Is there any particular antidepressant you recommend with the least side effects? I know we all react to things differently, but certainly there are some that are better than others for most.

There is no "best" since everyone is different. But I tried Trintellix, and it had no side effects at all. Prozac and lithium were relatively side effect free, as well. But none of them completely did the job for me. I'm a very complex case. :(

Prozac made me gain 20 lbs in a few months when I took it. That was when I was 13 years old too and had a better metabolism than my now going on 28 year old self. I remember I woke up daily at 6am and dieted all through summer break to get that weight off!
For me, 20mg of Lexapro has been the best for the past 5 years.

There's no best one. For each person there is a most effective antidepressant with the least side-effects but it could be one of many. I've never had much luck with any. Most recently on Parnate.

Lexapro works great on me but I just don't take it. I just hate taking meds.

Fluoxetine (prozac) and Sertraline (zoloft) no side effects at all for me after the 2-3 initial weeks. I've tried Mirtazapine too but it knocked me down so hard that I threw it away after a week and get back to the "soft" ones.

You ain't lying. There are places using MDMA for PTSD as well, in therapeutic doses - I'd legitimately suggest anyone to try this in a safe environment. The different perspective can be life changing in of itself for some.
Many years ago when I was still naive enough to try to "cure" depression I tried many antidepressants, almost all mentioned above. None of them really worked, some temporary placebo effect at the best. Definitely a treatment-resistant depression in my case and no wonder, as I don't even consider it as an "illness" anymore, it's a part of me and goes well with my worldview.

Zoloft and Lexapro caused delayed ejaculation for me (when it takes much more time and effort to reach orgasm). I was totally not cool with that side effect. Now I take Viibryd which has been on the market since 2011 and there are no sexual dysfunction side effects. I can ejaculate with ease. So happy about that. Otherwise, Zoloft, Lexapro, Paxil, etc were all great mood lifers, as long as I took a mood stabilizer such as Lithium to dampen the "(hypo)manic effects" I had experienced due to what is now considered Bi-Polar type II disorder.
I was diagnosed with this due to reacting "manically" to Paxil which is the first SSRI I took. It was mad awesome though, I felt like I could just talk on and on and on about anything uninhibitedly. So much was exciting and I took more delight in humor. I was charged up. But then I emailed my psychologist and told him off which he noticed was very unusual of me and so I was basically diagnosed just because of that email. I don't totally refute it. I guess he was right.
But that was when I was 17. In my early twenties I took Zoloft and Lexapro alone with no mood stabilizer for brief periods and I still experienced some racing thoughts and immense energy, but I was more able to control myself interactively so I didn't act like a maniac.
Others: Anafranil, an older tricyclic med, gave me awful nausea. It's like I was seconds away from throwing up 24/7, without actually throwing up. Torture.
I tried Mirtazapine as well but noticed no effects.
Along with Viibryd I take 5-HTP and L-Tyrosine because I didn't think the Viibryd was really strong enough. Maybe it isn't as powerful as the powerhouse SSRIs like Paxil, Prozac or Zoloft, but the lack of sexual side effects for me makes it worthwhile.
Natural supplements are always better unless you need that something extra from an Rx. Green Tea Extract and Saffron are some others that help me.

Have you never considered ECT? For treatment-resistant depression? Just curious...
I've been curious about this one! Would love to hear more about your experience on this drug, if you were so inclined. I've never "met" anyone who has taken this.

fluoxetine helped me in the past, although i got these very scary side effects where i would hear my name getting whispered when noone was there, feeling like i was being followed, and feeling like there were worms in my arteries and ears
No, I haven't considered ECT and I was never offered that, I don't know if they still do that here. It also has a very bad reputation because how it was abused in the past. Only lobotomy was worse, but fortunately it's banned now.

Oh my god, I thought I was the only one! They made me take Fluoxetine years ago, and when I would try go to sleep, all I'd hear is voices calling my name over and over again. Not whispers though.
I have tried most of the antidepressants over the years and either got little if any relief( that was short lived), or couldn't tolerate the medication at all because of horrible side effects. I am at wits end because I desperately need some kind of med to at least take some of the edge off of my depression and crippling anxiety.
If only I had the nerve to just try and leave this crazy world.
