if I have access to their app's API, it can send it. But the current plan is that it will create a link for you that you can send to whomever you want. If they click on the link before timeout, it shows them a fake page. User defined or default

This is an innovative idea @StrangeandDeath. I would totally complete this project if I were you. Would be amazing to actually be able to use your work when my time comes.

Hi @StrangeAndDeath. I hope you are doing ok. I know this thread is a bit old but i'm curious if you've continued to work on this project. I'm thinking a lot about using something similar to leave some kind of testimony i guess, but i clearly lack the knowledge to create it from scratch. In any case it's a great idea, thank youn for sharing it.

I always had this idea and something similar where there would be a site where suicidal people would write their POV of their life, experiences and what lead them to CTB. after we die we are never heard, in fact we are always talked about as selfish and "loved ones" get to rewrite our POV and story to something that make them look good. that always annoyed me and wished someone made a project like that.

No, I didn't. Sorry. I never considered the fact that others could actually need it and I abandoned it. But my major reason for not completing the project was I considered it pointless since everything after my death ceases to be my concern.

Sucks that I'm still alive tho. Just can't find peaceful methods and far too sane to attempt the painful ones.

I may restart the project tho. Since it seems there's actually a need for it. Sending you hugs from here.

Thank you for your answer.
Whether people need it or not, if you don't anymore, do what's best for you. Life can already be hard enough and i hope this didn't come out as a way to push you into restarting it. I'm sorry that you're stuck in this situation. I hope things get easier for you.

I've actually made this before but ended up scrapping it because you'd have to lock the data (suicide notes) behind a server. Once you're dead, you won't be able to keep the server running anymore, mainly because of server fees. Optionally, you could have sites that "lock" the data in the site itself instead of the server but it's more obscuring the data to the average person than a true lock.

Hiding the data in the site works for most since non-programmers don't know how to inspect-element or check website sources for javascript, but my programmer friends would've definitely figured it out and I decided against a suicide note. For the optimal solution, you'd either need a non-suicidal person to manage things or a suicidal coder with a lot of money.

Though if just making the notes inaccessible to non-programmers is enough for people, I don't mind helping out with anyone interested

The approach is to keep the data in a json file in their Google drive. The website hosting however could be an issue. Especially since I don't want to host it myself to prevent a crackdown. I think there are some sites that allow you to host free static pages. The website would be primarily powered by JavaScript, so the staticness can be solved using that and the data can be dynamically updated using the data from Google Drive. All I'd have to do is write scripts to simplify the hosting of their site in that case.
