If I leave the car running in the garage and I stay in the garage and I close the door to the garage then will the CO2 still go off? Where I am renting there's a door you close or open to get to the garage. What if I leave that closed and I leave the car running while I'm in the garage will it be a painless death? I hope the CO2 monitor doesn't go off. Is there any way I can prevent that? I'm in USA.

Can't CTB with modern cars thanks to emissions requirements.

Yeah, if it was still that easy to CTB, I think a lot of us here would be long gone by now. That's why it's a good thing this site exists.

It's often described in newspapers as a silent killer. But is it really so? Do people really fall asleep without feeling anything?

I think with some modern day cars that doesn't work :( I was hoping for something painless as I'm already in so much physical pain that's my reason to end

This is what I thought too when I first joined the site. If I ever had to CTB, I was going to use this method. Take some sleeping pills, put on some good music, and lie in the back seat. But for this to work, I'd have to use an old car. Lawmakers in the USA have tightened down on emission standards. Modern cars don't give off enough CO2 to CTB.

How old of a car do you need? In California all cars need to pass emissions test I have electric car. They need to do smog check every other year that is the emissions test right? My landlord has the gas car from 2014 in garage. I can't use my electric car for this but dos a smog check check the emissions?

Cars made after 1975 don't make carbon monoxide (CO not CO2 btw)

I have no idea. I don't know much about cars. I just heard that modern cars don't produce much CO2. Honestly, I don't feel comfortable given specific instructions. I'm afraid I'd feel guilty. I do hope that CTB is an absolute last resort for people. I'm sorry for whatever brought you here. I hope that there is some way for your life to get better.

as has been suggested, and you have acknowledged, it is very difficult to do it with a modern car

to my knowledge, unleaded petrol is where it all changed. that would mean a car of at least 40 years old. at the very least there is one part in the system, that will stop it from being possible, but the engine management systems and "charcoal canisters" (old term from the 70's, not sure if it is still relevant) might still make it impossible without really putting in some major effort

probably not the best choice. there would probably be a lot of coughing as well, but that may be inconsequential compared to what you are already going through

And keep in mind that the "old style" CO (NOT CO2) car exhaust CTB's that people actually "saw" back in the 50's, 60's, and 70's were only seen on TV because they were easy to incorporate into dramatic scenes on television. In addition to the CO emitted by older cars without catalytic converters, there was a plethora of other noxious gases that one had to breath which, most likely, made the entire event most unpleasant. Just saying there are better ways to create CO than the utilization of an internal combustion engine. Charcoal comes to mind. There are even a couple chemicals that can be combined to create CO.

They still make CO it's just that 95-99% of it is converted into CO2 shortly after the car starts thanks to catalytic converters.

Looking for a new method now. I also asked what is the process for Switzerland

Depends on the ppm - parts per million. Look at the picture below and see the expected effetcs:
