i was in a christian drug/alcohol rcehab in a country town ~6 hours north of my city; didn't wanna go but needed a break from homelessness. on the fridge they had laminated life-affirming signs, including a list of "stress relievers". one item unironically stated: "cut yourself - this can lower your blood pressure!". next to that was a large, profound acronym: PUSH -- subtitle: "Pray Until Something Happens". the latter might've worked on the toilet door.

My ex told me today that suffering is part of the human experience which on it's own is fairly logical and not out of touch, but then he proceeded to say "If you suffer 10 hours but smile and laugh at least once at the end of it doesn't it make that worth it? I think if you can still smile you're not really suffering so badly that you can't continue"

I hate people that act like this. What is the point in suffering for ages for a glimpse of happiness? That's how I'm justifying it when I finally commit suicide. There's a chance I could get better, but what's the point? I don't want to feel like shit for years for a chance I might feel okay for a little while. The suffering will eventually outweigh any sort of happiness

Straight up yes to how stupid and outright egotistical it is for people to say suicide is selfish.

I used to flat out call people selfish when they said that too me. I probably would if I still was talking to people in person about suicide.

Exactly, and I'm already at that point in life, where I'm already deciding that the sort of happiness and joy that I get are rather fleeting and sparse. For the amount of effort, suffering, and also temporary relief, it seems to be a terribly deal (suffer a lot, and maybe, just maybe, you "might" get some relief).

one item unironically stated: "cut yourself - this can lower your blood pressure!". next to that was a large, profound acronym: PUSH -- subtitle: "Pray Until Something Happens". the latter might've worked on the toilet door.
Wow, did they just advocate for self harm in a recovery facility?! Also as far as the PUSH acronym, ugh it's like they are being smug and proselytizing to people who aren't believers... Yeah I'd rather literally push a toilet door than do what that acronym says.

Suffering will always outweigh happiness. Happiness is just chemicals.

"You can get better."
"Commit to getting better."
"Don't throw your life away."

Why can't they understand that I just want to end my suffering and be with Jesus and my grandparents? I haven't gotten better in over 6 months, and that isn't going to change at all in another 6 months or ever. Pro lifers are like vampires that insist you live so they can keep draining you.

Oh, pro lifer has a different connotation here. It's used here more as in people who will stop people from having the choice of ending their life no matter what the cost

It probably seems unbelievable, but I actually haven't encountered any pro-lifers like that. Maybe it's because I don't really have conversations about it? Or maybe I just have really good taste in friends and acquaintances. LOL

I guess one of my neighbors noticed I looked really depressed one day, and she told me she would pray for me and Jesus would make everything better. Maybe that counts?

Other than that, the closest I've been is seeing idiotic memes online. And I can't even begin to pick one out of them.

Actually, I wouldn't generalise in this regard. It's very dependent on character, circumstances and health aspects in my experience. I was generally happy and wholesome until 16. Of course, I had some problems, too, but they really couldn't get to me and overall life was great. Then the mhi came along, and let's just say there's a huge difference between outward and inward problems.

They're just chemicals in your brain. Ever heard of dopamine?
Happiness doesn't last long. Happiness isn't meant for life forms that are built for survival.

You're kidding yourself if you think I was high on dopamine for 16 years, and basically the same could be said about suffering anyway. There's more to it.

I've been depressed, socially inept, cynical and full of self-doubt/self-loathing since I was twelve or so. But I've been told:

"It will get better. You'll look back on it later... and you'll be so happy you didn't got through with it!"

What are you on crack?

I hate even reading about that one. Like they have absolutely no idea what your problems are, so it's pure assumption and kind of insulting.

Short answer to his question: No, it doesn't.P People always makes a excuse to keep on living because they don't know how to die without suffering, they're afraid of death just because they have not experienced it first
You nailed it.

This is also the well known existentialist question ask in Macbeth in the famous "to be or not to be" debate. In a nutshell, Shakespeare writes that the fear of not knowing what is beyond death is what keeps people from carrying out self deliverance.

My oedipal nemesis said to me, after I told him on one of our rare telephone conversations that I'm mourning my youth which was lost to depression: "I don't get it. You have to go out and enjoy yourself. Life is what you make of it."

That was the final nail in the coffin for me.

And yes I actually said I was mourning my youth and bargaining with the universe because I couldn't shake the feeling of this being unfair.

my therapist said this :haha:
Your therapist is on this site who said to @Tony Dark why he is in chat room if he wants to do ctb. :haha:

Yeah, I was just like ...ok... and escaped as fast as possible.

The weirdest part is this person has been suicidal before. She's got deep scars all up her arms. I wonder what Jesus did?

In theory Jesus actually would make it better. You just have to remind them that Jesus lived on another continent and has been dead for over two millennia .

Yeah but comparing anything with psych meds is not setting the bar very high lol

Like, "walking briskly" three times a week for half an hour is as effective as SSRIs.

Okay...

Wait, why do we subsidize a trillion dollar industry from tax payer money again?

This doesn't exactly qualify but when I read the title of this post it immediately reminded me of the last therapist* I saw (I'm no longer in therapy).

Her office had all these cliché, cheesy wooden signs sprinkled all over with words like "breathe" and "Things Get Better", etc. Not even trying to be a hater but it was like come on now....just had such a manufactured, generic feeling to it, not genuine. Plus her voice was dolphin pitch aka super high. Such a blank look on her face. Ugh, and we have the same first name...

Looking back, it would've made for a decent short, subliminal horror movie.

I also wonder sometimes if some people go to college and just randomly pick mental health care as a career and have no "real" interest in it besides the salary (psychiatrists) vs. genuinely entering the field with an open mind, empathy and acknowledgement that mental anguish is fucking agony and living with it every day is a nightmare. Right to die for all.

*Not all therapists are duds, however the truly gifted can be difficult to find and often expensive.

There's an old retired philosophy professor whos also a licenced therapist practicing close to me; I'm debating whether or not I should try to get an appointment.

Why am I telling you this? maybe this happy clappy dumbed down abc 123 singing mnemonic coping skill acronym songs and writing down positive quotes in our paint by numbers mandala diary works for some people. I mean there have always been those people as far back as I remember, back in school and later at work.

Some people are more intellectual or intelligent or even just skeptical, pessimistic, critical. Maybe you need some kind of analyst? That's why I was intrigued when I saw a retired philosophy professor as a practicing counselor.

I think psychiatrists don't earn as much as "real" doctors, at least in Europe; so out of financial interest it's probably better to become a cardiologist or a dentist or something.
