i want my thoughts and plans to be documented in that session. i don't want the authorities to blame my parents or my partner, or question them unnecessarily after i ctb.

do u think this is a stupid idea? is there anything I should or shouldn't say? when does confidentiality end, and when can they notify the authorities?

They can notify the authorities if they think you are an imminent threat to yourself or others. Some therapists do this when their clients have ideation. Some confirm that you have definitive plans in place. Some will call authorities on a hunch. It depends on the therapist.

But if you straight up tell them you have the means and motivation to kill yourself, they will most likely lock you up.

Don't say you have concrete plans of hurting yourself or others. That's when they start calling people because they have to.

I'd say start a diary and start putting your suicidal thoughts in there. Don't just do one or two make a bunch entries. Maybe you can record a video and leave it next to your note. Heck you could even get a security camera (like Wyze) and record yourself killing yourself. That way its on an SD card and backup on the company servers. That aught to cover it.

i read a post where ppl said that wasn't enough, since it could be a case of "forced suicide." having records in the healthcare system is enough to ensure my family isn't harassed with interrogations about my relationship with each of them, and things like that.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but mentioning any sort of plan, intent, or actively suicidal thoughts (paired with intent) can be enough to have a therapist call the authorities/send you to involuntary for a few days. It depends on the therapist, but active intent, a clear plan, or clear thoughts on harming yourself and others is immensely risky and will likely result in inpatient.

The user who mentioned a diary is on the right track, I think. Letters, diaries, video proof, etc; that's probably a safer way to get your message across. You can also personalize those a little more to make sure that your loved ones get your message a little clearer, too.

Oh man you learn something new everyday. Well if you die far enough from home to ensure your family have solid alibis that should help. I wouldn't think that it would be easy to force someone to die by nitrogen hypoxia as they would likely fight the process. Even the state of Alabama struggled on 1/25/24 when they used a covid respirator to murder Mr. Smith. So a logical police officer (should one even exist I've not seen one yet) wouldn't immediately assume foul play.

Since we are entertaining hypotheticals I might as well suggest retaining a lawyer. That way you can give him all the evidence of your families innocence to turn into police.

Edit I got nitrogen on the brain sorry. IDK why I mentioned it here my bad. Change it to force a generic suicide and it still works.

No a good idea to involve authorities, and yes that's include therapists. Therapists in the first session will tell you in what cases they are legally to report (murdering, active suicide plan etc). Use therapist as a way to help regulate temporary emotions to make your daily life less miserable, such as sadness, bored, triggering, etc. Do not trust them with any suicide plans.

do u think i should ask he this, just to see where the limits are? or should i write down what i want to say beforehand so I don't go too far?

do u think i should ask he this? literally

On memory, with past therapists, they said at first sessions that they will break confidentiality if I were to admit to a crime, know of a crime or know of a missing person/s whereabouts.

But you can't.

Why would the authorities blame them? And what is it that you think would happen if they did? Write notes saying they aren't to blame. There will be an investigation, of course, but that's just standard procedure and cannot be avoided.

If you live in the United States, I suggest that you look up the Mandated Reporter laws for your state.

Certain professions are Mandated Reporters, which means that they have a legal obligation to report certain things, including an intent to commit suicide.

Having thoughts about suicide is not necessarily the same thing as a plan and an intent. But it's up to the therapist (or other professional) to decide when to report your intention. And if you are seeing a therapist, their case notes may potentially be subpoenaed.

You might end up in a psych hold if you do this. Just, FYI.
