Hello, everyone, I'm new here. I was skeptical about joining, but ultimately this seems like the only place online where you can talk about these taboo subjects without being censored too much to effectively do so.

I come to the point. My parents are currently on vacation abroad, and I've been thinking this could be the right occasion to commit, without having to hide and without having to force them to find my body. I'm thinking of contacting the local hospital before so that paramedics can recover it. But is this really the least cruel course of action? Wouldn't receiving the news from someone else destroy them? Wouldn't the journey back home be an out-of-body nightmare? Maybe I should wait until they come back in town and just do it while there's nobody home so it's still the paramedics finding me?

What about leaving a letter behind, explaining my motivations? It's the stereotypical thing suicidal people do, but I'm afraid reading it would just heighten my loved ones' pain. And anyway I don't know if I feel like it, it would be somewhat like a search for meaning and self-image that I don't really see as consistent with my current feelings about myself.

So what do you think?

leaving behind a note tends to be better than saying nothing at all. You can leave comforting words, tell them you're sorry for the pain you're inflicting on them, maybe describe why you want to die. It will help give them closure.

I'm a hypocrite though because I'm not leaving much a note behind for my family.

Also, there's the option of going missing and killing yourself in a remote area, but that sounds bad for closure. I'd advise though to not kill yourself in the home as it might make it hard for your parents to remember the spot and cleaning suicides can be $$$$.

Just my few cents.

I hadn't thought of this. Thank you for your answer.

Well, they know already I've been struggling with mental illness for most of my life (and I've talked about suicide before), so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise lol (but yeah, I mentioned "motives" in my post so I see why you wrote that).

That's just my personal opinion. Some deaths are messier than others and you can find ways to mitigate it, like killing yourself in the bathtub with a tarp laid down. Depending on how you time it, you may not leave a mess at all depending on the method, if someone finds you fast enough before you seriously decay.

I also would prefer having someone other than people I care about finding me. I don't want to traumatize them with that image. Leave it for a first responder who doesn't know you and gets paid to do that sort of thing.

I was thinking about using sleep-inducing meds + a plastic bag (for anyone reading, don't try this, I have no idea what I'm talking about).

In that case, maybe have a timed message sent out so your body can be found before your parents go home, but not fast enough to save you.

But then again, I'd feel quite guilty damaging that hotel or B&B's reputation.

Hello. As others have said, scheduling a message to the police may be a good idea. Be cautious that you do not schedule it too early, as being found too early may mean being saved. Also, if you are concerned about damaging a business's reputation, secluded locations in nature, such as the woods, could work. Though you need to be more cautious of how long it would take somebody to find you, and how long it will take (at maximum) for your method to succeed.

to be honest note will help with process it for a tiny bit for sure but some will carry this forever

but the least cruelest way is for you to life to be honest.
it sounds you are loved through. so no good parents want to come home from vacation and find their child dead.

it probally impact their will to go on holidays. is this a bit of guilt tripping? yes

why? because you need to own the consequences and impact you will give to your parents and possible friends and family.

don't walk away from this.

In what situation would that be necessary?
For example if you live alone and you dont want your body to rot there you might want to notify somebody to come but you wont be able to do it before or while your trying to CTB because then the CTB plan might not work

When I think about leaving a note I'm always reminded of that famouse passage of Plato's Phaedrus where Socrates states that a written text is always inferior to speech because it can not answer the doubts of the reader (275d: Δεινὸν γάρ που, ὦ Φαῖδρε, τοῦτʼ ἔχει γραφή, καὶ ὡς ἀληθῶς ὅμοιον ζωγραφίᾳ. Καὶ γὰρ τὰ ἐκείνης ἔκγονα ἕστηκε μὲν ὡς ζῶντα, ἐὰν δʼ ἀνέρῃ τι, σεμνῶς πάνυ σιγᾷ. Ταὐτὸν δὲ καὶ οἱ λόγοι· δόξαις μὲν ἂν ὥς τι φρονοῦντας αὐτοὺς λέγειν, ἐὰν δέ τι ἔρῃ τῶν λεγομένων βουλόμενος μαθεῖν, ἕν τι σημαίνει μόνον ταὐτὸν ἀεί; and in fact what philosopher hasn't dreamt of asking Plato to further explain the theories we read in his dialogues?). People who love me would want to know more, to ask me clarifications on my reasons, to try and convince me with their speech, and the words I've left behind would just taunt them with their stolid deficiency and torment them further. It wouldn't be enough to give them closure. That's why I think a silent, swift exit may actually be less cruel.

They've come back in town by now lol. And now I've thought it would actually be possible, and better, to do it while they're here, but in a situation where they can't catch and stop me (of course), and where it wouldn't be them finding my body after; preferably not at home in order not to taint it for them.

As for the rest (and I'm going to sound extremely entitled now), my affection for my loved ones, in particular my parents, my sister and my grandmother, along with what's left of my morality forcing me to consider the good of the people surrounding me, has always been a strong argument against suicide within my soul, and more recently, maybe, the strongest one. At face value, you could say that the feelings of the people left behind are of no concern to a dead person, since nothing can be of any corcern to them anymore. However, as long as I'm alive, I'm still bound to a moral like everyone else, and this moral prevents me from doing something which would bring so much pain to the people I love, or to any person really.

But a few months ago I grew impatient. I began to think that my parents are (after, arguably, me myself) the main culprits of the way I am now. I'm not guilting them of the fact of generating me because, apart from reproduction being a natural, animal behaviour of man, how can one be charged of something they supposedely commit towards someone who didn't exist yet, like I didn't when they conceived me? By the same logic I can't accuse them of transmitting me defective genes, or of deciding to have a child despite their personal deficiencies as individuals and as a couple. But I think they made several mistakes in raising me. To be clear I think they were decent parents, at face value, and what they did, they did not out of lack of love (for they've always loved me dearly, even eccessively), or of gross negligence, or of sheer stupidity, let alone out of animosity, but out of superficiality, sloth, self-absorption, lack of interest. It may sound stupid, but the first thing which seriously installed this thought in me was me considering my body, which I hate, while confronting it with others', and realizing if my parents had paid more attention to my pediatrician's observations (which I clearly remember to this day) about the unevenness of my legs, now I might not be disgusted by this deformity which disfigures my trunk every time I look in the mirror (sorry for the bit of body unpleasantness here). Forcing me into physical exercise wouldn't have hurt either. At the same time, genes notwithstanding, I don't feel they're completely exempt of criticism in relation to my personality development either. And really, my sister too, for different reasons, has grown up into an unsatisfactory woman (I feel so mean saying this because I love her), which is what confirms me in my judgment. Of course, you could say this things were on me, and I may agree to some extent, but if we want to be serious, an adult parent has got some degree of responsibility towards an infant child. On this note, it's true that a person's actions, according to me, are rarely (if ever) truly imputable to them, since we're all caught in a system of predetermined causality (in this case, it's not like they asked for their flaws), but if we are to enforce a moral of any kind, are we really required to go out of our way, to the point of renouncing our natural and basic right to decide about our own biological life, out of regard to people who, no matter their bond with us, have wronged us greatly? When I firstly conceived this line of thought, I was blinded by rage, and for a week or two I gave my parents the cold shoulder. Sure thing, this faded off in time, but the impression remains to this day.

Related to this impression is also the other impression that imagining my death as a life-ruining event for people around me might be somewhat exagerated. It will surely be a sad occurrence for many, a devasting one for some, but with the superficiality, survival instinct and coping skills that they should have I suspect they might soon move on and mostly forget about me. It's not like their entire lives revolve around me, after all. They've got other stuff and most importantly other people to live for (my parents have their daughter, my grandmother has other three grandchild, my sister has her studies and everything which revolves around them, with a brilliant carreer ahead of her). I also seem to have noticed my parents growing more distant recenlty, maybe because of fatigue with me, or because of me becoming colder myself. Add that, apart from the cost I represent for my family and society at large, if my family and friends truly love me they can't be possibly happy at seeing me struggling and sulking like I've been for so long, and I am now in particular. I am an emotional burden to them, and they will possibly be more serene when they won't have to interact with me anymore. It's like having an old relative struggling with a long and deabilitating chronic disease: you are certainly saddened by their death but can also be somewhat relieved, I've seen this happen before to perfectly good and reasonable people. And just like in those cases, they'll maybe say that I'm finally at peace now, and find consolation and even happiness in that (just to be clear, I don't think there is actually peace after death myself, as I've already written elsewhere on this forum). In fact, the faith some of them possess in Christianity could even lead them to believe I've gone to a better place.

Finally, my sense of moral has further degraded recently (to the point I've asked myself if I've outright become a psychopath lol). Moral is conventional, and I've been maintaining this for years, but I've also long thought that when a moral exists, no matter where it comes from, we're bound to follow it. But really, why is that, if it truly is conventional? Or rather, if morality is based in emotion, as I believe, why are the emotions which bring me to look out for my fellow human beings and my loved ones more valid than the vital, bodily emotions which push me towards death?

But in regard to this, I must recognise that all of this stuff is in part a rationalisation, sincere and well-thought as it might be, of the fact that I just want to do it. I can't imagine surviving like this much longer. My time is simply due. (All of this screed is deeply personal and about me, and should be intended in relation to me only, I'm not offering hypothetical readers reasons to kill themselves or justifications for doing so).
For example if you live alone and you dont want your body to rot there you might want to notify somebody to come but you wont be able to do it before or while your trying to CTB because then the CTB plan might not work
If you don't it before nor during the deed, I seriously doubt you'll be able to do it after lol
But I'm probably misunderstanding something.

@Canto XIII , it pains me that someone as obviously intelligent as you is even in this predicament at all. A few centuries ago you probably would have been a monk whose job was to just read and think, or a philosopher in your own right.

There are so many brilliant, empathetic people on SaSu. What a tragedy for humanity that so many people have been so utterly failed.

You don't have to, I only know about this stuff because I studied it in school. What he's trying to say here is simply that a written text provides informations, but can not satisfy the reader with a deeper understanding of the topic at hand like a living person could. To make a dumb example, if a book tells you that fire moves upwards but doesn't give you the reason why it does so, your doubt cannot be satisfied. Or if you read a philosopher's work but you don't agree with their thesis, you can't just ask the book to explain itself better, nor you can engage with it in a fruitful discussion potentially leading it to change its views, like you could do while speaking with a real, living person (this is part of the general Platonic critique on writing). Here's a translation of the passage I found on the Internet: Writing, Phaedrus, has this strange quality, and is very like painting; for the creatures of painting stand like living beings, but if one asks them a question, they preserve a solemn silence. And so it is with written words; you might think they spoke as if they had intelligence, but if you question them, wishing to know about their sayings, they always say only one and the same thing (translator: Walter Rangeley Maitland Lamb). What I fear is that a suicide note would have this frustrating effect on the people receiving it (another example of a destructively, stolidly silent suicide note is the one queen Phaedra left behind in Euripides's Hippolytus, but in that situation what ended up happening was arguably what she wanted). The Phaedrus is actually a very interesting and pretty simple book, but to a beginner I'd reccomend the Symposium, which is even more beautiful, and less technical.
so do take this a grain of salt. i do reconaise there are extremely shitty parents out there. but from the text i read you basicly telling me that you found out they are humans. humans are imperfect being. it will always be a flaw somewhere. i do reconise part of this. but do realise this. they are as much humans and you are. and we all make freaking terrible mistakes after the one. there is no thing as a perfect thing as parents and being a parents is tough. no parent is a sense a real super human while when i did grew up that was 1 of the angry points aswell. i got over it. you can('t depending really what actually has been happening) blame them
I know, my parents are good people and good parents (especially compared to some of the things I've read on here). But does that mean I can't blame them? I'll agree that if I were really to do that, I should probably blame the overwhelming majority of parents who have ever lived. As one mature they're supposed to get more forgiving of their parents' flaws, but paradoxically it's been the opposite for me, an abnormality resulting from my mental illness I guess. I don't know, I just can't really get over it for now. There's probably another factor at play: I've reached such a point of self-contempt that I've started to despise people similar to me as well, which is exactly I'd feared was going to happen. And who is more similar to you, or rather who's more likely to share traits with you, than your closest relatives?
well this is partly true my question is did they tell you in your face thats what you think? or is it you that feel disappointed that your parents aren't perfect which then also made you loss feelings? in my short perioud on here there a lot of people claim the same. i can't confirm any claims of it. but you can have this feeling comparing it to actually being told in your face what you are saying. the mind can play very weird tricks on people.
I agree, I can't know that for sure. I know that they still love me very much, and that I love them in return. Even when I've felt a sentiment of hate raising in me, love still overweighted it hugely (and after all I also both love and hate myself).
i do believe by nature humans arent designed to pushed to death. its because of events diseases and some other stuff that makes people to want to CTB.
so zooming out. what is really the problem?
I actually don't agree fully with this. People are designed to live and moved by an innate desire of living, and even the suicide's attraction to death can be framed in this desire. I've discussed it longly with another user on here: https://sanctioned-suicide.net/threads/is-suicide-always-rational.250680/page-2#post-3541530. The amount of pain present in life is what brings so many of them (but still a strict minority!) to suicide ideation. But yeah, my relationship with my parents, or with anyone else for that matter, is absolutely not what has put me onto this path. If anything, as I said, it's one of the main reasons preventing me to commit up until now.
Ik I once heard a story of a guy who ctb right outside a police station, idk what method you're going for but it's something to consider
Years ago I read an article on a national news site about a security guard who killed himself outside a local hospital in Como, hoping for organs harvesting (it's still on the Internet). But in order for it to work you need a swift, rapid method not leaving room for external intervention (he used his service gun), and I don't have any.

While my vain heart yearns for compliments (lol), I don't consider myself that intelligent, not anymore. Intelligence is not simply having decent logical skills, or a good memory. It is the ability to use your (largely but not exclusively innate) mental traits to produce a valuable intellectual result in the understanding of reality. In my case, my capabilities are severely impaired by my mental illness, as it's natural. I don't think I've been failed by anyone, my country and my family have given me all the possibilities I could ask for to become an intellectual, as I once dreamt, they even cut me a lot of slack because of my condition, but ultimately I'm just not worthy. Also, would have that really been enough to make me feel satisfied and fulfilled? Is my existential pessimism a product of my personal conditions or an objective reflecion of a flawed reality?

But perhaps I've just always been dumb anyways: when I was in school I was decent at best in hard sciences (and outright awful in some of them, such as chemistry), and only really excelled in humanities and philosophy. At any rate, I suspect the breakneck development AI technologies are experiencing right now will soon make mental skills highly inflationed in both their effective and perceived value.

On a lighter note, the life of the monk has never seemed very appealing to me, I'm too incorrigibly in love with worldy pleasures. And I'd probably have ended up burnt at the stake in no time lmao

Thank you for your kind words.

yes, the paramedics would be the least cruel option. however you'd have to have a really quick method you think is foolproof because otherwise, paramedics are pretty fast, and if they arrive too fast theres a big risk in being saved.

I agree, I can't know that for sure. I know that they still love me very much, and that I love them in return. Even when I've felt a sentiment of hate raising in me, love still overweighted it hugely (and after all I also both love and hate myself).
i understand that you can't get over it through. can i also ask for your age through because im wondering?
i had hate to the parents aswell like a pretty bad. maybe im one the "lucky" ones that part i dont know.
but i only got over it close to my 30s. that doesnt mean it will happen or apply to you through.

If anything, as I said, it's one of the main reasons preventing me to commit up until now.
oooooh that explain a lot to be honest. i thought your parents was part of the reason to do it.

No worries at all, I'm glad you gave me the opportunity to explain myself better.
