IIRC, and I'm not sure I do, the knot should go beneath an ear. There may have been a preference to the left.

I found this information by googling pictures of dead people, I'm just universally curious but anyway if you look around on Google for people who hanged themselves you'll eventually find yourself in the medicoforensic field and that is where you're gonna find data on this kind of thing.
