Discussion Will membership peak due to christmas/new year?

It's like that old wives tale about the suicide rate and the festive season (Christmas/New Year) and before and after.

Since this site only came into being in March of this year, this is the site's first Christmas, and already I'm seeing a few new members in the last few days.

It's now almost the end of the first week of December.

Should we be expecting a 'peak' or am I just buying into the stereotype of the 'darker nature' of the (stressful) holiday season in the month of December?

If this was posted in the wrong section, sorry, please bump or close.

I welcome any thoughts.

Many psychiatric clinics have quite a few emergency patients around this time of the year..... so yeah I do think it has an impact on desperation levels ....

I wish for more from Australia, for bias reasons.

The more the merrier, just as long as the trolls, time wasters, non-genuines and authorities are all kept out. But that's why we have mods/admins, and a darn good server; hooray!

No. Statistics show clearly that suicides are highest in the warmer months and have been so for as long as suicide stats have been collected.

Most people don't commit suicide when they are feeling depressed. Also ad you can see on this forum. Ctb is not something you do in a day. It takes lots of mental preparation.

I think this is due to the holidays being the most depressing time for people who don't have family, lost loved ones, or are single and want to be with someone but don't. These are just the relationship related reasons, but there could be many more reasons as well, not just limited to one or a few.

I have to hope it's true. I believe the stats by posters above about spring and all that for the northern hemisphere being high, but here in summer down in the Southern Hemisphere here, I just have to hope my chances of finding a partner in the mega thread increase if more members increase (particularly from where I'm in/from, Australia).

Haven't been here long enough to know. I used to know someone who worked medical and said spring and summer had more suicides. That's when my suicidal urges used to really peak. This time of year, I'm almost glad to be alive. Well, not this year but in years past I was.

Now I know what's coming. The inevitable lengthening of daylight after about the first of the year. It will be hell. I will want to die badly.

I know I'm dreading it. The whole event is marketed towards families and being with loved ones. I am going to be alone on Xmas now and I know it's only another day but I am really petrified. I cannot wait until the whole thing is over. I know I can do something about it of course but I don't want to without preparing fully which realistically is after Xmas.

I happened upon the site in August doing a late night google search on suicide methods. It's not a secret society by any means lol. I relate this site to the holiday more so as an Island of Misfit Toys...at least some of us.

Members is quite loosely defined here.
Yeah, people and not people, join for a variety of reasons. Apparently, dating is one of them. Whatever works for some, I guess. I can see how people could connect and develop feelings here, but those who actively perceive it as if it were a dating site of sorts, are quite interesting to observe.

Looks like I was wrong, with only days left until Xmas. Darn it.

I guess the science is right, people 'put it off' until after the holidays until January and so on.

Guess I'm now going to be waiting here a while longer for some lucky guy or gal to show up here from my region of the world in 2019. Hopefully it's not long away.
