I think personally it is a decent amount too do with genetics. Some people just have that reaction too ctb when life gets tough. I know its true in my family mental illness is common and even a few suicides. In fact a few months back my mum suggested the idea of getting in the car and ctb'ng together when she was having a deppressive episode.
Maybe it is genetics or a pre disposistion to it . . .
Just how dense are you? Lead or osmium? It's called hope most have some and a few of us have none so we don't play the game you so cleverly helped rig.
I am done with you. Clearly your lot in life is worse than anyone on this board. Godspeed

Don't worry about me; try to focus on you, and if there is just the slimmest path forward, try it. And maybe there isn't, but look hard.

I'll probably stop debating here in a bit. Maybe if someone on the fence reads all this thread, they might at least stop and ponder it. Maybe it helps them, maybe not.

Clearly my answers will never be found.

thanks

I am done with you.
Why? I just answered your question. The reason so few people kill themselves despite having shit lives. It's because most people have hope (no matter how small) that their life can improve and a small minority don't. Not a difficult concept. You said a lot of silly stuff with your full chest and received push back and now your done. Need I remind you that YOU CAME TO US! You came into our house and laid a big shit right in the living room. Its good your done because it stinks in here.
Clearly your lot in life is worse than anyone on this board
It's not you mean old git. Don't think I don't recognize an insult when I see one. Most have it worse than me and some have it better. The difference is in the ability to cope. This is just you getting into the kitchen and complaining its too hot.
Ew. Gross. You don't mean that. You came here trying to stop our journey not to wish us well on our path to destruction. It's insincere non well meaning people like you that really make living in this country hell. If you really wanted to help suicidal young people you would be volunteering for 988 or alike not posting on here all holier than thou. Perhaps you are confused on meaning of the word "Sanctioned"?

🥹❤Jim, I'm so sorry for the loss you've gone through. It hurt to read your words. I can feel how deep your grief is, along with the self‑blame and guilt from your son leaving without warning.

I'm in my early twenties. I know people our age may have a limited view of the world, but that doesn't mean our thoughts are automatically shallow or unreasonable.

Many of us struggle inside for a very long time. We are well aware how deeply our leaving would wound the people we love, and we carry heavy guilt over that. This is not about wanting to get back at anyone, to punish others, or to intentionally cause pain. For some people, even after long‑term treatment, there is no real improvement — simply staying alive becomes an unbearable burden.

"Don't kill yourself because it will hurt your family" cannot be treated as an absolute rule. Even with a supportive family, some people still cannot go on. For others, family itself is where much of their suffering comes from. What family means to each person is shaped by their own lived experience and trauma history; it is very hard to truly understand across different lives.

It means so much that you wish your son had spoken up sooner, so you could have helped. Still, we have to accept that family support is not a cure‑all.

We are coming from very different emotional places. You are someone who has lost a loved one, looking back at a tragedy that already happened. Many of us have stood for a long time right at the edge of that difficult choice. Both sides can easily have blind spots shaped only by their own experiences. There are no easy answers here. This is a deeply grey, complicated space to talk about. It cannot be reduced to "you are too young to know better" or "you should keep living as long as someone loves you."

I don't see this in black‑and‑white terms. I just hope these different realities can be seen.

Well said. Everyone has their reasons, young or old. It just seems to hurt more to see younger people do this. When you get to my old fool status, you see things different. Do not misread this as no young person has deep issues or no valid reason for wanting to kill themselves. I still just think sometimes they don't have a clear picture.

I also don't think you should keep living because someone loves you. I just wish everyone had someone they could talk to that could potentially help them.

I have already been told maybe my kid did it to hurt me. So have it.

I hope you're not talking about me here. If so, all I meant to say is that if it were me doing it, I would want to hurt my own father, not that your son did it to hurt you. If I mistyped I am sorry for that too.

I see where you're coming from. When we say "you can't see what the future holds", that does not mean your present pain isn't real. No one can know in advance what lies ahead: there might be moments of relief, or only new wounds.
People who survive can look back and say "just hold on", but that is hindsight. It cannot be treated as a sure prediction. Whether to gamble on those unknown possibilities is, in the end, a choice only the person in the boat can make. I understand what keeps hurting you. It is not the choice itself. It is that someone has closed the door on all the stories that never got to happen, and we are left standing on the shore, never getting to see how they would have ended.

I will try to be respectful in my reply to you but it is difficult. Only reason I say it is difficult is because I too am young (33 almost 34) but when I finally do end my life, I want my father to be traumatized and follow in my footsteps. He brought me into this world for purely selfish reasons, knowing that I would suffer and die, but did it anyway. I think he deserves to suffer from the grief after I end my life and he deserves to go through the process of considering, planning, and eventually ending his life. I want him to SUFFER beforehand.

I also think that regardless of age, everyone's desire to die is valid and they should have access to a peaceful way out ANY TIME THEY CHOOSE. To be against this is disgusting as I see suicide prevention as being Forced Life slavery. It is extremely invalidating to tell people who are young that they should keep living, and that only people who are old can leave. I disagree with you VERY STRONGLY. If someone is a legal adult (aged 18+) their desire to die is equally as valid as someone who is double or triple their age, if not more than that.

I am sorry for the pain you are experiencing, but your son's desire to die was totally valid and you are the one who sentenced him to suffer and die in the first place. You need to own up to this fact and accept it, as do all people who become parents. When I die, I will bring my father down with me and I don't care about him at all. I have been wanting to die for 8 years and have been close to ending it many times. When my time finally does come, he will know how I feel about him and his decision to procreate.
OK this is quite a harsh post. You need to understand that most people that have "normal" brain chemistry don't think like this about procreation. They think it is beautiful to bring new life into this world or they just reproduce from biological instinct. There is no malicious intent. You seem VERY angry, so I don't know if your father did something terrible to you and that is why you want him to suffer and die? Surely the only reason can't be because he procreated you? Look, I am not happy that I was born into this world either, both my parents totally sucked, and I made the decision to never procreate, but have some compassion for others that think differently. He clearly loved his son and has no closure. He hasn't even a clue as to why his son did this. I can't imagine how difficult this is for him. I agree anyone has the right to end their life if they choose, but I can't help think if his son had reached out about his struggles, maybe medication and/or therapy could have helped him. I know it saved me when I was young and I at least got to have some enjoyable experiences.

It is a lot harder to raise and protect a child than most people admit. Some people hide behind this as an excuse for their own incompetence or abuse, but I do not think it is the case with you. Of course, I don't know you or your child, but your post to me reads like an honest appeal from an honest father who did his best.

Life can be extremely cruel. The world you and I live under is not built for preserving human life or dignity. The best you can do when raising your child is to protect them as long as possible, to instruct them with values to not add to the suffering, and to prepare and support them through facing it themselves. But it is a Herculean task for one or two people to overturn the onslaught of cruelty, isolation, and dehumanization that most people are forced to go through as they develop.

I'm sure there are many beliefs I have regarding suicide that you would strongly disagree with me on, and viceversa. I wouldn't blame you. You're hurting and have lost your child abruptly, and our experiences ultimately build our beliefs. Even if some of the sentiments you share here run contrary to my stances, I can see you're coming here from a place of honest good will. You don't want people to die needlessly, and it is admirable to want to help others.

Your son might have left abruptly because he did not want to hurt you, or wanted to minimize the pain. We cannot know why your son died. Uncertainty can make wounds fester, which is something I'm intimately aware of because of my own ruminations. I've seen people opt out of suicide notes because they thought it might cause unnecessary pain, and that might be what pushed your child to what he did.

It is the hegemonic opinion that suicide is a symptom of a disease, and inherently 'irrational'. Some suicides can be irrational, certainly, but I fear this mindset can be a thought-terminating cliché that can leave suicides inappropriately unexamined, and in some cases dehumanize the suicidal person as simply temporarily sick. It is because of this that I honestly approach you with an invitation to examine the beliefs and sentiments of this forum, and approach with genuine curiosity, humility and empathy; to understand suicide beyond the framework of mere illness, irrationality, or indiscretion. You'll find many people find themselves in both material and psychological prisons far more complex than some temporary embarrassment, that would require very extensive intervention. Some people find themselves in situations far too grim, and that is when suicide often happens.

Regardless of whether you ever understand why I and so many people hold the stances we hold on suicide, and why we see it as a right and at times a rational action, I hope you find peace, even if some answers are beyond our reach. Sometimes, we can't protect those we love from everything, and blaming oneself leads to nothing but pointless shame.
Brilliantly written ❤️

You are right about me being bitter and hateful. I despise my parents and curse the day I was born. My mother should've died when she was pregnant with me in the first place. Would've been merciful.

As for why I haven't offed myself yet, I have a few reasons. For one, I don't have access to a peaceful way out. Second reason is I have this fear that an evil God exists who designed our world the way it is on purpose. There is no guarantee that killing myself will result in permanent nonexistence. What if I get reincarnated or sent to Hell? Can you prove to me that these possibilities don't exist? I doubt you can.
No one can prove to you what or if anything happens after you die. But to continue living in this bitter and hateful state will just bring even more misery to your life. And if you are not going to end it, maybe start exploring some philosophy or Buddhism to gain a different perspective, or else you will just spiral even deeper into anger and resentment as you get older.

My son committed suicide at the age of 20 in April of 2025. No note, no explanation, no idea this was going on in his head. This was also a close relationship; we did everything together, on almost a daily basis. I think the closeness makes it even worse. I did not know what was going on.

Over the last year and a half I have been close to doing it myself, as I just can't come to terms with the guilt and not knowing. And I still might—50/50.

I do understand there are many, many reasons for doing it, and everyone's situation is different; that is a fact.

But as a father in living hell, I want to bring pause to anyone that is young. You just don't know what life will bring; think long and hard before you call it quits.

The damage done to the few people that do love you is truly unexplainable. Now if you're old like me and gave it a good try, then hey, go ahead.

But if you're reading this and under 25 years old, as a lot of you are, please look for another way. Again, I know every situation is different. But you are not killing yourself; you are taking others with you!

jim
One of my friends recently passed due to suicide, and i understand where your coming from. Idk if you have a partner or family to confide in or talk about it, even just to vent thats been helping me. Also doing things that remind me of her, ive made a bracelet for her and i plan to write a note for her. Take care of yourself, and make sure you are grieving if you need to, stay strong.

But I go back to this is not a common train of thought; most roll on, but some 50,000 in the usa don't each year. But the other 340 million do . . .

I don't know, its complex to say the least
Although I agree with the arguments here on why there's many who have bad lives but still don't kill themselves I do also agree it's an complex issue because I don't think anybody will truly ever know objectively whether life on average for everyone is good or bad until we completely understand how the brain and consciousness works. Until then in my opinion it'll be a mystery in the exact same way the afterlife is, people just seem to want certainty in life one way or the other no matter what in most circumstances.

I am very sorry for your loss. From what I understand from this post is you are empathetic. Even in such a dark phase of life , you wish others ...to have hope for the future and not give up. You also now understand suffering at levels most can't even imagine!. I can't offer anything much ... but I had come across Buddhism and it did help a lot. It speaks about suffering. It speaks about ways to address it. It speaks about the "why" of suffering. It speaks about "awarenes" and "ignorance" driven actions . Eastern philosophy says soul is eternal. No one ever dies. They change bodies like we change clothes. I don't know if that's true but just wanted to put it out here if it can bring you some relief. It also says death is not the root cause of suffering. Attachment is.

i am inmensely sorry bout what ur son lived. it is undeniable it is a tragedy. but if u want 2 give encouragement there are WAY better ways than resorting to guilt trip & alienating part of userbase. a bad execution does deserve blame 4 it.
ur problem is that u want empathy but selectively refuse 2 give it.

since other ppl cant see past some1 suffering ill say it: how can u be this selfish??

first u say life can get better only for others not for ME.
then u imply u dont accept some ppl experience unlike YOURS.
u say life can change but ur circumstances are so special?
u are being divisive & almost looks u try to start a we vs us split: and i am sorry but then i have clear who im with.

and id sympathize with u. if u werent this moralistic. u are not trying to help. u are not a guru like u want 2 believe u are.
u are literally guilt tripping the already guilty conscience many ppl have with their families.
u are saying that cuz mysterious life paths u cant know nor prove ppl should potentially suffer very long! but oh the damage of loss is worse than soooo many trauma. but then u agree it can never improve? if so u concede some ppl under 25 are allowed to choose??
i would never belittle any pain. all is valid. difference sir is u are weaponizing empathy. u are using ur pain to ignore others & use ur position to earn otherwise deserved sympathy.
and since ppl are gullible, they fell. poor be the 1st user who calls this clearly holy man!! u successfully conflated ur pain with moralism & gatekeeping 4 who u think "has it thought through" in a way that dont look divisible so calling u for that risks stirring the masses.

but what is truly unconcievable is this post breaks 2 rules!!! first the post is grey af. but u repeatedly have attacked other members!! how this is even active!

I think I am a bad person for saying this, but I seem to not feel anything for this post at the moment.

It's sad what happened to you and more so to your son who was suffering on this godforsaken planet, but this triggered me because I am still 22 and all I get to hear as a reaction to my unstable nature is that "it will hurt others". No mention on how I feel. I think it's a different kind of isolation compared to that of your son. He said nothing, he didn't give off any unsubtle signs, he just went.

I, on the other hand, scream for help, I try to get attention, hell, I am so pathetic I tried like a couple of half-attempts (pathetic really, but that's what I inherently am!) just to get seen. Nothing, crickets, nada, well technically something... But nothing to do with me or for me, but for others. It's always about others. This just reminds me of it all over again. It's either between passively asking for help (perhaps like your son) or actively asking for help (perhaps like I stupidly did and still do). When both yield the same results or similar ones where one is unheard or unseen it doesn't matter if someone is 16 or 22 or 40 or 78, hell, or even 1!

I am sorry for your loss, but I seem to feel nothing for this post at the moment.

where does the suicide ideation come from? We have millions upon millions that life sucks. Especially if you back out and look at the entire globe vs. your own country.

So as with him, why suicide vs. life sucks. Just seems there must be something people are missing. In the usa, 50,000 people per year commit suicide vs. a population of 340 million. Out of the 340 million, more than 1/2 probably think life sucks

Maybe it is genetics or a pre disposistion to it . . .
The fundamental framework of suicidal ideation is essentially a system failure. Now, what contributes to these failures is a wide variety of genetic and environmental factors. Research is still ongoing, last time I checked.

But, put simply, it's Ashby's Law of Requisite Variety at work. A person's perceived internal possibilities, or internal variety, was less than the amount of disturbances, or external variety, their environment threw at them. Imagine a wild animal whose leg is stuck in a trap. The animal knows its options are limited. Thus, it may chew off its own leg to escape.

All of this is inherently relative and extremely multifaceted, as you and others have already deduced.

Ok, your life sucks ass. But back to, I still ponder why 300 million shitty suck-ass lives in the usa (you did not corner the market on shit lives) and "only" 50,000 kill themselves. I kind of doubt the 50K are the only ones that figured out this game is rigged.

There is something else more to this.

Yes, I am old and shitty myself; I just had the random luck to be born earlier in life when it was easier to live.

And religion might be a fairy tale or not. Guess we all will find out
I am so very sorry about the loss of your son. I am a female born in 1969 and I have no children. But I am also one who thinks life is too cruel to force existence on another. So I have always been an anti-natilist before I knew it had a name. I just wanted to give you my perspective on this question that no one else has seemed to answer yet. Only around 50K die in the US from suicide but there are an estimated 2.3 million adults that attempt, but fail. Then we have millions who would prefer to be dead, but lack the courage to actually do anything about it and just hope every night they die in their sleep, as survival instinct is biologically hardwired in almost all of us and is very hard to overcome. Next we have the ones that force themselves to stay alive for the sake of not hurting other family members. Finally, we also have the very religious that are suffering greatly, but they fear they will go to hell if they kill themselves or they think their suffering is God's will and try to justify it. So I estimate at least half the population would prefer death at any given moment. Now for the rest of the population that never even considers wanting to die no matter what the situation, I think is mostly genetic as everyone has a baseline "happiness" setpoint which influences the way they view the world. Also, others have better resilience and coping skills to handle life adversities. I have struggled with depression and wanting to kill myself since I was 18 years old, and that was back in 1987! I can only imagine how someone with a predisposition like mine would handle coming of age in today's society.
There is so much more pressure and social media adds mega fuel to fire. Life has also become almost unaffordable for young people and some do not think life is worth the struggle with no guarantee of success.
I remember one young person on here killing herself over climate change because she saw no future or hope for the planet. I have no idea why your son did this or why he didnt at least leave a note. Some other young people on here did post some possible theories. I can only tell you the amount of excruciating pain and hopeless one feels to actually be able to go through with ending their lives. I tried once and unfortunately failed. Wherever your son is now, I believe he is at peace. Even if there is nothing after we die, it is still peace. Mental and emotional suffering, I believe is the worst pain on the planet, even exceeding physical suffering. Again, I am so very sorry. I hope if you have a wife or other children, you will stick around for them.

I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my best friend to suicide and her death is probably the biggest reason I want to ctb, it has left an unbearable void in every part of my life. And even still I cannot imagine what it must be like to lose your child to that. I wish you all the best in your grief. I also hope you can find it in you to continue on in his memory / for his sake.

Also, to speak to my own experience/thoughts: I personally can't handle the pressure of everyone's mental health on me. I understand that my death would have an impact on some people. Especially my mother. And yet the placement of that responsibility on me isn't a deterrent for my suicide; it's just a tragic piece of the aftermath. Part of my suicidality is provoked by an overwhelming sense of responsibility, and thus the massive implications of how my suicide would affect the people I care about is only more overwhelming, and in fact a significant contributor to my reasons to ctb. It's ironic, I know, and of course I understand the point. I've long been a proponent of the idea that if you can't live for yourself, then it's okay to live for other people so long as you keep living. It just gets to a point where living for other people is too exhausting. I lost the only person I cared enough for to live for their sake. So now, with no driving reason to live and overwhelming pressure in life, I feel at ease to let myself go.

Here is the problem: first, you're a bitter, hateful fucker. Not sure what your parents did to you that you have this much hate at 33. Possibly they did horrible things; nobody but you knows this. But to make a statement that anyone's desire to die is valid. Not true, when you're young (not 33) you really do not know what you think you do . . .People kill themselves for a multitude of reasons. Some are valid, others not; the not is because they are young and don't understand relationships, jobs, or whatever has happened to them. I also highly doubt the majority of suicides are to punish their parents or family. Some, maybe, but most not.
just respectfully adding almost everyone is mean to me and @Lost in a Dream has been very kind to me

i'm also sorry for your loss Leaving1970
I'm sorry but in my opinion, you're not entitled to someone else's life. You're son was a legal adult.
this seems really inappropriate to post with no warning and i've reported this.

Locking this as it's simply generating too many reports and is a warning honey pot.

Too bad people can't disagree without going to lengths some people have in this thread.
