Maybe it's just us, but we really... Don't care. We've long said that if we could just go into a permanent coma we would. When we were younger some of us even tried to find ways to "accidentally" trigger a coma. We tried many times to make our body have a seizure.

It's not like we'd still be suffering/conscious. That's all we want, and end to suffering, and if that end is death that's great, but if it's a permanent vegetable state... Whatever? Besides that, our family probably wouldn't keep us alive for long. Our mother, in particular, wouldn't want to keep us like that. We know she'd make the right choice and let us go.

Here is the thing: coma isn't always an unconscious state. Some comas have nightmares or some kind of consciousness while they last. Other "vegetables" people lose all mobility yet are fully conscious about it. I don't want to end my life, but death sounds way better than ending like this.

I don't know enough about comas but don't they vary massively?

Locked in syndrome is pretty frightening, any state where your brain is still alive in some capacity surely means there is the potential for some consciousness.

I don't know why you're sure people in such states can't suffer.

The only instance I'm not afraid of becoming a vegetable is if it'll allow me to (enter a permanent coma and) eventually die.

Becoming a vegetable is my greatest fear actually.

I would rather suffer in this world with a functional body than be paralyzed or in a coma.

I've been through a stroke that can cause locked in syndrome in some people. I can't imagine anything worse than being a vegetable

"Locked in syndrome" sounds terrifying. So something like that would be the worst case scenario, as far as I can see. Especially if there's no one sympathetic towards you who could insist on pulling the plug as quickly as possible.

This is actually my biggest fear. Last year, I knew someone that was attacked with a hammer. He was in a coma and doctors said he was effectively brain dead and wouldn't wake up… but he did. He can't speak or move and is confined to a wheelchair and communicates by blinking. It terrifies me just thinking about

Lately I've not been too worried about that. I think if I became a vegetable my family would just pull the plug, or smother me.

Being forced to live in a world where this is even possible is repulsive.

It's definitely not what he wanted. It's what his family decided.

I'm going to draw up a living will/ advanced directive because I have severe asthma and don't want to be the next Terry Shiavo.

BUT having said that, recently I've wanted out of my life so desperately that I've been trying to make peace with becoming a vegetable to escape this life without an obvious CTB that would hurt my 2 closest friends (allowing myself to have an asthma attack severe enough to cause brain damage).

my mother went into coma after she tried to kill herself with insulin. One thing I would suggest if coma is a possibility with your method - have a DNR. That way they won't keep you alive forever.

That's my plan to die without being obvious suicide to protect my parents.. my dad got me new car last week and my mom is changing my bedroom furniture I don't know what's got into them it's like they suspect anything or something, but anyway this won't stop me because no matter what I'm just not happy I don't like life routines and the idea of working everyday to meet needs. How you are going to make it obvious?

I'm okay with a coma/brain death. I'm just scared of having to "experience" the rest of my life just because my family wants me alive, regardless on the amount I'm suffering.

Will it seem weird if a young person (like in their early 20s) asks for a DNR?

DNR is not limited to age group rather it's depending on the chronic illness or injury so anyone can have DNR if they are able to.. most of the time family decide or even the doctor..

I work in a hospital so anyone can request, however the doctor in our state can disagree so approval is not always granted as the doctor have to sign the form.

Per google:
  • A DNR order is allowed for any reason. Any adult can request a DNR, including healthy adults. People most likely to use them are those who know in advance that their chance of surviving CPR is very low and/or they don't want to spend their last days on life support.
