What's the most ridiculous thing you've ever been told by anyone in the mental health profession?

"25 years old is too young to know their gender or sexuality. Unless they are cis and straight, then they know it the second they are born..."

"Someone like you would never be a good adoptive parent or allowed to adopt, why don't you have biological children? That's why you have genitals. Use your genitals to make more children!"

Mental health "professionals" in nutshell:

"Look at that newborn baby boy! I hope he will marry a good woman and give birth to lots of children. You are what, only 25 years old? That's way too young to know your sexuality or gender! And don't say you're antinatalist, you still have time to change your mind. Btw, the laws and adoption centers say that you are allowed to adopt, but let me lie to you that you are not allowed to adopt, and manipulate you to have biological children!"

How are un-related parents able to know a 0 day old baby is cis and straight and will be a good biological parent (note: disgusting to think of a newborn baby as a biological parent or married, yuck), but a 25 year old adult isn't mature enough to know their own sexuality or gender or whether they want to adopt or have biokids or be childless?

PS: what made it even stupider was, that the person who told me to have more kids was an atheist. Yes, an atheist using the "god made you man and woman, and gave you genitals to make children with each other" argument. Saw me as nothing but a breeding machine.

Damn, it'd really suck if you dying could inconvenience them. How the fuck can you call yourself a psychologist and be so clueless as to spew something like that?

my mind is still blogged as to how a psychologist can even let that shit out of their mouth even if they think it... My (former) therapist completely lost it... I don't think a professional in that state of mind should even be practicing.

That sounds about right. Pick a winner and hope for the best... It's beyond strange that there are still med students enrolling in that crap and embarking on a 'career' pretending to know what they're doing. Which ironically probably helps a lot of the simpeltons out there: pure placebo-effect.

I'm hoping these students are people who have suffered and want to help others. I would hope that people who choose psychiatry are doing it because they are convinced THEY can help even if the odds are against them. We need people this positive and empathetic, and perhaps people who have suffered and maybe still are suffering to enter this field and change the pill-lotto treatment method...
