Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

It is safe to say that most people on this forum are under 25. I think it is expected giving the trajectory of where things are headed. It always has been younger adults overrepresented in suicide rates. Sad but not surprisingOhh no so many of you are so young : ( it absolutely breaks my heart reading stories here from people my baby brother's age. I'm so sorry the world is so fucked up. I'm sorry we couldn't fix it for you.
I think it would be more accurate to say that suicide is a leading cause of death for young people, because people in that age group are less likely to die of age-related health issues. Suicide is very prevalent in ageing people. The following graph cites US statistics. The results are not a surprise, is well known that suicidal tendencies are more common amongst younger people and as we move to older demographics, lesser is the tendency to suicidal ideations.
You are right, so much has changed, you doing a great work rain. I really admire you, I'm not kissing (beep) , I feel like you have an amazing aura and something very special about you.I'm 27 years old. I was 23 years old when I joined the forum. I don't miss the time prior to the existence of SS. I really don't... This forum has become a very important part of my life and I don't regret stumbling upon this community for one second. 20'000 members, that's quite a large number in the age of social media like Facebook and Twitter. And so much has changed. If you look at the archived snapshots of the forum from 2018 and the years that followed after, you can see the evolution of this website and the changes that we went through, as a community. I have changed with the forum and this community certainly had an impact on my development for the last ~3.5 years.
I am so surprised at the lack of older members compared to younger ones. I am 70 and my age group feels the effects of aging very strongly. Would have thought more would like this site !!Now that the forum has more than 20,000 members, I wanted to ask some questions and opinions, it seems the family is growing so let's see what our dear members think.
I understand YIKES!!50yrs old in 8-weeks! Yikes!!!
I would be petrified of an "in-real life" anything lol, the only reason I'm as outspoken as I am here is because it's anonymous and the usual things people ignore or diminish me for in "real life" (I still consider this forum real life, realer than most anywhere else) aren't as possible to come after without a face, a name, or a history.Im 24 soon 25.. been on SS since 2018/19 ,i feel that people here understand you more than in real life.. like people who dont really understand vs people who do understand.. wish there was maybe some real life meetup - like say pick a country that is in the middle for everyone that isn't too far ,get tickets and meetup for like a week or 2 or what not.. really would be nice but thatd be fairly slim to ever happen ..
Because I have already been a bit too open on here, I usually avoid giving out other details such as age and location, but it's interesting to see the demographics and the ages of those who feel comfortable saying. Now that the forum has more than 20,000 members, I wanted to ask some questions and opinions, it seems the family is growing so let's see what our dear members think.
For younger people the prospect of having to exist for another 40, 50 60 years is more daunting than for those with fewer years left (some exceptions notwithstanding).I am so surprised at the lack of older members compared to younger ones. I am 70 and my age group feels the effects of aging very strongly. Would have thought more would like this site !!
In 2019, the suicide rates were higher among adults ages 45 to 54 years (19.60 per 100,000) and 55 to 64 years (19.41 per 100,000), with the rate highest among adults ages 85 years or older (20.12 per 100,000), the only age group with a rate increase from 19.07 in 2018 to 20.12 in 2019. Younger groups have had consistently lower suicide rates than middle-aged and older adults. In 2019, adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 24 had a suicide rate of 13.95.
For younger people the prospect of having to exist for another 40, 50 60 years is more daunting than for those with fewer years left (some exceptions notwithstanding).
Older people might also have more experience dealing with certain challenges that might overwhelm those with less experience.
How do you explain the demographics?
Probably a combination of all these things. For younger people the prospect of having to exist for another 40, 50 60 years is more daunting than for those with fewer years left (some exceptions notwithstanding).
Older people might also have more experience dealing with certain challenges that might overwhelm those with less experience.

I can relate.. not sure but im probably better talking online then in real life in a way..I would be petrified of an "in-real life" anything lol, the only reason I'm as outspoken as I am here is because it's anonymous and the usual things people ignore or diminish me for in "real life" (I still consider this forum real life, realer than most anywhere else) aren't as possible to come after without a face, a name, or a history.
(Although some people have tried to pick apart my post history when I disagreed with them, oh well, I won't stop being honest here..it's the only place I come anywhere close to being "me".)
I'll only come if I can wear a full body pillowcase over my head (and no jokester rips it off).
I'm a bit younger than you but same here, I really wanted to feel like I could make it to 30...27 but I turn 28 in less than a month. I always thought I'd at least wait til 30 before deciding to kill myself but I just can't wait that long anymore.
